Wanted to start off the following of the Ohio C-car Club's build of the 2011 London C-car Show (LCS) raffle car.

http://www.ohiocobraclub.com/assets/modules/easy2/show.easy2gallery.php?id=3271

The Original: Dick Smith’s CSX 3035
As a tribute to the late Dick Smith, this year’s LCS raffle car is a replica of Dick’s famous Competition Cobra, CSX 3035, otherwise known as “The Winningest 427 Cobra” and Number 198. Along with winning numerous races, Dick set the all-time top speed record in a Cobra roadster, being clocked at 198 mph on the road course at Daytona in 1967.

The Replica: Factory Five Racing Mark IV
The raffle car will be FFR Mk4 complete kit with IRS option, assembled by the Ohio Cobra Club (and anyone else who wants to help). The drivetrain is a 427 center oiler mated to a Tremec 3550 5-speed transmission.

The kit arrived last week during our wonderful winter ice storm - A BIG thanks to Stewart transport who delivered the kit free of charge!

Build week is set for Mar 7-12 in Columbus. We're going to have the body painted prior to the start of build week so we can get the car as close to completed as possible by the end of the week.

Today I started by prepping the panels for the painter. I taped all the edges and traced the openings to set the body gaps. The stick taped to the hood is my gap tool. I wanted to make sure the painter had the same distance if he needed to work on the hood more (it is really oversized for the opening)

There is something cool about working in a small shop with Bill Pierce's Coupe parked next to you!

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn218/STL-Scott/OCC%20Stuff/PICT0013.jpg

I have to say after doing my own body work and paint on a Mk. 3.1 Roadster, I am really impressed by the body changes and the improvement on the body fit and finish of the Mk. 4. This is almost 1 year into the release of the Mk. 4 body style and it still looks really good (the layup, panel fit and seam flash).

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn218/STL-Scott/OCC%20Stuff/PICT0011.jpg

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn218/STL-Scott/OCC%20Stuff/PICT0009.jpg

Bill Dyer (OCC President) and I started to play with the door fitment, and found that the new hidden body side mounts make getting the doors to fit flush a lot easier. We removed the one self tapping screw that was installed for shipping and you can slide around the body sill which makes the doors fit a lot better then I could ever achieve on my Mk 3.1 body. Should make the actual prep work with the painter go quicker.

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn218/STL-Scott/OCC%20Stuff/PICT0010.jpg

Bill D. is looking at having the body painted on the frame is it stands next week, and then we will remove the painted shell for the Build Week. I helped mark the aluminum for trimming today, which is very few panels. Overall the body fits really good.

Thanks for the report Scott! I'd love to make it over to help out on the build some weekend but I'm kind of knee deep in trying to make sure that another red Mk4 is done in time for the parade into London! I'm glad you got to get up close and personal with a Mk4 body after we talked about my impressions of them last week. I've been busy today slathering Rage Gold on #7276 (but not as much ;)).

Cheers,
Jeff

Yes, please let us know where to buy tickets. Are you going to cut a hole in the hood and rivet the scoop on?

We'll do our part to help sell these tickets. I am looking for the 2003 video from Nats where Dick told us his story of running 198 mph at Daytona, verified etc, but when you hear the story it is so filled with reality, its like being in the car... The man was such a decent, honest, humble, talented driver and good friend... What an honor you guys have done this and we'll turn the FFR machine over to ticket selling. See you in the summer.

I've been trying to get people to buy raffle tickets. Whenever others talk about my car while at work I point out that they can have a shot at one similar to mine for 20 bucks. I even show them the ad in kit car builder mag. No takers yet.

I'd buy a ticket or 2 but I absolutely can't stand red.

You do NOT have to be present to win. But if you do win, you need to come pick it up. ;)

You all do a great job on my new MKIV. I will not be able to help with the build, but I will help by buying some tickets. Will the Roadster have the same front and rear bumpers?

Yes, we are getting the bumpers custom made to match the original.

It was around 1970. The car was retired from racing and Dick used to drive it around fresno. One day the CHP pulled him over for not having bumpers and was givien a ticket. The car still had the quickjacks on it. Fresno being really heavy into hot rods, Dick and a friend made these bumpers to avoid the fine.

The build week has started! I was only able to stop by for a little bit of time last night. Got to show off the progress to my Cub Scout Wolf Den, and also meet Mark Dougherty. Great Guy!

I hope some of the guys doing the build take better pictures than my phone could capture...but here goes.

Day 1 progress:

Front suspension is in (although Mark was saying the new spindles would need to be swapped out for SN95 due to fitment reasons with the deep dish pin drive set-up).

Fuel tank and filter are in.

Cockpit aluminum is all drilled, fitted, sealed and riveted in place.

Oh...and the body, is painted and waiting to be mounted. It looks nice!

I think all that my "boys" did was clean the dust off the chassis and aluminum, and learn the history of the original roadsters, Dick Smith's car, and Factory Five Racing! Not a bad education for 8 year olds!!!!

I just got back from working there tonight.

Engine, transmission, fuel system are in, and wiring is almost done. I was able to help contribute some and got the carpet finished (someone else got a good start on it), and the dash pad covering on the aluminum dash. The other guys got the IRS wrapped up (installed the missing half shaft). I think the steering is just about done now. The replacement SN95 spindles arrived with FFR adapters and they got those swapped out, but the adapter (strut bolts from mustang) were missing, so I think Frank is getting those in the morning.

Not much left to get it running. I hear Pete (PSB) is going to install the gauges and wire the dash tomorrow and the remaining items for the clutch slave cylinder are supposed to be here. Bill D. needs to get a battery and then Mark Dougherty wants to start the engine tomorrow!

Mark is also shooting to get the body installed sometime during the day tomorrow.

Very exciting, going together like a well oiled machine!

Holy mackerel you guys are fast! This brings the notion of a 'fast car' to a whole new level. I am secretly happy that my 'joy of biulding' wasn't over that fast. Looks like you are doing a super job.

Here's another bit of happiness: I am now a member instead of a junior member, after my 31st post. It's great to get rid of my training pants!

Here are those with the time lapse video from days 1-4 that OCCPete created. Pete says the car is running, body is on, and it's now 90% done.

I just found out a friend of mine's son has Cystic Fibrosis.I was telling him about the raffle and that's when he told me about his son.
Their son needs $6,000 a month in prescriptions to stay alive. The more money we can raise, the sooner the doctors can find a cure for this.

well guys
I'm home for a few days and just wanted to say how much fun it was working with the guys from OHIO. 5 days 20 different people, and not one bad word to say. we almost finished the car. The doors needed to be hung, a few things wired, and the dash installed. The Engine is great a real cross bolt 427 FE. tremic 5 speed, Irs , 15" Trigo wheels ETC. This car is AWSOME. Thanks some much for the invite to help on this build.
I can't wait for the show I already have my reservation for the hotel, and will be signed up soon for the show. My wife and 2 sons are planning to attend also.
See you there.
And Yes I have purchased a handful of raffle tickets also.

Mark,

The car is now pretty much finished. Eric and I finished the wiring and installed the dash on Sat evening - the indicator lights even fit in holes after we got the dash in. Bill and George hung the doors on Sun. Only things left are an alignment and to put the numbers on the side.

Good for her and nice to hear it was a local.
