I have the opportunity to buy a running and roadworthy 93 Impreza for around 1500.00. I read on the FAQ list that any 93 and up Impreza can be a donor, but that thread is 5 years old now. If I were to choose this car for a donor, what parts would I have to find and is it worth it? Can I use the 2wd automatic trans? What about other things? Does anyone have experience with the early cars?
Should I just keep looking for that cheap WRX?

Ehh, that's a 25 year old car. Every seal and gasket should be replaced on age alone. Not to mention the questionability of suspension components, transmission longevity, etc.
Use it as a parts runner. I believe as a donor, it would be...disappointing.

The FFR build manual lists 02-07 Subaru Imprezas as suitable donors. Some of the suspension bits may be different for earlier model Imprezas but you could in theory use the motor from a 93 without too much trouble. As Brad says, it seems cheap but you'll end up paying for is later replacing worn out parts. I would find a cheap wrx. Aloha818 installed an auto trans in his 818 a few years ago.

Outside of the motor and trans nothing else will be the same fitment wise. But if that's all your after technically it would work. I wouldn't do all the work though just for a 1.8 or 2.2L motor. At least use a 2.5L NA.

The wiring diagrams were harder to follow in those earlier years too - minor thing maybe but you should get them and see what you think.

Thanks all for responding.
I failed to mention that I'm an ASE certified master mechanic who races street stock at my local track. Fabrication skills, tools and knowledge abound. Experience with trying to fit square pegs in round holes was my impetus in asking the question. My concern was mostly about which parts of this car would be compatible with the kit. Based on your opinions, It looks like I need round pegs (02-07 Subaru Impreza) for a trouble free and more enjoyable experience.
The frugal part of me always looks for a less expensive way to achieve satisfactory results. ;)
