Coyote flywheel question

Guys

Last week I successfully installed the engine / tko600 transmission and standard tko bellhousing. While I was under the car today swapping out the oil pan for the moroso pan I noticed the lower portion of the flywheel is exposed due to the tko bellhousing not covering it. Is this normal and fine to have the flywheel exposed like that ?

No, that piece called a block plate is mandatory. Normally it comes with the bell housing because they match each other.

Good catch BEAR-AvHistory. I incorrectly assumed (obviously) that piece was installed and the OP was asking about the small opening where the clutch fork comes out of the bell housing. That area also slightly exposes the flywheel. Original style bell housings had a cover for that opening, but most aftermarket bells don't and it's not a problem.

You will need to order new flywheel bolts. The Ford bolts are "one time use". The bell housing has bolt holes for the lower edge of the block plate to bolt up. You may need to start these 2 lower bolts before bolting the bell housing up tight. It seems like the space is too close, after the bell housing is installed.

Yeah, thats why I asked. My clutch fork does not have a boot.

It slips in without removing the flywheel. You only need to separate the bellhousing from the engine about a 1/4" and remove the starter. It will slide up.

I'm astonished - I played around with the blockoff plate for 20 minutes trying to get it in place without taking the flywheel off. I came away convinced that there's no way to put this on a Coyote without removing the flywheel. What's the trick?

The space at the top slides through the crank shaft extending to the flywheel. The bell housing separation will need to be enough to get the plate over the dowel pins. If it's hanging up on some unseen casting features, try bending the ears a little to help get past the problem. I assembled mine without removing the flywheel but the engine was on the pallet and easier to see how to guide it into place.

I don't want to ask this but I will.....did you take the starter off? Its should slide in with a bit of jiggling to get over the dowel pins. Its pretty flexible so you can pull on it quite a bit.

Mine was also on the pallet, prior to putting the bell housing on for the first time. Maybe I didn't try to bend the ears far enough toward the engine to clear some feature on that side of the flywheel. Nuts - that bit of information would have saved me from pulling the engine later, after realizing I'd re-used flywheel bolts.

All I successfully installed the backing plate this weekend, even with the engine and transmission still in place. All I had to do was remove the starter motor then loosen the bell housing bolts along with the transmission rear support mount. I jiggled the transmission away from the engine about an inch or so then persuaded the backing plate into place. Hardest part was torquing up the bellhousing bolts again ;)

You've got to be $***ing me! I just finished pulling the flywheel and installing the index plate with new bolts and Loctite 518. After pulling the flywheel, I THEN unpacked the index plate and noticed the seperation at the top but had never heard of anyone NOT pulling the flywheel, so I wrote it off. I can't believe I could've simply slipped the plate in there. Man I wish I saw this post 3 hours ago. lol

After pulling the flywheel, I THEN unpacked the index plate and noticed the seperation at the top but had never heard of anyone NOT pulling the flywheel, so I wrote it off. I did have to pull apart the separation a little on the plate for it to get past the flywheel, so the backing plate was a little bent out of shape, but it all returned back to normal once I got the plate lined up and the bellhousing torqued down again.
