The Redbone Roadster

What Redbone Means:

The word REDBONE is a Cajun term for a person of mixed-race, which the REDBONE BAND adopted to signify their mixed ancestry...The combined ethnic groups include Native American, African and European so these people are unique because they are the culmination of many cultures...Since my car is also made up of mixed origins, Truly A Louisiana Gumbo, it is only fitting that it be given this name since it is neither Ford nor Chevy nor Shelby, but something totally different and unique.

REDBONE / The Band:
The Vasquez-Vegas brothers were of Yaqui, Shoshone, and Mexican heritage...They began by performing and recording surf music as the Vegas Brothers, later as the Crazy Cajun Cakewalk Band, where they performed throughout the 1960s at venues on the Las Vegas Strip...In addition, the band often alluded to Cajun and New Orleans culture in their lyrics and performing style.

I think you put it in backwards. The distributor should be in the front. Oh yeah, it's a Chebby. Congrats, Steve! It's good to see you back on track.

Thanks For All The Well Wishes & Support!

Our goal is to get it on the road and legal in the Red Gel Coat so that we can do a proper shake down before painting the sucker.
Since we had such a long delay with life issues, I just want to Drive This Thing a while before I have to pull it apart for paint.

Ok Gang,

I've had the chance to drive my car around the neighborhood (Rural Roads Only) and had the joy of taking more than a few of my neighbors for rides.
The car drives very well and the block change allowed me to upgrade the camshaft to an OEM style hydraulic roller setup.
The drivability is greatly improved and I can now run it at 1,600-1,700 RPMs without any stumbling or lurching.
Those RPM numbers are important because I needed to hit 1,700 RPM in order to do 70 MPH in 6th.

I've logged about 25-30 miles so far on the new block so I have one question for you all:

How many miles have you guys put on your Go-Karts before you decide that it is time for paint?

My pal and Build Guru (Darrell-Darrell) is itching to paint the car for me at the exorbitant prices of One Dollar.
We've only been friends for 30 years so the car will be in very good hands.
This is the fellow who set the engine and transmission and fabbed/modified my headers plus he builds street-rods from scratch. (Scratch = NAZ Style)

For me I knew I had to get the paint done BEFORE I drove the car or it would be a long long time before I pulled the body again. As it is, I couldn't wait for the graphics and took the car thinking I'd get the graphics painted on after a couple weeks. That was almost four months ago and still too busy sorting out the car to give it back to the painter.

So if you're like me you better get the paint done first before you license the car and start driving it.

Hi steve! For me it was all ways get legal then drive the car to see if and where the problems would show up. Have done a lot of body work so it is mostly in primer, put on 1700 miles and decided to change some things (twin turbos - water to air coolers & heat exchanger - fuel system) that makes for more body work!! So if you think of any changes or problem areas = wait to paint, if all good to go then paint and be done!

Hey Steve,

Mark Dougherty gave me some very sound advice early on in my build. Drive it in gel-coat for 1 year before thinking about paint. I am very glad I took his advice. I've added/changed things that would be difficult on a painted car and with my driveline issues, I am very glad the car is still in gel-coat.

I don't think there is a right answer. I've done them with zero miles, >4,000 miles and everything in between. More often than not the ones with more miles were simply because my schedule wouldn't allow me to take the car earlier.

NOTE TO BUILDERS: Don't wait until you are "just about ready for paint" to start making your body & paint plans because you're liable to be disappointed when you learn that guys like me, Miller, Pike and Whitby aren't sitting around waiting for the phone to ring wondering when the next car is going to come along. Just sayin'... :)

Excellent Point Sir Jeff-Ski,

Darrell-Darrell is working on his son's Jeep Rock Crawler right now and will have a clear bay in his shop in late March or early April.
I need to be ready to go when the Jeep goes home to his Baby Boy's place and that bay is open for painting purposes.

