View Full Version : Oil cooler scoop

I was going to put a set of the Tangent driving lights in my oil cooler scoop. Website says Not Available. I contacted them and they said the lights are no longer sold anywhere in the world. He offered the kit at a higher price with better lights, but IMHO they dont fit or look as well. I did ask if they would sell me a kit with no lights, thinking I'd find my own lights to install and didnt get an answer.

I dont need an oil cooler as temps on the Mid-Atlantic are average. I've heard most F5 Roadsters dont need a cooler unless they are racing, and I only plan on the occasional autox.

Ideas on what to do with the scoop? Dont really want to leave it open as its obvious that there's nothing there and looks incomplete. Fake the oil cooler and lines? Build my own bracket and install my own lights?

Other ideas?

If your car has the authentic look, I would go for the cooler lines in the rad opening and a cooler in the bottom. If you have power steering you can always plumb it into the cooler.
I have no problems with the lower opening being empty and hope I can direct the cooler air to the intake box.

That's too bad. I've used the Tangent lights and they look good there. Most don't need an actual cooler. A fake one is an option, as mentioned. Some people put a grille in that opening, similar to the brake ducts. Doesn't look bad. Better than an empty opening.

Nowhere near the authentic look. Dual roll bars, hiback Kirkeys, no Halibrand style wheels, way off the original paint. But I do have the kick-back shifter and backwards speedo. ;)
I may put a cooler in there just to fill the hole or as you said, plumb it into the PS. Oil lines in the rad opening wont work cuz I'm going with the Replicaparts shroud in there.
Nice idea on using it for intake box air.

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed too. Already have the wiring, relay and switch installed for the lights. Think once I get the body back and hung, I'll look into mounting my own lights in there.
I looked at the grills, its a possibility. Be nice to keep the low flying sparrows out. ;)

Are you talking about an actual duct? Or the grills? I havent seen an oil cooler scoop duct...

The owner of one that I finished recently made tubular grilles for all of the front openings:

Too bad about the Tangent setup; I've always liked it. I installed what must have been one of the last sets on another car I did just a couple of months ago.

Cheers,
Jeff

My thought is give it what should have been there in the first place. A proper divergent duct true ram air system. :)

Thats pretty cool, Jeff. Goes right with the skinny paint stripes and the grills in the gills. Def custom.

If I had a ducted intake engine, thats most likely what I would do.

Mine has the "oil fooler" - an old-school look, but the lines are just stubbed in through the panels on the sides of the radiator. No need for a functioning oil cooler on the street, but my old-school look car needed this in the opening.

Same here, but with the Replica Parts radiator aluminum.

So you were able to make it work with the Replicaparts shroud. I like this...

That looks good, Gumball. Always respected your car and all the work you did, as well as all the helpful posts you put up...
