View Full Version : Will SmugMug (Flickr) Kill Our Build Threads Like Photobucket Did?

I just received notice from Flickr that they are being acquired by SmugMug, a professional photo hosting service. Has anyone been able to find anything that says what SmugMug's plans are for third party hosting services currently being provided for no charge through Flickr?

I know the forum has a photo hosting feature, but it isn't as robust as other service, albeit it isn't likely to pull the rug out from under us anytime soon either.

I hope they don't screw it up. I have been on Flickr for several years now.

Robust? As in, "permanent", do you mean? I've always upload all my photos here to the native system rather than hosting elsewhere, but then all my photos are automatically backed up to dropbox by my phone anyway, so Ive never seen the need for a third party photo service. I suppose it's useful if you wanted joe public to see all your photos rather than the ones here?

Regardless, relying on a free service for anything is never going to last forever..

I echo RoadRacer's comment. I have always used the native system here on the FactoryFiveForum, and I have never had a problem with it. I realize this does not solve the problem of those that have used other services in the past (and sympathize with those affected). While I do not have answer to the original question, I would suggest that, going forward, you seriously consider using the native photo handling system built into the forum. It is easy to use and has never let me down. I can't speak to how "robust" other system are because I maintain full control of all my images on software and services that I control and pay for.

For myself, I went with what I knew already.
I've used Flickr many years before learning about Factory Five Roadsters. Therefore when it came time to post photos during my build, I've used what I've been comfortable with in the past.

I too hope that things don't change. My second build photos will be more helpful to others than my first build photos. ;)

Okay - I've migrated my entire set of build thread pictures over to the forum's photo hosting service. Because my original photos are too large, I ended up saving a copy from the posted images and then uploading the copy to the forum and updating all the BB code links. Now I just need to find an efficient way to size my future photos to work with the forum.

I use this free online picture resizer. https://bulk.webresizer.com/

i'm on a mac, but it's just a case of previewing the photos I want and tools/adjust size to 900 pixels wide.
