1200HP -- that'll get your attention. Now I hope FFR is going to make an NHRA legal cage for that truck or at least use chassis components that you could weld a cage to that would pass NHRA chassis cert. The 1.5" square tube used in the 33HR is not an NHRA compliant chassis member to weld a roll bar or cage to (2018 Sec-21 4:10) and these cars are just crying to be made into street / strip machines. With that much power we want to see that thing doing regular duty on the drag strip.

How about it FFR, you're an American company -- cross over from your European inspired road course comfort zone and dip a toe into the straight line acceleration game that was born in America back when hot rodding was young and wild. You've got the SCCA boys and girls covered with track-worthy models -- give us a kit we can assemble and go drag racing in without modifying your chassis to meet NHRA requirements. If Dodge can build drag racers in street clothing y'all can build a drag race-worthy hot rod kit be it truck or three-window coupe.

Currently, there are three major race trucks on the board for 2018. Customer Erik Treves is building a high-horsepower pro-street truck. Hot Rod Magazine's Mark Gearhart is going to give Erik a run for his money, and the crew here at Factory Five is building a NASCAR 900 HP drift truck for Joey Logano later this year. In the meantime, the crew here is building a production street truck with full fenders and Coyote power.

The truck projects mentioned above will not have a cage that would pass NHRA chassis cert. This will have to wait until truck production is in full gear and will likely be a fully custom project.

I hope this is associated with Hoonigan in Long Beach. I live just a few blocks away and every time I turn off the freeway exit off-ramp I peek into their lot. Always neat things in there.

Mark;
looks like a fun project, I will be following along and looking forward to seeing it at SEMA.

I love that you chose the same wheels I have been set on since I started my 33HR build. Being from KC I buy local when
I can and watching the 3 Weld boys race sprint cars in my youth I prefer to buy a product with their name on it.
The Black body and silver edges on those wheels follows the theme on my 3G Hemi dress-up parts so it all ties in.

It's not, building it in my garage though they will do a feature on it once it's done. It's Hot Rod Magazine project.

I've had Weld RT-S wheels on other cars and really like the fit and finish. This will be an 18x10 front and 20x11.5 rear.

Can someone move this to the projects sub forum? I accidentally posted it here.

My truck showed up Friday. Overall, looks considerably easier (sheet metal wise) than the Roadster/Challenge car. Missing a few boxes that I will wait for before I start. Already have the Wilwood 6/4 piston brakes with an extra set of rear calipers for the hydraulic E-brake, along with a Moser rear end. Wheels are supposed to ship this week.

Factory Five is building a NASCAR 900 HP drift truck for Joey Logano later this year.
I saw it last month when I was at FF.

The 1200HP twin turbo "The Drift Rod" article just came out in the latest HR mag edition (Aug), pg 74.
Anybody know the paint code for that Ford Liquid Blue? Would love to paint my 33 the same color.

There was no paint code released. Ford Custom Color.

The Production GT is actually Riviera Blue and RS is Nitrous/Nitrous Grip Blue. There's also Hugger. The closest color to liquid is probably Kona Blue....

Sorry I haven't been in here much, been busy with the day job and the Truck has been sitting for about a month since I got it.

Finally kicked off the Truck build Friday. The guys from Hot Rod came by my home garage and we wrenched on the Truck for about 8 hours. Our goal was to get it into a roller but didn't have caliper brackets and received two left, rear control arms - it was my fault for not checking that before hand. The entire front suspension, minus the calipers, is done. In about an hour's worth of work the rear end will be in and she will be a roller. After that, it will be sheet metal/fuel system time.

Here's the second story on "preparing for your Factory Five" - will have a front suspension story soon! - https://www.hotrod.com/articles/preparing-factory-five-delivery/

Mark Gearhart
07-17-2018, 06:15 PM
I wanted wider but there's not a lot of performance handling tires above a 325 in a 20-inch diameter. Pilot Sport Cups are available at $556/tire in a 345, but I am also sponsored by Toyo.

Yeah my Hot Rod is being targeted for the cruise and the look. I "might" take it down a 1/4 or 1/8 mile track a time or two but mostly it will be for driving.

Erik and Da Bat came over to help us on day 2 of the Truck build. It's now a full roller! We also got the pedal box and firewall sheet metal handled. Jeff will take the truck in 2-3 weeks to get the body panels sorted for paint them bring me back the roller. From there, I will install the motor/trans and get it to my fab guy to get the turbo manifolds built.

