I can only find one post from 2015 about this. I have the Gas-n Polished Stainless Steel Side Pipes on my MK4 and wanted to install heat shields. Wife keeps getting zapped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here you go.....

Have her wear these when she rides with you, she wont get zapped and the fashion!!

On a more serious note, my friend of 35 years who works in the automotive service industry and owns a motorcycle burned his leg on my exhaust after I displayed how to get in and out and after I reminded him multiple times to be cautious of the hot pipes they will burn him. He didn't tell me until later that evening he got burned and it was just a little pink at the time. After a few days it was at least a 3 inch diameter burn and it ended up getting infected. He needed a series of three penicillin shots and a prescription for oral antibiotics. His leg finally got better. Its a story I have to help remind passengers to be very careful.

I did hear the heat shields should help some but I also heard they get hot enough to burn you, so be careful.

I would think once would be enough for her to stretch her leg out a bit when exiting after the first hit on that pipe.

For some real help... Drummer Mike here on the forum has been supplying them for quite a while. Pretty sure he still does. PM him and see if they're still available. ********** also sells them: http://www.**********accessories.com/p-302-heat-shields-ceramic.aspx, http://www.**********accessories.com/p-303-heat-shields-chrome.aspx.

While the shields will keep from getting serious burns, the shield surface can still be hot and isn't comfortable to run into. Some have used these http://www.thepipesarehot.com/ or even just a welding blanket.

I use these sleeves and help my wife in and out of the Cobra. She loves the extra attention.

If i bought her a pair of those boots we would never make it to the car.

Thanks, saw the ********** and wanted to verify they work. Not really worth it if you still get burned. Don't quite understand the others. too much effort at each stop.

I bought an 18x18 welding blanket that I drape over the pipes and shields when I have someone that can't easily get out. Works great and can be stuffed behind the seat.

I have bought 2 of these...

...and plan on installing them inside the car, between the seat and doorsill. They are very flexible and will easily bunch up to stuff in there. They could be embroidered if desired. With a temp resistance to 1800*F, I dont think the pipes will burn it.

Use would simply be to open the door and unfold this small blanket out over the pipe, then tuck it away before closing the door.

All great replies. Many thanks. I have an idea and will make a pair to test. Desired outcome is simple and removable, but can be kept on while driving. Just need to acquire parts. Nothing I would sell, just something I would share if it works.

I use the pipes are hot sleeves. They can cover the entire area that can burn your legs unlike the metal shields. Down side is you have to slip them on and off all the time. Found out that my wife doesn't like to do that so she makes sure she clears the pipes everytime. Still there for the new passengers to use.

Hi gmagno,

Not everyone likes the looks of heat shields. Myself included. And to think you're going to run out from the drivers side and dig a welding blanket out of the trunk to help your Mrs. out of the car is...I think you know the answer. Another option though is the use of nomex sleeves. Worn on the lower calf, this material will protect the skin with intermittent touching up to 700F. Cost is about $25 and come in multiple colors.
