I have noticed that some builders orient the gas cap hinge parallel to trunk, while others position it at a 45 degree angle towards front driver seat. The cap seems to open without hitting the body in either position.
What are the pros and cons of each position?
What position is true to the original 427s?

I've clocked mine like you did in your 2nd pic.
It seems to feel more natural for me when I open it.
Also, I think it gives me the maximum clearance between the cap and the body.

I've heard that some folks end up with a whistle when the cap is in the "straight" position. I cocked mine off center, about midway between your shots. Mine opens about parallel with the outside of the fender:

Here is mine. Not quite as big of an angle. Works great for me.
If you visualize a straight line from the center of the latch through the center of the hinge, it points pretty close to the center of the steering wheel.

I'm a rebel. My OCD tells me this looks best. Plenty of body clearance when opening the cap.

Position it so it's easy to open. Seeing as I'm right handed, having the latch at about the 2 o'clock position, and hinge at about 7 o'clock seemed the easiest to open and close.
