Those are the requirements for Wisconsin, too. It was surprisingly easy to get a hand built car registered.

Wisconsin no longer requires that pictures accompany the paperwork.

It was mentioned to me that IL requires that the car be in final paint color to apply for title and license. You may want to ask other IL residence. However, if gel coat is the final color then you should be good.

I will check with the office next week about the paint.

Thanks.

I put red for color w no issues. That happens to be my plan for color as well but can’t imagine I go to jail if I decide to repaint it a different color down the road.

Took a couple weeks for the sos police to Contact me to place vin plate. Put mine on the 2x2 next to the door hinge. 300 Miles so far and making the list of mods and fixes. It’s a blast. Can’t wait for jms to get the tune lined out.

Congrats
Greg

Looks good, Martin! And, you did it in record time! (delivery to registration in 7 months or less?)

Well, well, well- it looks like we may be moving someplace warmer, Florida!
I had to call the IL office and withdraw my application. Will have to finish it down there

I called the office and they told me that the process will take 3-4 months to complete. If I am unable to complete it in IL, I need to start the title/registration over again in other state. I am afraid I don't have that much time :(

3-4 months??? Gotta luv IL. Glad I moved to Wisconsin 5 years ago.

...SO, I received a call from police officer today. He wants to come out this Friday to inspect the car. I was like, hmmm...let me check my schedule...HELL YEAH!!
COME OVER!

I am still in IL, pending move to FL. I figured since I paid the sales tax and associated fees, I might as well go for it.

Super excited.

Car looks great! I almost contacted you. I passed through Chicago on Monday and back on Tuesday enroute to Appleton, WI. I wish I would have now. You really pushed through your build fast.

It will likely be easier to register in FL with a transfer title than doing it from scratch. Make sure that you get it titled as a 1965, though, so you can qualify for any emissions, safety, or other exemptions. That also allows for antique plates in IL, but not sure about FL.

Good luck - I went through it 3.5 years ago and it was a cake walk.

Ha, this isn't a race I was just REALLY motivated :) I spent endless nights working on it.

Hi,
It seems fast, but I just put in a lot more hours in shorter time frame. There is no way around it :) you still have to put your time in, no matter how you slice it...

Be ready for a hefty first time registration fee when you register it in FL coming from IL. After the first year, it's the usual lower fee. (This is true for any vehicle registering here from out of state) No inspections here and they don't care about emissions.
What part of Florida are you headed?

Hi Mark,
I am moving to Jupiter.
Checking the FL DMV site, the fee is 225.00. At this point of the game, I don't really care :)

Florida is ultra easy. I got mine done, plates in hand in 45 minutes. My friend, got one done in 15!.

In Florida the car is registered as 65 and can wear antique plates, if that means anything to you.

By the way.... congrats on both fronts

1) Finishing your FFR and getting it titled and on the road; and

2) Moving out of Illinois.... Mrs. Gumball and I won't be far behind as we can't wait to get out of here!!!

My Mk1 was titled in Michigan as a 2002 Assembled Vehicle so that is what my title says now titled in FL. Not sure it can be changed once in the state, others may know better, but if it is possible to get it registered as a 1965 I'd do that.

You are exactly due East of me. Nice area.
After you get down and settled perhaps us FL FFR car owners can get together.

Hi Chris,
I am nowhere to be finished, just enough for inspection.
I still need couple cosmetic things and paint job by Jeff Kleiner this winter.

Plus any new ideas I get...

I am pretty sure that I put down 1965. Will double check tomorrow.

It's done! The officer came this morning, took couple pictures and drilled/riveted VIN plate in my PS box.

I was expecting that we would do some functional checking, lights, horn, safety...nope.

(it was raining and I ordered a hand windshield wiper from Amazon. Didn't even ask if I have one. I guess IL doesn't require one.)

Car is registered as 1965.

Now waiting 7-10 days to get the title and plates. :)
