Where to find historically accurate Information

My goal is to build an as historically accurate 289 replica as I'm able. Whether that will be the USRRC or FIA, I haven't decided. I really like the Ken Miles 289 USRRC CSX2431 (https://shelbyamericancollection.org/cars/1964-usrrc-cobra-roadster-csx2431/), but I certainly can't go with the racing windscreen.

Anyway, where can I get information on the historically accurate mechanicals (engine, transmission), dash layout, location/type fluid reservoirs, etc, etc? I have the book on the Shelby American Collection, which is very good, but mostly filled with racing stories. I bought the Haynes manual (hasn't arrived), but have heard it's not all that accurate. Any suggestions?

Hi Terry,

I have a couple of books that I used as reference. Unfortunately I have not found one single source that covers it all. There is some written information in both of these books but much of the reference is photographic. Anyway, they were useful to me.

I’m reading this book right now. Lots of pictures. Some history. Very nice hard cover binding. But in the book Colin says straight out:

“[This book] isn’t about the nuts and bolts of Cobras. I’m not going to present mind-numbing technical charts that describe the thread pitch on every fastener in a Cobra or bore you with production changes and the like. There are dozens of excellent books and reference manuals for that, including my own The Complete Book of Shelby Automobiles, ...”1

I recently ordered The Complete Book of Shelby Automobiles but it hasn’t arrived yet.

Also, according to the Amazon reviews, the Shelby Cobra The Snake that Conquered the World book is 99% the same as Shelby Cobra Fifty Years. Shelby Cobra The Snake that Conquered the World is updated with some nice fold out graphics and has a nicer binding.

Consider reaching out to Erik Treves.
He researched the heck out of CSX-2001 before taking on his 289 build.
Erik has done multiple over the top builds and built the first F-5 289 which was featured at SEMA 2014.
I saw that car at the beginning of the Hot Rod Power Tour a couple of years back and it was impressive as hell.
