View Full Version : Fuel Level Sender not working right

Hi!

I have the hot rod gas tank, so maybe I should be asking in those forums (didn't see much on a search). I understand what the level sender is supposed to do, but mine doesn't have great contact between the wiper and the track. It's intermittent at best and hasn't read consistent resistance since day 1.

Do I just have a bad one? Is there a different kind of replacement that is better-liked? Is there something that's not gas-soluble that I can put on it to increase contact?

Its probably bad, but you can bench test it and see if it works smoothly when you run it through its travel. Its a looks like a very common 87-93 Mustang sending unit, I picked up a Dorman one and has work perfectly for me. Not sure if the hot rod uses the same stock Mustang gas tank as the roadster, but that is my tank.

Yup, ran it through the range on my desk (pictured) and it's....skippy. Sometimes overlimit, and sometimes in the range, but never smooth. It seems to be a contact issue, but I can't seem to fix it. I believe it's the same as the roadster, so I'll give another a try. Thanks!

Should read 16-158 Ohms empty to full if you didn't already know that.

Hm. The Subie ECU wants 0-90. I've found a lot of the same physical layout with 16-158 and a lot of 0-90 with a different form factor. Any thoughts on what the part # of the FFR one with the old 818s is? Mine was indeed 0-90 ohm.

A 198 ohm in parallel would give me my 90 and 14 when full, which wouldn't be the end of the world (15% off, linearly)

Sorry, I assumed when you said Mustang that it would be the 16-158. What reading do you get at the low and full float levels?

It appears identical to the sender from my original 818 tank. Mine reads pretty consistently 90-94 Ohms full and 3-9 ohms empty, but like yours is rather erratic in the mid range. Maybe only full and empty really matter?
