Question guys. New to me Cobra that used a 93 Fox Body donor. It’s got the speed hut gauges. Either My gauge seems to read artificially high, or my car is running hot. The gauge regularly see 120-140 degrees Celsius. Generally speaking it is 120-130.

Any ideas on where to start?

Today I’m going to let it warm up and take a temp gun and shoot a few areas to see if it is gauge issue or if it really is a heat issue. Seems to me that if it had got that hot, I’d have some obvious issues.

Are there any known “gotchas” with the cooling system that I should look for?

Thanks,

X

140 c would be like 284 F I am pretty sure that would smoke the head gaskets if you were really seeing that kind of temp.

New problem? First start? What did your heat gun show at the thermostat?

What is the starting temp of the gauge? If it's higher than ambient you may want to check the water temp sender. I ran into an issue with "overheating" temps being reported as well.

My manifold has two sensors, one for the Holly sniper and one for the gauge. I got them mixed up and while my temp gauge was not even registering 70f, my sniper was showing it jumping to 220f and still climbing higher if I would have ran it for longer. Swapped sensors and they both are now reading fine. My clue was that the sniper was showing 150f as soon as I started it. Different sensors have different resistance, which was causing my issues.

Ok, went on a long drive. Temperature gauge reads about 25-30 high. I went on a nice long drive, and shot the in/out radiator hose and temps were right where I’d like to see them. I ordered a new sending unit. Hopefully that fixes the problem.

Thanks for your help and ideas.