Sorry for the delay on updates here. I gave Da Bat the truck for about 1.5 months so he could get the panels square and get working on the body. I got the chassis back before thanksgiving and been busy with work and Christmas prep. My goal is to get the motor/trans in the truck in early Jan. After that, my fabricator will handle all the turbo plumbing and it will be game on after then.

Here's the front suspension story and I am almost done with the rear suspension story. - https://www.hotrod.com/articles/front-suspension-build-drift-rod/

A lot has been going on the last couple of weeks. Jeff Miller has sprayed out all the panels and is wet sanding/installing everything on the roller over the course of the week. I ended up going with Porsche Sapphire Metallic. It will then go to my fab guys for the custom headers/plumbing done. I should get it back in about 3 weeks and will mostly look like it should.

Twin turbo system taking shape. The positioning of the turbos has changed due to going with a hood. The inner structure wouldn't allow it to sit above the valve covers.

Mark, not sure you're going to like the exhaust dumping out just below the windows. And if I recall, you're in SoCal so you might want to check the vehicle code as CA used to have a restriction on side exhaust dumping between 2' and 11' that is probably still in effect.

Cool project!

For those unfortunate souls still residing in the People's Republik of Kalifornia under their draconian laws, this link to the looney tune vehicle code will be enlightening or disturbing -- either way, it's informative. I only remember some of these stupid laws as I had to study them extensively at the Police Academy and after 27-years some still remain in my cerebral filing system. I'm so happy I no longer have to deal with these insane regulations -- I now live in the free State of Arizona.

Interesting, never new that existed. If it becomes an issue, we can cut that elbow out and point it at a down angle. I liked it like this first so I will try it out.

I planned on getting a cone insert as "muffler" and seeing if I can get it to pass exhaust dB certification. Turbos really help quiet down the exhaust. It would be something good to have on hand if I got pulled over.

Not to stir up a *&$%pot here, but I'm curious to know which of those regulations you find onerous? I've honestly never thought to myself "damn, I wish I could put whistle tips on my car!" or "you know what we need around here?... more Harleys with straight pipes!". I grew up in the SF bay area and I remember the smog being so bad most of the year when I was a kid that they wouldn't let us out onto the playground for lunch. Nowadays we get maybe 3-4 'spare the air' days every summer. I love classic cars and motorcycles and yes the regulations are restrictive compared to other states but on the whole, they do exactly what they were meant to do which is to improve air quality and cut down on obnoxiously loud vehicles. Yes, I know some people think this infringes on their rights but I'm failing to grasp why people think they have the right to be a-holes at all hours of the day and night.

Wow.....I bet you are fun at parties.

John, unless you were a member of the legislature that enacted some of these goofy laws you shouldn’t take it personal. I certainly don’t hold you responsible for what your government does. Americans have a long history of criticizing the government. It actually started before this nation was born. And the CA Legislature is such an easy target.

To give some contrast, look at what it takes to get a kit car registered in your State vs. across the river in AZ. I spent a total of an hour at the MVD (DMV to you) getting my vehicle inspection, VIN number assigned and attached to the car, title, registration, & license plate. My title (Pink Slip to you) shows my car was first sold in 1933 – yep, it’s viewed by the State as a 1933 Ford and no smog controls required. But unlike where you live, we have clean clear air.

John, it sounds like you’re happy living under the structure of strict control and everyone deserves to be happy. But lashing out at Harley riders – wow John. When I think of Harley-Davidson I think of America

Mark, I’m currently using the perforated cones and six perforated discs for mufflers. The discs I fabricated along with the mounting points that allow adding or subtracting discs as needed. The cones weren’t enough for my N/A engine but may be enough for you with the turbos. I’ve calculated the total opening of mine and it equates to a 3” diameter open pipe and give me very little restriction and results in 84 db at 2000 RPM measured at 50’. These make a very clean looking exhaust.

Mark Gearhart

I literally only want to run something that appears to be a muffler in the tips that's held in by a set screw, and that's only if I run into issues with law enforcement. I have found that cops usually steer clear of cars that even look pre-65 due to convoluted SMOG laws here. Late model car with an exhaust like this? For sure pulled over day one.

If a vehicle isn't identified in the certification book for testing RPM, then you're given a 3 dB cushion to pass. So, if I say my engine has a rev limit of 6,800 rpm and they test at 3,400 rpm, I just need to come in at 98 dB or less. I know the cone filters are only good for 2-3 dB, but it would be mainly there for show.

Where did you place the PCM and fuse box?

Haven't got to wiring yet but I am going to make a large electronics panel to mount off the side of the pedal box and run length wise behind the dash. There's a ton of room behind there. Right now I am just concentrating on getting the Truck "SEMA ready", which places wiring pretty far back on the priority list.
