View Full Version : Must Have Kit Mods...?

I looked around but didn't see a thread like this. Out of all the great build threads on the forum, I thought it would be cool to put a 'must have' or 'necessary' mods thread together that people have done to their kits over the years, which would serve as a resource for new and existing owners.

Good idea, I am also interested in this and have been searching around the forum finding bits hear and there. I think it would be helpful to contain many ideas in one space and have not yet come across the place myself, though I figured it was out there somewhere. Some of the items I have come across are listed below but I am not an expert on any of this. These are not must haves but things that I see fairly commonly.
Cheap Amazon Seat Heaters
Hawk HPS brake pads
QA1 Coilovers
Heat/sound insolation along the lines of Lizard Skin
Expanded foot box
Nicer Carpet
Cobra or 13" 15+ IRS larger brakes
Trunk mod for a little extra space

Firewall Forward and Battery Box from FfMetal
Competition Dash - Not a single clue why FFR does not offer the Comp dash for the Mk4 S/C (semi competition) Roadster.
Turn Signal and Accelerator Pedal from Russ Thompson
Mechanical Throttle Kit from Fortes Parts
Here are my minimum mods:
1 - Any battery relocation kit.
2 - Separate brake reservoirs.
3 - Breeze radiator shroud.
4 - Boig Cool Tube kit.

These should keep you busy. Some of the results from Google. Best and quickest way to search on this (and the other) forum. From the Google prompt, enter exactly (without the quotes) "site:http://thefactoryfiveforum.com /kit mods". Replace "kit mods" with whatever search term you want for other results.

A real "must do" list is almost non-existent with a MKIV. But there are some nice to do items, which vary on personal taste and what you are going to do with the car.
Here is my list:
Russ Thompson turn signal and gas pedal.
Power steering
FFMetals battery box (weight in the rear where these cars need it)
Wilwood brakes - not must have for a cruiser, but I wouldn't build any other way.
Boig cooling tubes - very much a must have.
Fan shroud.
Trunk mod. I didn't do it during the build. But, I did it later so I could get my helmet in the trunk.
Heater / heated seats / wipers.

Front and rear bumper grommets from finish line

Having a MKII, I've made quite a few "mods" . . . being a MKII, I rounded the cockpit edges (not required anymore on the newer models) as the first mod. Did the "Drop-Butt" mod for looks (also not required on the newer models). After that, everything was mostly for comfort - quieted the pipes a bit, installed a glove box [for the wife], swapped to newer MKIV seats, installed fresh air vents, added power outlets in various spots around the car to facilitate cell phones, GPS, Etc., moved the hand brake to the left side of the drivers seat (the Fiero Mod). I've added sun visors, wind wings and relocated the rear view mirror to the top of the windshield (for better visibility), extended both the side mirrors farther outbound for the same reason. Extended the PS footbox and added a slope to the leading edge to get rid of my heel getting caught every time I exit the car.
Mechanical mods consist of: lower radiator support rod, relocation of battery to rear of drivers side wheel well, relocate fuse block to a drop-down panel, bump-steer kit (after determining that it was needed) , bigger brakes all around (13"F, 11.65"R), Breeze LCA bushing sleeves, Breeze Rack bushings, needle bearings on the spring mounts (allows springs to rotate freely).
Next on the list of "It'll never be done" mods is: front rad opening nose aluminum, upgrade shocks to something newer then my old Pro shocks, sway bars, 3-link brace (both parts) and a Bimini top for shade.

As Dave said, the mod you simply MUST do is multiple brake reservoirs. That way if your front/rear brake hydraulics fail, the rear/front brake hydraulics remain unaffected.
I will also add that the Russ Thompson gas pedal coupled to a mechanical linkage is SUPER nice. And since no one has yet mentioned a hydraulic clutch, I will :D.

Here in Colorado, we all had to install secret compartments for our drugs in the past. However, that was made legal a few years back and we don't need the secret copayments anymore.

These cars are never "complete" so I focused on the modifications that would be extremely difficult to do later, after built.
- Driver/Passenger footwell expansion.
- Trunk expansion
- Battery Box
- Hood hinges, pins are such a pain!
- FFR Spindles, don't screw around w/ donors or kits.
- Modified brake pedal, few do it ... But my manual brakes feel like power assist!

