View Full Version : How Much Carpet?

I've currently got the body off my car for some minor upgrades, including installation of a dropped trunk box.

While I'm at it, I'm going to re-carpet the cockpit and the trunk. Does anybody know how much carpet I'll need, assuming I purchase it from a 72" roll?

Factory Five says to purchase 2 linear yards (4 square yards) to do the trunk, so I need to know how much I'll need for the cockpit.

I would buy the carpet from them and trim it, I bet its not much different mk3 to 4. You could buy the interior and trunk carpet cut now. Just call them. Good luck.

If you want a FFR carpet set I will sell mine to you. I chose to go with an upgrade and go with nicer stuff.

I too will be selling my carpet as I'm going with a different color interior.

Hi everyone.

So I see no-one actually answered the question. I am in a similar position of wanting to do the same for my cobra, ie, replace all the carpet. Can anyone advise how much I need to buy? And no, I am not keen on buying it from Factory Five as I am thinking a different colour.

Thank you

Just re-carpeted a MK4 and used a little over 5-1/2" sq yds. for the entire car. Also used 5 cans of spray glue if that helps.

My carpet guy ordered 7 yards of black 40" wide for the cockpit and 2.5 yards 80" wide for the trunk. He is doing piping around the edges of the floor pans and we are going with leather over the tunnel so that will not have carpet. The 40"wide brings some challenges and I wanted the minimum amount of seems so extra was ordered.

I went with Detroit 800 series a1080 black for the cockpit and Grey flex form backless carpet 1668 for the trunk. The backless molds over everything very nicely.

I just finished my trunk today and used 40 square feet. That's for the trunk, drop trunk area, and the Breeze cubby.

I ended up buying 8 square yards and did the entire car including the trunk with a little left over.

RJD, did you also use grey flex1668? If so, is cutting required and do you remember the square ft required

No, I used outdoor carpet from Home Depot - Traffic Master Sky Grey, sku 203469232. It comes off a roll 7ft wide and I bought a six foot length.

I cut everything as follows and then trimmed to fit. I used 3M Super 77 spray on adhesive.

- The main trunk area: 4ft x 4ft *(I have the Breeze trunk cubby. Without the cubby, you might want this 4ft wide x 5ft long).
- DS wall: 4ft x 1 ft/*(5ft x 1ft)
- PS wall: 4ft x 1ft /*(5ft x 1ft)
- Back wall: 4ft x 1ft
- Cubby inside wall (other side of back wall): 4ft x 1ft
- Cubby floor: 4ft x1ft
- DS cubby wall: 1ft x1ft
- PS cubby wall: 1ft x 1ft

Thanks for the detail. And, I can barely see the seams.

Jay,
I've used this from Menards on my own car as well as 2 or 3 others:

Really easy to work with. I've always just applied it directly to the aluminum using 3M Super 77 spray on both surfaces. Black is also available but I've used gray to allow a little more visibility in the dark trunk.

Cheers,
Jeff

Jeff,

I should have looked at yours when I was there. Thanks again for the excellent body work and paint and it was well worth the wait. And, thanks for all the little touches I noticed such as better securing of the elephant ears to the body; trunk, doors and hood weather stripping; addressing the license plate holder and many other improvements.

Hope to see you at LCS.

The fun begins with installing trunk carpeting with the body on. I don't like the idea of spray adhesive in the vicinity of a freshly painted body. Carpet adhesive it is.
