View Full Version : Road Race floats for a Quick Fuel Carb?

I'm just finishing up my build and I'm planning to do an autocross event with the local club. I'm running a stock Quick Fuel carb (SS-650 AN) on 5.0. I understand some of the cars running a carburetor may have an issue with fuel starvation on hard corners. I'm wondering if I need to put "road race" floats in the carburetor to help prevent this. And if I do, does it impact the normal driving on the streets. I know, I should have gone with fuel injection........

I put them in mine w/ exactly the same carb and it runs great AX and street.

Yes - road race floats.

Jet extensions also help.

I consider the Holley Avenger vent tube a necessity too - mostly keeps it from flooding on hard braking.

I have a Q series, which has the jet extenders. I think it has road race floats, but not positive. Never had a starvation issue.

I haven't seen that vent extender, interesting. I did get a small header fire once in the shutdown area.

Is that what it is for?

Hmm if I’m going to be doing track days and autox, are these items a must?

not a must
BUT
they sure do help.
Without the above mentioned parts the carb will fload over, and want to stall under high G loads.

That's it exactly.

Also (probably) the black smoke at 3:15.

Also, if you're working on it probably ought to make sure you've got vent baffles / whistles installed:

Thanks everyone for the reply's. I've got a set of roadrace floats on the way. I would think the floats would need to be notched for jet extensions, so I'll need to research that some.

The vent tube mods make sense too, so I'm wondering if the tube shown above will fit on a Quick Fuel. Since Holley (actually High Performance Industries) now owns Quick Fuel I'll give them a call to discuss.

My first Autocross event is in May so I've got some to time to work this all out.

I have not really had any problems and only noticed slight hesitation on big sweepers at Pocono AutoX.

According to their site my SS 650 has •Race-ready with notched secondary floats and jet extensions

So are my current QF floats and vent tubes ok or should I look into "race" floats and that Holley Avenger tube listed above ?
