I was in the process of replacing the rear main seal on my 2002 4.6L, and I am worried that I have set the seal in too far. Can anyone confirm if the seal should be flush with the outer edge of the block, or if it should be set in farther? The bottom edge of my seal popped in a good 1/2" from the outer edge, and I am thinking that I need to remove it and start over with a new one.

Another issue that I ran into is that when I disassembled the main rear seal, there was a metal ring on the outside of the seal (looks like a dust shield). I believe this is referred to as a slinger, and I can find it for sale on the ford website, but felpro does not offer one.
Here it is on the Ford website:

Based on what I can see from Felpro, the oem dust cover is not to be replaced with the felpro part (Part # BS 40620). Waiting on a response from FelPro

Hi,
The factory oil slinger F65Z-6310-A (flange dust shield) should not be used with the Fel-Pro BS 40620 ream main bearing seal.
The seal should be driven flush with the RMB retainer plate. Ford calls out for special tools to remove & install the slinger and RMB seal. If you do not have access to these tools, find the appropriate size driver to install the seal. This is a rubber seal so you can apply some lube to the sealing lip.
