Buy a gallon of acetone and a bunch of rags and microfiber cloth’s. A spray bottle for the acetone will help too. Be careful of the fumes, but you’ll use a lot for cleaning stuff. Buy boxes of gloves as well.

Lacquer Thinner is another good way to go, less aggressive than the acetone....

Hey Jim,

Looking over your prime videos and I noticed that It looks like your not using guide coat before you do any sanding?

If I missed it I apologize, but if your not using a guide coat I strongly suggest that you incorporate it into your paint prep process, especially before you start in on the hood.

Hi Jim
Been following along since I am at a similar stage as you are. I have done all the build primer and blocking and am having a local painter handle the seal, base, and clear.
Watching your painter friend, I was surprised not to see you folks using gloves, respirator, and at some points eye protection. These paints are some nasty things.

I like the Blue, should look really cool. I’m also hoping to get mine ‘completed’ over the winter.
Keep up the good work!

SRJ rarely responds to stuff so I'll chime in - it's likely Kootenai Valley customs, Tim Whittaker. He has many parts to help make a build more robust and functional including trunk supports and other items. Some are more appropriate for gen 1, others more universal. https://kootenaivalleycustoms.com/ Web site has been a bit non functional as of late but has contact info

If Tim really is done, he may share the bushing dimensions with the Forum community. IIRC, Delrin rods are available from McMaster-Carr and a machine shop could turn the ID and OD and cut them to the proper length.

And I agree that Tim is a great guy to talk to. He's very knowledgeable about FFR cars and freely dispenses build tips and techniques - especially if you are going to try something experimental. He once gave me a comprehensive hour long dissertation on how to build fiberglass parts, including detailed recommendations on materials, tools and techniques. Another time I got a similar tutorial on how to mount and align the body on the chassis.

Jim, I was watching your assembly video when you were trying to figure out the heater hose configuration. I ordered 2-45 degree Vintage Air hose fittings from Amazon for the firewall engine bay side and used the 90 degree ones on the inside to attach to the heater core. I had to bend the 90 degree ones slightly more to get them to line up better. Tighten them up on the bulkhead fittings and use a rag on it to protect your hand. Tighten them opposite of the installed position and push until it gets to where you want it. You can eyeball the angle with the heater core pipes that way. It takes some effort to do.

I feel you pain with the tops of the side windows. I’ve got the side to seal pretty well but what I find is the 1/8” gap at the top gets larger the faster you drive.
The wind pulls the glass out. Maybe I’ll try that double seal you mentioned.

There is an "L-shapped Channel" I've seen that may work for you guys with a sealing issue. I don't have the top or windows so I'm not sure if this would work or not, but I've seen guys use them on other classic car restoration projects and it worked well there.

Here is what I'm talking about (not saying buy from Amazon, just providing the link as an example --> https://www.amazon.com/52-49Ft-Stripping-Adhesive-Soundproofing-Weatherstrip/dp/B09TCZNJ9Y/ref=sr_1_10?hvadid=528614154214&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9020396&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=11196479524618155106&hvtargid=kwd-1306675197586&hydadcr=19115_9583571&keywords=l+shape+door+seal&qid=1690016256&sr=8-10

My guess is that the wind builds pressure inside the cabin when you drive fast, pushing the windows out. I installed a pressure vent from a Ford pickup to see if I could avoid that problem. I don't know how well it works since I'm not on the road yet, but it seemed worth the $17 investment. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RPXQR93?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details

Where and How did you install it?

I cut a closely sized hole in the aluminum panel that normally provides battery access. The vent just snapped in. I may add a bead of silicone sealer after final assembly.

There is nothing special. Put tape in, added windshield, then glued around it and you are seeing him wipe off the excess.

For your hood prop rod, why not use the FFR ball stud bracket mounted near the striker? that way you don't have store a loose prop rod somewhere else....

Regarding the PPF on the rear fender, it doesn't seem to discolor and make the fender look different so I wouldn't be too concerned about that. If you can manage to get the whole fender done in one piece, go for it. A bit tricky due to the multi curves. But get it covered to somewhere near the top, it's surprising where those damn pebbles get.

Speaking of pebbles, one thing that surprised me is some stones getting in between the hood and the cowl - where you put the rubber stripping. Getting in the habit of opening the hood and checking after every ride...

Hey Jim, I was having the same problem with my doors sagging. I leaned over one to get a tool on the car floor and noticed the main door bar move on the rear bracket. Once I tightened those 2 carriage bolts as tight as I could the doors stopped sagging. Find a friend that can do it for you because of your back. You need to hold the bar at the same time or it will move as you tighten the nuts. I also had to tighten the hinge bolts that go through the bushings twice as they settle in as you use the doors. I put white grease on all those bushings. Nice job on the car by the way! I've been watching since the beginning.

Wow, would have never thought pebbles would be up there... The "raised hood" does not have the same support ribs underneath. It is totally different. And the one that is there is super thin and would get in the way of the striker bracket that really does not fit there either. If I had the ribs of the original hood, I would have put it there to begin with.

We will see what the PPF company says. These fenders have lots of funky curves.

I just bought a right angle pneumatic socket wrench. Hopefully that will do it without sanding. Not sure why it has taken so long to do this, but its been a rough year.....

Or replace the striker bolt (pin) altogether with a ball stud/washer/internally threaded standoff/ threaded rod.

You could then pop the ball end on the end of your prop rod on and off of the striker pin as needed.

You should also pin it, so you won't have to worry about the carriage bolts anymore. Get the door where you want it, then drill two or three 5/16" holes in the bracket a few inches apart from eachg other and then get 5/16" grade 8 hardware (bolt, washers, lock washer, & nut), install it in the holes you drilled and tighten it all up and you'll never have to worry about it again.

About your engine ticking noise. I don't know if your rocker arms are new or the originals when you rebuilt the engine but LS rocker arms are somewhat known to have weak reunions where they pivot on the studs. It's possible that one may have started to fail resulting in excess play on that pushrod. You can buy upgraded aftermarket trunion replacements or one of your lifters may have started to collapse but I would check that all the stud nuts are torqued properly fiestas as you mentioned. They are what they call positive stop studs. There is a shoulder on them that the nuts torque against. You don't need to go through turning the engine to get each valve closed before tightening the nuts except when you first install the valvetrain. Just trying to help and return the favor of all your great videos!

Hello Everyone,

As this chapter comes to a close on the 33 Hot Rod, I will still be posting on my Youtube channel for Car Shows with the 33, Trailer info and hopefully soon the 1966 Ford Econoline van. Feel free to come along for the ride. If there are any videos still pertaining to being on this forum, I will definitely post them. The last year was a little tough, but I am turning a corner for the better. I want to say thanks to everyone for all the support, information and push to keep me going. If I end up doing a F9R, or other FFR car, I will start another thread. Thanks, again. Street Rod Jim

Jim,
Great job, your car turned out awesome! Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos. They show that an “everyday Joe” can do this. Some of the “pros” or guys with a ton of experience make this look easy. You showed some of the real world problems and got through it. Best of luck on the van and I’m looking forward to following your F9 build.
Respectfully,
Jeremie