I logged 10 more miles this weekend and so far so good; however, I'm still paranoid after having to replace the block.
The car performs well and is plenty quick even with the rev limiter sitting at a conservative 4,000 R.P.M. limit.
I've played with the Edelbrock AVS 800 and it is no longer burping or popping under initial acceleration.
Though most folks don't like these carburetor, I'm finding it is working very well for my application.
We will be fitting the windshield next weekend and hopefully, it will be a fairly easy task.
I hope it will be easier than most since I moved the fuse block the passenger side.
I guess it is what you do when you become one with The Dark Side!

With some excellent advice from Jeff Kleiner and the steady hands of my wife (Davey) we fitted the windshield.
It is sitting in place with a couple of spacers on each side and one motorcycle tie down to nail it at the 27" sidearm to door opening space.
Now all I need to do is mark, drill, tap, shim, and bolt it in place in order to properly mount that sucker.
Please know that I'm still debating on the "Sir EdwardB" tap it option.

Thanks Jeff & Davey!

Hey Gents,

Where do you all like the windscreen center to be sitting/mounted to avoid AC Bill's cracking scenario?

A. Touching/Sitting On The Body.
B. 1/8" Above The Body.
C. 1/4" Above The Body.
D. 3/8" Above The Body.

Please vote early and feel free to vote often if you have done multiple builds.

Thanks,

It's not about where the center is. For about the hundredth time...if you don't want the windshield to crack DON"T TRY TO BEND IT! By that I mean that it has to remain completely relaxed when it is attached to the chassis and to accomplish this you must adjust &/or shim the "arms" so that when the bolts between them and the chassis are tightened no pressure is introduced to the glass. If you have a gap between the arms and chassis then pull them up tight you're going to be putting pressure on the glass (i.e. trying to bend it ) and it will eventually crack. Funny story, when building the SEMA coupe Ron, Henry and I were talking about this subject and how important it is...almost 75 roadsters built between us and exactly zero cracked windshields. But maybe we're just lucky.

Oh, and yeah, tap it!

I drove with the body in Gelcoat for about 500 miles. I did find several things I wanted to modify after driving for a while. Modified DS footbox - gas pedal side, added power brakes, dash center panel support. Give yourself plenty of time to analyze everything... make sure you're happy.

Well Jeff here's my story, My white car which was sold to Mark, had well over 20,000 mile, no cracked windshield. When I mounted that windshield I didn't use any shims, just cranked the bolts down tight. My current car, which has less that 3000, had the windshield shimmed tight, walked into the garage one morning, and there was the crack. SO, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Thanks Ducky,

Prior to pulling the engine last year, we logged about 35-45 miles.
Since we did the motor R & R, I rerouted my fuel line from the pump to the carb, moved alternator feed wire and added a rev-limiter.
My next mod will be a change to the radiator fan wiring so that I can kick it on with a manual switch.
So far I've logged about 50-75 miles on the new block and worked on getting it properly tuned.
I just want to be done with the testing and done with the car as soon as possible.

Installed hood plus the door latches recently.
Logged 5 more miles this afternoon and so far so good.
I bumped rev limiter up to 4,200 R.P.M from 4,000 R.P.M. limit.
Hope to get after the hood and trunk latches if time permits tomorrow afternoon.
Progress is slow because we are helping our oldest daughter and our son in law get their home ready for sale.

Still looking for a licence plate solution so it looks like I'll be doing The Kleiner Mod if I don't go off the reservation once again.
So far this is the only solution that somewhat appeals to me, other than the Sir Jeffski Soluation, is the frame shown below:

Steve: Here is my solution (you need to look close). There is no critical info in the marking at the bottom center of the AZ plate, so I notched the plate to fit over the trunk handle. (You need to look close) Although the "Kleiner Mod" is one solution, I was not comfortable cutting the lens of the light.

