Ready or not I think it's paint time. Wifey wants red so I guess it's going to be red. Wife would like Ford Ruby Red but when I met with Jeff Miller he suggested a non 3 stage paint would be e better choice and less expensive. Next best we picked out was 2003 Ford Redfire Metallic code G2. If anybody has this color could you post some pics, or if you happen to live in Southern California maybe I could look at it.
Also would be open to other red's if it's a dark/deep red. Not really looking for bright candy eye popping color even though they look fantastic.
Thanks,
Ken

I believe his user name is edwardb - he's on both forums a lot.

That is a 3 stage (Ford code RZ).

Sorry, I don't know much about paint yet. What do you mean by 3 stage? Is that primer, color, clear? Would a two stage use a paint that does not use a clear coat? How much of a cost savings is there and is different prep required?

A 3 stage paint job starts with a base coat ( it may look nothing like the color you end up with). Second stage is a tinted clear (every coat adds depth and continues to modify the original base coat after coat. The 3rd stage is just clear coat to protect everything underneath. If you know anything about "old school" CANDY APPLE RED or, candy paint job, they are basically the same process. I shy away from doing them for three reasons. 1. Repairability can be extremely difficult due to the tinted clear (not something I want my customers to have to deal with if there is a mishap). B. extra cost involved in material. 3, Some of them are a real stinker to paint and I don't want to loose my butt if it goes South....I can do it.....BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE ME.....and if you do I'M TELLIN MY MOM! so there...da Bat

Everything my friend Miller said. I like pictures (cause you know they're worth a thousand words) so here's an example of a beginning base coat:
https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43514660_1738505766272124_7668882068008337408_n.jp g?_nc_cat=100&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=cfb3682d7f1bb72600bb55504305b1d6&oe=5D586BF8
Then after the tinted mid coat:
https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43750762_1739755859480448_7276824624162144256_n.jp g?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=981dc3431cad8a1cdf739faef12b025c&oe=5D9CAE91
And finally after the top coat clear:
https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43877723_1741649332624434_6010877997144342528_n.jp g?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-ort2-1.xx&oh=c4b9d4716fce25222d27a77f771d8d3f&oe=5D8B05B0
You wouldn't have guessed end that in the beginning would you.
So yeah, like da Bat said repairs if ever needed are difficult to match, materials are costly (there's about $3K worth of liquids on the one in the photos above) and there is additional labor because the car has to effectively be painted 3 times.

Yep. Everything the Jeff's said. My 20th Anniversary Roadster is Ford Red Candy 2, code RZ. Tri-coat with a base, tinted mid, and clear. I get all the concerns about cost, touch-up, etc. But sure is purty. This was mine in the booth after the base coat. A little like the one Jeff K. posted.

Thanks all. I found a G2 painted car locally that I hope to take a look at. Thankfully we have a couple of Jeff's out there that can walk us through the fitment and paint process. What's wrong with rattle cans from AutoZone anyway?
