View Full Version : Rear Harness Connector Question

Sorry guys, but stupid question of the day. I'm connecting my rear harness to the main harness and this connector has a male and female, but the plastic sleeving around each connector keeps them from going together. Do I need to remove the sleeving off of one side so it will slide together or how does that work?

You appear to have male and female wire connectors but the housings are both the same, ie both are male. You need to switch one to a female.

Thanks. How do I go about doing that? Is there a way to pull the sheathing off of one side? Want to make sure I don’t jack this up.
You need a weatherpack pin removal tool and a new 4-pin portion of the connector.

Decide which end you want to de-pin (recommend the one you are holding in your picture) and slide the tool over the metal pin inside the plug while gently pulling the wire from the back side. Be sure you open the cover on the plug first. It just snaps closed. Pay attention to the orientation of the wires and be sure to reassemble the new connector with the wires in the same orientation.

Thanks for the instructions and links Dave. Greatly appreciated. I wanted to get some Weatherpack practice, but these small inaccuracies get a little aggravating. Maybe I should buy a larger kit of these for the tail lights.

If you plan to use these connectors later, then I recommend getting the ratcheting crimper as well. For your lights, I recommend the three-circuit connectors. You'll need eight of them and some 12 gauge pin sets for the headlights. To swap over the plug you are dealing with right now, you won't have to crimp anything. Just pull the pins out of the incorrect plug end and insert them into the correct plug end. If you PM me your address, I'll send you a four-pin plug. I bought a pack of ten and didn't use any of them.

The 4-pin connector on the light harnesses is a little unfortunate. If you wire up the lights using a single 4-pin connector set, you won't be able to get the fixtures back out of the holes. Most guys re-wire the 4-corners with two 3-pin connectors on each corner. One for each fixture.

If its the worst thing that happens, count myself fortunate I suppose. I'll take yours and Dave's advice on the 4 corner, 3 pin connectors. Should make things easier in the long run.

Was the harness pre-assembled with those connectors? If so, it seems odd there would be two male ends. You sure that is the correct location for the harness, and it is not meant to be used elsewhere?

Yes, it was assembled that way which is a little puzzling. It’s on the same pigtail as the other connector which fit fine.