I vote, my turn signal system ;)
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?24625-DIY-SolidState-Arduino-Self-Canceling-Turn-Signals&highlight=Arduino
My list though...
- front battery
- 5 lug axles for better wheel & tires choices
- top of tunnel parking brake (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?25590-Miata-Parking-Brake)
- hood hinges

Must have mods to me means safety... one of the biggest is separate brake reservoirs. This could save your life. Every car should have this.
Next I would move the battery for shorter cables and easier access. The Breeze kit is really nice for this.
While I made the plan for my car, and while building, I tried to think Safety, Reliability, Convenience, Fun. So I have quite a few mods to meet these parameters. But the 2 above would be my biggies.

Many great mods mentioned already. In addition;
- If you're installing a Coyote, you need to invest in a set of 4x1x4 headers from Stainless Header (Thanks again Slider for your design on these headers)
- Also, if you're using a Coyote, you should invest in a mod program for the ECU. More commonly known as a tune.
- Herb makes some very nice door panels that others have copied. You know its a compliment when someone uses your ideas.
- The snapless tonneau cover from Kay and Phil works very well.
- Marine style cup holders in the transmission cover.
- Battery cut off switch.
- Drive shaft safety hoop.
- E brake cable routing mod.

His turn around time is pretty quick and he has done a few sales in the last year. I got mine during his 2017 Father's Day sale. If you don't need them right away, you may want to hold off until his next sale. They can be installed at any time and aren't needed during the build.

I had him do mine in my leather during his most recent sale. Had the panels back in less than 2 weeks, and he had a bunch to do. Just let him know what you want to do and he'll tell ya how many pieces he needs and what size. I wont be installing mine for another few months... but they look great!!

Re-contour the top of the doors (while in for body work and paint) to give 1.5 more inches of shoulder room (3 inches more cockpit space). Provides a roomy feel with much more comfort and looks like it was designed that way.

Thanks. I had the waterproof cover on the GoPro, so it didnt even really get the sound too well. It sounds much better in person. :)
I got my leather from The Leather Hide Store. Called Grey Paradise. Bought 1 full hide and it was more than enough. Allowed for 1 full screwup on the dash, then did the dash, switch panel, both door panels and the center console. Still have some left over to maybe make some more pockets, detail stuff, etc.
Secret side note... going to do the body stripes in the same color grey, only metallic... ;)

My 2 cents + questions
As I read thru all the build threads, I compiled my list of goodies I wanted to get as well:
1. Breeze: Battery Front & Lower radiator support kit & Fan Shroud
http://www.breezeautomotive.com/details.php?prod_id=518&cat_id=25#
http://www.breezeautomotive.com/details.php?prod_id=494&cat_id=17
http://www.breezeautomotive.com/details.php?prod_id=1117
? Question: Is the upper support required/good idea as well?
(maybe the Cockpit bulkhead trunk shelf too)
http://www.breezeautomotive.com/details.php?prod_id=861
2. Replica parts: Radiator Panel, trunk support
http://www.replicaparts.com/Roadster%20aluminum%20panel%20page.htm
http://www.replicaparts.com/new%20style%20trun%20support%20kit%20page.htm
3. Russ T: Trunk Kit (is the hoop conversion kit (http://www.norcal-cobras.com/store/russ_garage/mk3/mk3thc_installed.html) listed the right one to order, I have this pic and think it is called the drop box but cant find on his website)
https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=83568&d=1522818339
4. FFMetal: Thicker firewall
http://www.ffmetal.com/
? Question: As for the Triple CNC Reservoir Setup, I had planned to get from Forte's, but his site redesign made my link break. Anyone have a link to proper triple reservoirs?
Then there is the choice between a couple brands:
1. Koolmat from Breeze (pre-cut but pricey) vs Thermo-Tec and Jazzman's cardboard template method
2. Radiator pipes for Coyote from Boig or Breeze
Thx

After I ordered my kit, I called Breeze with my specs. He emailed me a list of "improvements" that would fit with my particular build and an explanation on each of why. Other than that, I ordered the drop trunk and turn signal from Russ Thompson, full LED lights from Watson's, and roll bar wedge kit from Tangent. This is not the cheapest way to go I'm sure but they are all forum sponsors and know what works.

