Looking for some ideas and pics for trunk carpet or mat. I know it’s ideal to install the carpet before the body goes on but I’m the 3rd owner of my roadster. Looking for some ideas on carpet or perhaps a mat of some kind. Currently has the bare aluminum and anything put back there just slides all over the place. I just want to be able to put a small tool bag, rolled up cockpit cover etc back there and have it stay put.

I used outdoor carpet from Home Depot - Traffic Master Sky Grey, sku 203469232. It comes off a roll 7ft wide and I bought a six foot length.

I cut everything as follows and then trimmed to fit. I used 3M Super 77 spray on adhesive.

- The main trunk area: 4ft x 4ft *(I have the Breeze trunk cubby. Without the cubby, you might want this 4ft wide x 5ft long).
- DS wall: 4ft x 1 ft/*(5ft x 1ft)
- PS wall: 4ft x 1ft /*(5ft x 1ft)
- Back wall: 4ft x 1ft
- Cubby inside wall (other side of back wall): 4ft x 1ft
- Cubby floor: 4ft x1ft
- DS cubby wall: 1ft x1ft
- PS cubby wall: 1ft x 1ft

For a really plush finish you may want to consider using bass boat carpet.

Just make sure you use the right glue and tools and remember to work from the top to the bottom.

FFR sells trunk carpet, which is what I used. Good quality and I had enough leftover to make two sets of floor mats

I used a fabric similar to what most modern cars use. it conforms easily to the contours of the frame an other shapes in the trunk.

I only added carpet to the upper and lower, trunk floor areas. I used Velcro to hold it in place, so i could easily remove it if I ever needed to access the fuel pump and tank gauge sender.

From my build log, post #402:

The past couple of weeks I’ve been carpeting my trunk; yesterday I finally finished.

The lower trunk panels fold back to provide access to the fuel pump and the fuel sending unit. I tried using peel-n-stick velcro to keep the flaps from sliding around, but it didn’t stick at all to the underside of the carpet. If necessary, I’ll use double sided tape to secure the corners in the future.

I used 2 yards of carpet (https://www.yourautotrim.com/s72wiluauca.html) and it was juuusssst enough. This carpet is comparable to that F5 provides with their complete kit; the tufting may be slightly thicker. Initially I was going to use polymat (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NKHOSU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but when I glued a test sample onto some scrap aluminum I got some bleed through of cement. Rather than risk blotches I went with the heavier carpet.

I chose the silver color because I wanted items to be more visible; to me, stuff just gets “lost” in a black trunk. It turns out that silver is very unforgiving when it comes to hiding seams where panels abut each other. Fortunately the only place this happens in my car is on the upper trunk floor; you’re going to have to stick your head inside the trunk to see my C- seams.

I used Weldwood carpet cement (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009X8PEQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1), yet again copying edwardb. A gallon of cement should be enough to do both the trunk and the cockpit.

I used Insta-bind for the raw edge of the carpet above the fuel pump.

PRO TIP: It’s difficult to strike the right balance of too much versus not enough hot glue along the edge of the Insta-bind. Practice on some scrap, making sure the practice bead is long enough that you have to close the carpet-to-binding gap before the glue cools. You’ll see what I mean.

Overall, I’m pretty pleased with how the trunk came out, and the lessons learned should make the cockpit look pretty sharp.

I used carpet from FFR. Easy-peasy.

The FFR carpet came in and is fine but with all of the upgrades done to my car- why not do the same with the carpet? That's my thinking anyway. The FFR carpet I can use as a template (or install at a later date) Is there a template to purchase for the trunk as well? Also can anyone tell me how many yards to order for replacing the interior? I love the look of the leather tranny tunnel. Getting ready to install Koolmat from Breeze.

I love the information on this forum and I really am impressed by the talents of most of the builders I have seen. The lowered trunk mod I've seen, is this something factory five offers or are all these mods hand fabricated. I pick my car up next week and can't wait to get started.

If you're talking about the trunk box that many install over the LH lower part of the fuel tank, no that's not a Factory Five mod. The parts are super easy to fab (I've done a couple) but if that's not your thing Russ Thompson sells the pieces. Not on his website, but send him an email and he'll set you up. http://www.norcal-cobras.com/store/russ_garage/index.html

If its a prefab kit it just makes life easier, but fabricating something is cool too. I like the extra room it gives the trunk.

Did the two sides 5 years ago got involved with other stuff & sort of forgot about it. A week or so back was waiting on some replacement parts & cleaning out some junk. Came across the carpet material I got from Amazon & put it in.

About 3 hours work. Cut the piece slightly oversize left to right & top to bottom. Worked from the top down using 3M90. Cut the holes for the access ports after the glue was dry. Razor knife to trim.
