Hi all, i have a tranny leak at the speed sensor, i bought a new sensor and when i removed the old one i noticed there is a seal where the old speedo cable went in, should there be something in the opening to keep it from leaking or is there another seal further in that has gone bad?
Thanks
Walt

There are two versions of the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). One that uses an actual physical speedo cable, and one that doesn't. If you don't have a speedo cable (most don't any more) then you should be using the VSS that's made with the end closed. Unfortunately Factory Five is still including the cable version with their kits. Search for Standard Motor Products SC37. Looks like this:

Some guys try to plug the cable connection hole with RTV or whatever. Some successfully, some not. The right part is a little over $20 - $25 depending on where you buy it. Not worth messing with IMO, especially considering the price (and inconvenience) of potentially losing transmission fluid. The new sensor doesn't come with the gear and retaining clip, but you should be able to re-use the ones from your existing sensor.

I didn't stay at Holiday Inn. But used to work in the plant where those were made. Was originally designed and produced by Kelsey-Hayes in Michigan. They sold the entire design and production line to the company I worked at. We moved the line to Indiana and made millions of them. Literally. They were standard issue on all Ford products for a number of years. The removal of the physical speedo cable was about in the middle of the life cycle. When they were no longer on current production cars, and only service parts, everything was sold again to Standard Motor Products. Looks like they're still at it.

Yup. Again though, I'm assuming you don't have an actual speedo cable. Only the 2-wire harness that plugs in.
