I have installed the KRC power steering system that has the resevoir on the pump. I followed the instructions to put the bracket that came with the kit on. I find that when I am tightening the bracket down, the bolts get real tight before tightening up to the spacers between the motor and the bracket. They are only supposed to be torqued to 18 ft/lbs as well and I have done this but it leaves about a quarter inch of "slack."

Anyone have experience with this?

I've installed a couple of those. I'm remembering that the bolts in maybe more than one location going into the block or head were too long. Had to trim them slightly. Check the bolts holes with a depth gauge, micrometer, whatever, and compare to the exposed threads coming out of the bracket. I'll bet your bolts are bottoming out.

That is what I'm thinking. The thing about it, that I forgot to mention earlier, is the belt seems aligned. I'm afraid if I run shorter bolts, will this pull the assembly in more and throw the belt alignment off?

I'm not following something. Are you saying that even with the "slack" you're describing the belt is in alignment? That doesn't sound right. Sure you have the bracket and all the spacers properly installed, e.g. right orientation, locations, etc.? It should be in alignment with everything tight. Maybe some pictures.

Sorry for the sideways photos. I don't have a laptop and trying to get this done over the phone isn't fun.

The pulleys are lined up. The outside (passenger side) is tight to the head. The two inner spaces have the slack in them.

It's a little hard to tell from your pictures. But I'm betting you have the spacers in the wrong locations. I looked for my instructions, but unfortunately couldn't find them. I do recall there are two different length spacers, and the instructions show where to place each. FWIW, took this pics of my under construction Coupe with the same setup.

From the front, on the left. To my eye, you have a longer one here which would case the others to not seat down properly:

On the right. Confirm from the instructions, but pretty sure this one is longer than the others:

I just bolted my setup on a few days ago, and if I recall correctly the two short spacers are "inboard"/on the block, the longer one out on the ear of the bracket...

I am about 75% sure thst is how I set it up. Also both of the inner ones are loose which makes me believe that it is set up this way. I will tear into it again to verify.

Just looked again for my instructions since I did that install on the Coupe a couple months ago. Can't find... But I do remember from that installation and the similar one in #8674 a couple years ago (same except doesn't have the integral tank) that there are different length spacers and the instructions specifically state which ones go where. Follow the instructions I'm betting your problem should be resolved. I didn't have trouble with either not seating down properly or the belt aligning.

They were on right. The bolts are bottoming out. Headed to get shorter bolts and see how it lines up.

Not surprised about the bolts, because I remember that happening to me as well. As I mentioned before. I just lopped them off with a cut-off wheel rather than buying new. But do what you're comfortable with.

But I did find the KRC instructions (in the box, go figure...) and confirmed there are two lengths of spacers. 1.100 inch spacers go in the top and left (from the front). The longer 1.200 inch spacer goes in the lower right (again from the front). Note this is different than mentioned before. If you have the longer one in the left hand (e.g. outboard) location that's going to explain when it's not mounting correctly. Did you receive the directions with your kit?

I have a Johnsons with a huge bolt section a couple miles from my house. I find that I don't have the best luck in keeping the threads straight when cutting bolts.

I don't remember if I got the physical instructions. I have been going here for all of my instructions:

http://www.factoryfiveparts.com/instructions/

I have stacked all the paperwork in a box to put together after the build.

Hmm. I use that directory all the time, but hadn't noticed before the KRC installation instructions. This is the sheet KRC supplies in the box. Confirms the location of the longer spacer I mentioned before, same as the Factory Five instructions.