I agree on front ********** grommets and tubes. The back FFR ones work just fine.
Since you guys are adding every accessory to the "Must have " list. Here are a couple I haven't seen yet:
Since I am an iced tea junkie. The drink, not the rapper..... cup holders in the trans tunnel.
USB charging ports. I have a double USB and a standard cigarette lighter style one in my under dash panel.
A chime for when you leave your headlights on. Easy to do, now that most peoples daily drivers have automatic lights.
I have a built in garage door opener and radar detector controls in my under dash panel.(with a super bright warning LED in the dash since I may not hear it)
Trunk carpet. This goes against my general "keep it lightweight", but I didn't want everything that I put in there sliding around and getting scratched.

Pay attention to the size of your cup holders. Most are too small in diameter to accommodate your cell phone, particularly if you have it in a protective case. I've got four sets of too-small cup holders (some of that's my fault, but honestly dimensional information is often lacking). These worked https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00911UX6A/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1.
Also it takes some careful planning to install them. You have to miss the 3/4" diagonal frame, and keep the depth shallow enough to not interfere with your transmission. You also want to be sure there's enough room under the dash for whatever cup you'll be using.

The larger Marine units are sized to fit a Koozie, then necks down for a regular sized cup. I like that since I usually have a water bottle in a Koozie to keep it cooler when in the blazing sun. Also, the marine units have a build in drain hole to take care of any messes.
I staggered mine behind the shift level, between the seats for easy reach.

If you install power steering (which I highly recommend) add a Heidts valve for assist control. Relatively easy during the build / install and gives you adjustable PS.
Also, when I ordered mine, FFR swapped a blank dash for the pre-drilled dash, no charge. I could locate my gauges and switches where ever I desired.
Also add a couple power-ports under the dash for phone-charger, GPS, radar detector, etc.

Where did you get the cup holders?
Ebay. Look up "poker table cup holders". The ones I got are plain black aluminum ones. You can get all different colors if that is your thing. I looked at several, including at West Marine (one too small, one too big, my cup would have gone flying). I picked my favorite cup (a Starbucks double insulated cup) and made sure it fit. A friend of mine ordered some fancy stainless double level, pad in the bottom with a drain etc. We could not make them fit. They were just too big.
I just ran downstairs and measured. Mine are 3 3/8" across the hole and 3" deep. They clear my TKO600 and the diagonal support in the tunnel.
Here's the cupholder that I got based on previous recommendation on another thread:

I like the looks of a tucked in / slightly under exhaust. Would likely want the heat shield for body/paint and skin protection.

Would those of you who have added the air vents in the foot boxes comment? Are they a nice addition or a necessity? My build will not have heater or air conditioner. I do plan to add seat heaters. I will also have dynamat or some thing similar. I don't think I am ready for the Lizard Skin application, but it is not totally out of the question.
Thanks for your opinions.

Footbox fresh air 100%. I recently did an upgrade on mine. I had the plastic blast gates that most people use. There were three things that I really disliked about them. 1. They did not feel good when you operated them. 2. there was too much throw for the pull cables which made the knob have to come too far out. 3. They started getting sticky after about a year. I changed out my nasty plastic blast gates for 3" exhaust cutouts and love them. Smooth operation and a short cable pull.
I personally think no heater is a mistake. I live in Florida and use mine quite a bit. I also have heated seats.
I used EZCool for insulation. It is a lightweight (what a Cobra is all about) insulator. I think noise reducing mats are a bit of wishful thinking with a sidepipe 2 ft from your ear. But you do want to reduce the heat.

- Modified brake pedal, few do it ... But my manual brakes feel like power assist!
What does this mean? I'm using manual brakes as well so any way to improve them would be great.

Only applicable to a donor pedal box so not a factor with the Wilwood pedals that will come with your complete kit.
