View Full Version : CV Axle Install Question

Installing my CV axles tonight for the IRS and have a question. I have determined which one is left and right. As I'm installing the cv axle, it won't go in but maybe an inch after its made contact with the interior spline, although I feel it engage the grooves. I looked on the end of the axle and there is a clip that kind of bows up a bit. It's the same on both cv axles.

I'm guessing that this is responsible for 'clicking' in the cv axles when they are all the way inserted, but seems as if the same clip is keeping the cv axle from going all the way in.

Didn't want to get too aggressive with it...YET...but thought I'd ask you guys first. Does this clip need to be depressed or is there a particular way that that axle as to be inserted?

Also, my shaft is a little dry (that sounded bad)...so I might be one of the reasons its not going in easily, but I think the clip is the main one.

Thoughts?

The beginning of the splined hole inside the differential is tapered. As you push the axle stub in there, it compresses the clip and allows the axle shaft to be inserted all the way. Just takes some force. A little lubricant is helpful.

Thanks Bob. Got the first one to go in. It's about 1/8" out like it says in the book, but man, that thing won't budge with a plastic dead blow hammer. Will a 4lb engineering tool be too aggressive on the end of the shaft with nut?

Actually, I think I'm there, and just didn't know it. I installed the other side and the gap that I'm left with is identical. I heard the right side bottom out as I was hitting with the dead blow...Didn't hear the other side as maybe I wasn't paying attention. I pulled on both and they won't come out. Here's what it looks like. Do these look good to go?

X2 looks like you're all set. For the sake of others reading this thread, your experience is pretty typical. They take a little force, but not a lot. Making sure you have them in the right sides (like you mention), push into the center section up to the C-clip, then push the CV axle in to seat the inside CV joint against its internal stop (it slides), then with the axle straight, bump the end of the axle with a dead blow hammer. Doesn't take a lot. It should pop right in.

I appreciate the added assurance Paul. And you are right...doesn’t take much once you get it 98% of the way and understand how it all goes together.