A closer image of my license plate mod...I used a hole saw to make the hole at the handle location (...measure twice, cut once...), then used sharp snips to cut the bottom, extending from the edges of the hole. I used a bit of left-over edge protector to dress up the hole a bit. The license plate frame is not modified and effectively hides the hole! :)104918

We logged some test miles, on the trailer this time, and took the Cobra to two car shows on Saturday.
To say the least the car was well received at both venues, even by the Two Cobra Replica Owners (ERA & Contemporary) that I met.
Since both Cobra Replicas were FE Powered, those fellows couldn't believe the amount of room I had under the hood compared to their rides.

All of the folks that I talked to were surprised at the quality of the build, quality of the unpainted body and shocked when I fired it up.
For those that don't know a 383 SBC tends to be a little loud with 10.00 to 1 compression, tall port heads, single plane intake and a healthy cam.
I will likely need to look into some Quiet Pipes once we are titled and street legal because I've got a noise problem, a big one.

2. Added two 5/8" spacers under the front fenders, near the X-Brace, to better support the body.
3. Reset the timing, removed the vacuum advance and adjusted the carburetor.
4. Messed with the oil temperature sending unit to get that gauge kicking once more.
5. Logged 10-15 more test miles after these minor projects were done.

Next project will be an oil change and coolant flush.

We just got back from putting 15-17 more test miles on the car and so far things seem to be going well, but I must admit to being paranoid.
The new circuit for the fan is working out perfectly since we hand an issue with the relay giggling loose.

> I adjusted the timing, idle mixtures and choke after the engine was up to proper operating temperatures. (165-185 Water / 185-200 Oil)
> I've disconnected the vacuum advance which has made a great improvement in drive-ability since I don't pull a lot of vacuum anyway.
> The car is fairly happy between 1,500-1,700 RPM once it is warmed up properly, but below 1,500 the car lugs a good bit as expected.
> A Fairly Large Camshaft, Big Heads, Single Plane Intake, 800 CFM Carb Shouldn't Like To Operate That Low But They Are Doing Well!
> We added the aluminum tabs for the hood latches to rest in and notched them so they stay put without having to be locked in place.
> The Rev-Limiter is still set at 4,200 RPM's since we are in test and tune mode while breaking in the engine at the same time.
> Ordered a nice Dura-Block kit, various sand paper grits and 3M Premium Marine Filler since I'm familiar with that stuff.

So far we've logged around 95-100 test miles and burned about 10-12 gallons of gas.
This is a Guesstimate since the Speedo isn't hooked up, but one round-trip on my normal route is 5 miles.

I started sanding today using a couple of little air sanders that seem to be working pretty well.
The goal is to take down the Mold Parting Lines before I get into the heavier sanding.
Shown below are the items that I recently purchased:

2" Mini Dual Action Sander:
https://www.harborfreight.com/air-angle-sander-93629.html

3/8" Mini Belt Sander:
https://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-Belt-Air-Sander-60627.html

Hopefully these two little sanders will help me keep the body filler to a minimum.
I'll be sure to post a video, including my opinion of these tools, once this task has been completed.
I've been given some Expert Advice from a well known professional builder/painter so lets hope I can make this happen.

Amazed at how much refinement has been done with the mold process on the MK4 body, compared to the previous models. Did FFR hire a new company to make them?
The parting lines on my 3.1 body were just nasty compared to yours, and supposedly the 3.1 body's, were a big improvement over the previous models.:p

AC Bill,
I don't know who is building the bodies, but there is a huge difference between MK-4 and the earlier series.
I actually looked at other builders, prior to the MK-4 arrived, because the earlier F-5 bodies were a tad rough; however, their chassis were the best of them all.

Presto51
My kit was produced in early 2015 and the chassis number is 8,515.
Be advised that I won't be going off of Jeff's play book so hopefully I'll one day earn that coveted P.O.M. honor, but that's a long way away.

The last of my body work supplies arrived today which included multiple Dura Blocks, various Dura sandpaper rolls, Evercoat Rage Gold Premium Filler and Evercoat Fiber Tech to work the upper inner corner's of the doors.

I plan to sand the body by hand, using a trace coat, prior applying any body filler.

