Anyone in VA that has purchased a partially completed car and successfully registered/titled in VA after completing it? Contemplating going this route but VA appears to be a little strict based on forum posts and don't want to pull the trigger if it's not possible or going to be a complete nightmare.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Which car are you planning on buying? The replicas (cobra, 33, daytona coupe) may have a different titling process than the 818 for instance, since it is a unique design.

In general the process is:
1. Get the car titled, pay taxes
2. Pass safety inspection
3. Pass emissions (replicas of the older cars may be exempt, I can't speak for those)

The biggest and most time consuming hurdle is getting titled. This will likely involve a trip to the DMV HQ in Richmond. You will need receipts for all of the major parts you purchased (engine, trans, etc.), FFR kit and associated parts, MCO for the FFR chassis, etc. A donor vehicle title could be used to prove ownership of the donor parts. This will all be used to ***** the value of the finished car for taxes. In order to register, you will also need insurance.

Thanks, STiPWRD. Appreciate the info and links. The car is a 33 and my main question is around whether there will be any issues with the MCO and major build receipts having someone else's name on them.

I'm not certain but I don't think that should be a major problem, especially if you have a bill of sale stating transfer of ownership to you. The DMV's main concern is having a paper trail for all of the purchased parts so they can determine the value of the vehicle and prove you haven't stolen the parts. Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck!

That makes sense and appreciate the follow-up.
