View Full Version : Banning People From the Site

I want to discuss the subject of people who have to be banned. One of the moderators recvd a email from someone sorta throwing down the gauntlet and saying, if I get banned, I'll be back in another form anyway..

I love the fact that I am so new to stuff like this. If I refer back to the charter, COMMUNITY first. The charter of this forum, and that accepted by the moderators at my request, was to build the community. All of us have an obligation to do this in an honest and forthright manner. The whole concept of banning someone is unsettling to me, but not as unsettling as a person who seeks out conflict and enjoys the process.

A long time ago I read a Harvard Business Review Case Study that identified four types of people (customers). I have found this article invaluable and wholly true over the years. Here are the four profiles...

1. The Average Joe: That's most of us. We are happy and reasonable. We get annoyed like anyone and we enjoy the journey.
2. The Apostle: or was it "The Saint". A guy who loves an idea, concept, company. Harley Fan with tatoo, etc. These guys lead the community and when I look at FFR we are lucky to have a huge percentage of these guys in the community... we've got more than customers of the slap-chop.
3. The Mercenary: This guy is all about price. Loyalty, made in china, nothing matters but getting a price or getting something free.
4. The Terrorist: This was written before 911 so apologies for the reference. Anyway, a Terrorist in this profile was described as a person who enjoys conflict. We all know these types, and while there are not many of them out there, it seems they are always arguing with someone or finding a way to cause grief.

The email sounded strangely confrontationalist, but no-one should pre-judge anyone, and I feel previous conduct on another site is no reason for negative action on this site. All are welcome to the new community. I think that the jobs of the moderators are to keep the charter clear. A forum is just a music hall. The participants bring all the music and entertainment. If the music hall is dark and dangerous and unfriendly, or if a few people make it not fun, then the moderators owe it to the community to ask some patrons to leave.

In my world, all are welcomed with a warm handshake and friends until they act different. None of us are more important than the community, and I'm one of those crazy guys who actually believe that folks should be accountable for what they do and say. The group of moderators on this site were selected because they are all really kind, professional, knowledgable nice people, the kind of people you want to call up on a friday night for beers. The kind of people I am honored to call friends. A person would have to TRY to run afoul of these great folks!

I will take off my modesty hat for one second here. Factory Five has become the great company that it is for many reasons, but one of the biggest ones is that I HAMMER constantly on the team to remember every second that the guy who walks thru the front door is the boss. Here on this exciting new forum, I want all of us to remember that service, humility, kindness... these are the path to the Force. Arrogance, Pride, Deceit, Fear... These things lead to the dark side.

Thats what I think.

Dave:

I like your philosophy, but I must believe that as an employer you are also aware of the "other" business "rule" wherein 5% of the group causes 95% of the problems. We must all remember that when dealing with a group of individuals there are always going to be problems, but what is really important is how the leadership deals with them.

I wish you and the moderators patience, wisdom and good judgement.

David Smith,
Well said.
You have a way with words and that is because you have a good heart, full of love for family, fellow man, country, and God.
I greatly respect you and the great community that you have created.
It is an honor to help in a small way.

Dave,
That may happen from time to time. It only takes a few to stir the pot.
The farther topics get from cars, the more likely someone will cross the line.

Best wishes to you and your team, hope this forum doesn't become a drain on your resources and you have to spend too much time babysitting. :)

Dave,

Thanks for your words of wisdom. I, too, would like this to be a family-oriented community of those who love these cars and the relationships built with countless other folks who share this common passion. If I want to argue politics or religion or see soft porn, I would seek another forum or call in to "talk radio." I guess the real challenge of a "forum" is to keep it true to its roots and not succumb to naysayers or those who want it to be something else.

Thanks for the thoughts Dave. By the sound of your email I think most of us can guess who it was from, and he has been banned many times over on Bill's old forum. While you are in this business to sell a product, nobody has to, or wants to continually put up with that type of personality.

You've only been online 24hrs and you've already got people starting conflicts about possible bannings and issuing threats about coming back under proxy servers, lol, that didn't take very long?

Can you be two??? I consider myself part Mercenary and part Saint. I love a great price but I am loyal to the product (FFR) to the core. I do ask about Military discounts, because I want to give my business to someone who cares about us Military Boys, but sometimes that still doesnt make it the lowest price. I have picked a engine builder....not the cheepest, but has gone out of his way to help me out for being in the Army (Forte). By the way, being over here is like a kid that finds his go-kart in the garage 8 months before Christmas!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Dave: I am forever indebted to you for personally talking me into ordering a MKIII kit way back in 2006. The people I have been fortunate enough to meet, as well as all those who helped me with advice on this other forum, have really been a huge help to me. Thank you all for whatever part you had in my adventure of building my own MKIII Roadster. What a blast to drive. I hope and pray that this forum will be even better than the last one. I understand that it is the job of the moderators to police this site, I know a few of them, and I am confident they will do a great job for you and all of us.
Thanks again for a fantastic kit car that is the absolute best in the World. Larry

Dave,

While I'm still saving my milk money to realize this dream (made the decision to go with FFR in 2007) it's these small insights into this company and your philosiphy in how you operate this business that only cement this decision for me. Thanks for being up front with all of us. Thanks for this site and for your candor. When that 5% is causing you to tear your hair out, please remember that the other 95% quietly has your back.

I have this on my wall right in front of my computer at work... it goes like this,

A Customer
is the most important person in any business

A Customer
is not dependent on us, we are dependent on them

A Customer
does us a favor when he calls, we are not doing him a favor by serving him

A Customer
Is part of our business, not an outsider

A Customer
Is not a cold statistic, he is a flesh and blood human being with feelings and emotions like our own

A Customer
is a person who brings us his wants, it is our job to fill those wants

A Customer
is deserving of the most courteous and attentive treatment we can give him

A Customer
is the liveblood of this and every other business

I don't know what it has to do with this thread, but I kinda like it.

Thanks,
I liked it so much, I modified it a bit to fit our practice and hung up 15 copies throughout the office. Very nice indeed.

Couldn't agree more. When a company forgets this the are either going downhill fast, or they are a utility or government agency.

A perfect example of Daves philosophy of giving guys a break at work...

There was a member on at the other place... he was quite a trouble maker and banned many times.

Over here, he's been great and brings lots to the table as far as tech and help and has been cool and a great contributor.(you know who you are :D) Thanks man!

Yep, second chances and clean starts! COMMUNITY.

Speaking of which, I've only mod'ed ONE post in over a month, and the guy who's post I edited quickly apologized. A great start to what I know is going to be a great resource for FFR builders!

:)