I've finally started the sanding process and have found that my work smoothing the parting lines is really paying off.
I'm trying hard to pay attention to what I am doing so that when I start to apply the Evercoat Rage Gold I will be able to do so very sparingly.
The goal is to paint the car Dodge Challenger Torred, with no stripes, no scoop in an attempt to keep it simple and in the flavor of CSX-3178.
Hopefully it will be Jeff Kleiner Kool once completed because Jeff has been coaching me every step on this phase of my build.

Lake Pontchartrain is getting filled from the East from the counter clockwise rotation of the storm.

Logged 10 more test miles on the back roads near my home, then took the car to a Hot Rod Run via the shameful use of my car trailer.

> The car was a big hit with the Chevy Guys, but not so much with the Ford Fans.
> Quite a few parents seemed to really like the car, probably because I let them put their kids in it.

My pals Heath (351 Windsor) and Donny (396 Ford Edsel) brought their cars so Factory Five was well represented.

NOTE VIA WIKIPEDIA:
"FE" derives from 'Ford-Edsel.
[1] Versions of the FE line designed for use in medium and heavy trucks and school buses from 1964 through 1978 were known as "FT," for 'Ford-Truck,'[2] and differed primarily by having steel (instead of nodular iron) crankshafts, larger crank snouts, smaller ports and valves, different distributor shafts, different water pumps and a greater use of iron for its parts.

I've been busy at work so I only get to do a few test miles here and there.

> Water temperature is hanging around 165-175 so I'm guessing the crazy thick cylinder walls are keeping the temperatures low in spite of the 185 degree thermostat.
> The block is a Dart SHP which can be bored to 4.165", but I'm way below that at 4.030" so I'm assuming that this is a mitigating factor for the low temperature.
> Oil temperature seems to be a bit high 205-210 F; however, my sender is on a sandwich adapter between the block and the oil filter with no oil cooler.
> I'm seriously thinking about moving the sender to the oil pan, but don't feel like pulling the pan to install the sender.
> Maybe when the body is off at the paint shop I'll consider making this change.
> Not sure it if would be work going through the hassle or not.

What Say You Guys & Gals?

Boydster
09-30-2019, 05:28 AM
I think as long as you know your standard, you're fine. Just moving the sender may get you different numbers, but down the road, are we really looking at numbers or are we just watching to see if anything has changed?
Oil temp normally runs a little hotter than water temp, and you're well below the point where the oil starts to break down more rapidly.
I would leave it where it is.

CraigS
09-30-2019, 05:54 AM
Oil at 205-210 is absolutely not a problem. I have read on many occasions that getting it over 212F is a good thing as that will boil out any condensation.

Jeff Kleiner
09-30-2019, 05:59 AM
Reading the temperature of active oil such as you have it rather than in the sump is actually a good thing. You have it in a good place and don't seem to have a problem. You'll eventually find that RPM has a greater effect on oil temp than ambient temperature.

Carry on!

Thanks Gentlemen!

This is the first time I have used a sandwich adapter for this purpose.
In the past I ran one simply to run an oil cooler, never an oil temperature sending unit.
Boiling off any condensation, well that's a good thing when you live where the humidity runs in the 80-95% mark most of the years.

For the record I'm going very slow with the sanding and take breaks when I get frustrated since I'm A 100% Body Work Virgin!

I knocked the parting lines down with a 2" Mini D/A.
https://youtu.be/_3sLamdkIFg

Next I went after it with my 5" D/A.
https://youtu.be/meBYeI96_A8

Now I'm using my Dura-Blocks and Sanding in an X-Pattern plus using a Black Guide Coat to expose any low spots.

I'll start using the Rage Gold & Fiber Tech body fillers, both are Evercoat products, once I'm happy with the body.

Before I apply any filler I'll degrees the body, and rough it up with 80 grit once I have the low spots identified.

Hope This Helps!

