A proper pro street setup requires a narrowed rear end and chassis and wheel tubs. A 9 inch Ford rear end is a lot better choice and readily available from many sources. Art Morrison sells ready made pro street rear clips.

Lol.... dangerous I know.... but so much fun.... wait is that ok? ...
As far as narrowing rear end... I need to stay stock width else the frame will also need mod'ing... my 289 had a 5 inch total width narrow without any I'll effects... 8.8 are very strong if set up right.

2. A little - honestly not that much.... I am big time nap guy though :)
3. Honestly just plan my day a few days out and have been disciplined enough never to divert from the plan...it's a game of efficiency with me... actually it was an informal game Wayne and I use to play.... I quit cause he's way faster....but for example a quality snap-on ratchet can take a diff cover off in about 5-8 minutes... while my electric impact will do it in less than a minute...what did I do with the other 7 minutes.... used the same impact to strip the rest of the rear end.... :)

Erik W. Treves
03-11-2018, 12:42 PM
Nothing really to update... the truck has not yet arrived... been driving the crap out of the Coupe... bought a new welder and have been restocking and cleaning the garage. Stopped by my powder coater to arrange getting my chassis done... not going with black... and since I will be tubing the rear and some other mods... no need to stay with black chassis.... also discussed color combinations with Wayne Presley... most of all the planning and coordination is done... so hopefully I should be moving quickly one or gets here... SEMA will be here before I know it...so I am starting to feel the pressure...lol

ALRIGHT>.... no more waiting!!!
THe Stewart truck FINALLY showed up... 30+ days late.. anyway.. got it unloaded and got right to work..
The packaging once again was great! B/O's were present but nothing we can't work past while we wait. Quickly unpacked the suspension components and got to work making the rear suspension for the custom 4- link. Threw the front on and started fitting the body panels so I get the fenders on to measure for the drag wheels and tires.... once it is down on the ground it will go off to paint... once the bodywork is done... I will start the build at full speed while the painter is doin his thing.
all together about 1/2 a day on the truck then pictures for you all and an update to the boys at FFR....time to watch some hockey and plan my next moves.

Got the cab trimmed up so I could get the firewall on... which moved the cab back some (which it needed).... then decided to look at the bed side now that cab is about where it needs to go.... only about an hour on it today...had to get some tips from Captain Ron...looks like I have what I need to make some progress the next couple few days .. this weekend should be cracking I think...hope to have most of the panels on.... we shall see....

I did not trim firewall.. it should go on without trimming. You do have to trim the cab however to get it far enough back
Erik W. Treves
05-03-2018, 05:43 PM
Got about 45 minutes on it yesterday to start the mockup on the rear legs of the roll cage... this working through the design and how much "tub" I will need to get these tires in the rear...
Getting ready to trim some fiberglass tonight to get the panel gapped.... this weekend hope to have the engine in so mockup of the scoop can begin... and then start welding in the bars.... should be a "busy weekend"....
anyway... something like this...

Sorry that's what I meant to say. Is it the opening size or a flange issue? What exactly needed to be trimmed? Just curious as I get mine next week.

Erik W. Treves
05-03-2018, 08:45 PM
It will be obvious. The body will need to trimmed around the side bars to allow the cab to shift back so the firewall will lay in there correctly. I wanna say I trimmed off about 1/4 inch... but that will depend on how much they leave for you. If you look at post 49.... I didn't wipe off the fiberglass dust in the area of the body that needed to get cut.... it looks like I messed with the firewall... but that dust came off the body
Dan Babb
05-04-2018, 01:47 PM
Are the rear legs for the roll-bar going to bolt in like the Cobra or be fully welded?
I assume bolt-in because how else would you get the cab off & on the frame after it's welded in place.
Will it be effective as a bolt-in section or more for show?
Erik W. Treves
05-04-2018, 03:51 PM
Yes.. bolt in like the cobra ... I am connecting into corner of the cab bars so it will be very functional
Erik W. Treves
05-05-2018, 04:56 PM
A few cool things got done today.... got my rear roll bars installed and they actually went in even the first time! Measured for like an hour... but hit the angles within a 1/4 degree. THe driver's side is completely in with a bolt in mount... the pass side is mostly in... have to finish the bolt in mount and trim the of the fiberglass around the bar... I like how it changes the look of the truck a bit...
also test fit the engine.. the stock pan from ford racing does not work... so I will have to call wayne to hook me up with some VeryCoolParts oil pan... anyway... it's in there for now.. glad I found out now.

Engine looks good in there!
I like the roll bars as well; I'm glad FFR decided to add them to the trucks. Is that interior bracing on the bars your work, or stock?
Do you plan on dressing up the bars where they exit the cab, or just leave them raw steel? I am looking forward to following along with this build, like all the others. I have always enjoyed what you do, and how you do it. I am sure this will be no different!

