What is necessary to do this?. If my MK1 gets into a fender bender and needs a new body I believe the MK4 is the only option.

The Mk4 body will not bolt on to an older Mk1, 2, or Mk3 chassis. You can still get a replacement Mk3 body if you need one. The frames are too different for the Mk4 and older model bodies to be switched.