Dave,

Jeff and I have discussed the quality of my body versus others like yours on several occasions.
Having built more than a few fiberglass boats in my youth, it pains me to see shoddy glass work.
Mold preparation (waxing & buffing) seam sealing with the modeling clay and final mold alignment are all necessary to get good parting lines.

Point is, we put timelines on ourselves that sometimes don't take in all variables. This helped me when I needed to go back and fix something I had initially done wrong, or was hit with a setback.

If you truly hate bringing in help, and if it's going to eat at you because you had a goal of completing everything yourself, then be patient. But I agree with Papa, someone else working on the car with you or for you would be a great way to get the project over the hump and done.

You've done a fantastic job on your dark side build, and you've had several setbacks that you've overcome. It's definitely in you to complete it.

Best Regards,
Dave

Enter Sam Man!

We've made great progress on the bodywork with all of the mold parting lines smoothed, filled, blocked and trace coated.
Thankfully the body we are working with is excellent compared to most we've seen on the forum in recent years.
Our next phase will be to attack the doors, specifically where they meet the dash cowling intersection area.
The Sam Man (Samuel Olsen) is doing an excellent job and he is truly an excellent teacher too.

I also ordered a new pair of headers on Friday because I think I can do a better job getting the angle on the dangle looking better with a new set.
Currently I've got some Breeze Wedges in place and would like to avoid using them if possible.
At $200.00, it is a small price to pay for a set of headers.

That means I had a Gapping Good Time until my fingers got a bit torn up so I had to call it a day.

Steve my friend,
3/16” dry (i.e. before primers, paint and clear) is gonna’ be tight once everything is on it, especially at the leading edges of the doors and trunk.

Joe,

I'm a smidgen past 3/16" on all of my gaps, but still under 1/4".
It wasn't easy, nor fun to do them all by hand, but the gaps are extremely uniform.
Using one gauge and a lot of patience really paid off for this part of the build.

The body will be going to Dependable Paint & Body where Sir Sammy will tackle that aspect of the process before handing it off to their painter.

2. Installing the Kilmat and upgraded 20 oz. marine carpeting.

You just need to set the final ride height and then align. When you add weight simply adjust the springs to bring it back to that height and the alignment will return to exactly the same.

I was really close on my Eye-Ball / Sheet Rock Square / Level / Angle Finder Method so he, Mr. Buck, was done in 15 minutes...Next I went over to Ernie's (Dependable Paint & Body) to view the back of hood, trunk & doors to okay the color...Then I took a 70-Plus Go Kart Ride and the car tracked straight and felt good.

In summary the car felt controllable and stable so my next tasks is to install the horn, foot box ventilation forward tubes, e-brake and shifter boots then wait for the paint to be perfected.

Great stage for the car. It looks great. Tell me about the ramps on the trailer. I have a car hauler trailer and the ramps are too short. I have been shopping, but have not found what I think I want. Are you pleased with those and any info is appreciated.

I don't recall where I bought them, possibly AMAZON, but these are the ramps.

Hola Steve.
Congratulation! I am sure you will have the car finished soon, just in time to attend this year's Cruise the Coast in October.
Looking forward on seeing more photos...

I've been busy doing other stuff, like restructuring Small Business loans, but I was able to get in the garage today to do a little bit more work on Redbone.

Thanks Gentlemen!

Sorry the color is coming out sort of Orangeish in the video.
The color is 2020 Dodge Challenger Torred and it is a color that really does the car justice.
The game plan for tomorrow is to polish the pipes before I reinstall them.

Hey Sir Jeffski,

Sorry about the delay on the car but we've been a bit busy on the home front once again.
We helped our oldest daughter Megan & husband Nic move to N.C. so she could attend Law School @ Wake Forest.
In addition, our youngest daughter Emma & her fiance Jarret are getting over the China Virus (COVID-19) so you get the picture.
We also finished settling my Mom's estate and now have her house up for sale.
To say the least, it has been one of those life got in the way kind of months.
Thanks for all the help getting me to this point!