Erik W. Treves
05-06-2018, 04:19 PM
Steve... the rear bars are "me" ... they don't come with the kit. I plan on powdercoating them the same color of the frame when I get that done. The holes in the body will get an an o-ring gasket for a sealed finished look. The interior roll cage is stock from FFR
The doors for the garage are just done with some stuff I bought at Lowe's

As I wait for another infusion of parts from FFR - figured I could finally finish weld my rear roll bar... I the issue was it needs to be removable... well after a crap load of measuring and having to re-weld the "x" 4 times because the close tolerance connectors would not allow any deformation after welding... The first go around with the TIG was a mess... nothing lined up... so I ended up MIG'ing it while it was all bolted together...should clean up fine I think.. looks like it is moving just sitting there.

Eric,
Have you started the sheet metal floors yet?
Erik W. Treves
06-05-2018, 06:49 AM
Sheetmetal floors? The aluminum pieces are in there but I won't be doing any real assy inside or with the motor until after I get the chassis back when the body man is done with it.
I haven't posted for a bit while I went on vacation back home to Boston.... of course I went back to the "mothership" to see the boys... Sat down with them and discussed what I have seen and run into during the build... also discovered several changes and updates...they were nice enough bring my kit up to date... thanks!
Got back the other day and with the new parts and pieces I was able to get a lot done yesterday... I also took 3 more days off from work to help get myself back on track.
The biggest issue I was trying to resolve on how to get all the panels to stay fixed in place - but able to take off quickly - but also be able to be installed in a very repeatable position.. THis is important since it will ensure that when the painter is taking panels off and on he doesn't waste time ($$$$) trying to fix everything while he adjusting gaps - and should make everything line right up when the Chassis and Body come back together for final assy.
So last night I finished the whole front of the truck to include the hood hinge is now 100% installed and functional. - I will be moving on to the back of the truck today and then hopefully the doors tomorrow.
THe biggest thing to pay attention to if you are doing fenders - are to ensure the running boards are placed "correctly" and are even.. the rear fenders have some flex to them so you can change narrow or open the wheel opening and change the look of the truck a bit... You also don't want the fenders sticking out beyond the bed (at least I didn't)… It is all connected and to ensure the front fender lands up against the radiator surround and EVEN take some patients! My running boards were about 1/4-1/2 inch off and it messed up the entire front end!
So once I got that all done and remounted - basically the entire day.... I PUT RIVNUTS ON EVERY PANEL.... LOL! This should lock everything down and take away the variability and make removing and installing panels way easier!
So it doesn't look like much... but the front is ready to go to paint!

Back at again full steam ahead... didn't get as much done I wanted... but it's progress..
Tailgate is now on and functioning...make SURE you start at the back of the Truck when doing the panels!! I had my bed sides too far forward so when I put the rear roll pan on it hit the driver's side gas tank strap mount... and since that would require me to re do all the fitting I did to the front of the truck.... yep.... cut that dude off... I will make a custom mount..lol..
Got the bed floor in and modified it for the wheel tubs and the roll bar legs... came out pretty good I think.
Tomorrow... DOORS! … this should be fun

In your opinion, you do not have to have the weight of the truck on the wheels and suspension to fit all the panels. The frame should not move, or flex, so you feel comfortable with this procedure? The engine is in, and that is probably necessary.
Hopefully will have mine in 3 weeks.
Keep up the good comments.

your concern is not warranted.. the suspension and engine will not effect the panels at all. As with all FFR cars the body is a "shell" and not loaded.. The Chassis is soooo stiff that there will be more movement from opening and closing the doors than the chassis causing any issue to the body. The engine is only in so I can fit the air scoop... otherwise I would have not placed it in there. It just isn't a thing...no worries.
other news... spent ALL day doing one door...let just say I sure wish I had "beta" directions.... lol... actually Jim and Tony have been great! and have come to the rescue more than a time or 2... so you will have to wait until the week for at least 1 door shot...good news... 2nd door should technically be easier!

Pretty good weekend all around... got both doors mounted and functioning... Tail gate is all in and chain/hooks installed.... I did run into an issue with the tail gate U-bolts and the bed side pockets... they kinda occupy the same space... I ended up notching the pockets... so it all works...
Also welded the wheel tubs and installed the dash and drilled for gauges … wash off the truck.. I have 1 or 2 things to get done and then she's off to paint.

Eric, your front tires look real close to the fenders. Maybe optical illusion. What size are wheels and tires, or are they temporary?
Or, is it your front shocks/springs are not adjusted yet?
Keep up the great posts.

So these are shop wheels and tires off a jeep... the truck needs 26 diameter tires... these are WAY bigger... won't be an issue with the correct size tires and ride height set

Working through the week on it after work trying to get it done!!
Important tip... when you are installing the windows and the door latches are installed... make sure you don't close both doors with the windows up!!! lol.... had to climb through the front windshield opening to open the doors..
anyway... both windows in … door handles in... need to trim for window seals now...

FOr the handles... FFR provides a template for installation... I ended up using another measurement since the edge of the door will change after body work ( the door gaps are way roughed in).... ended up perfect... 29 .5 inches from the top hinge - check it out.

Another weekend done... coming right along.... really close to getting it started and finishing up the complete roller.... Driver's side floor is all in and rear waterfall … more wiring complete, exhaust has been completely re-done since the 2 inch exhaust was not up to the task.. so 2 1/2 custom pipe all done... had to redo the AC unit and tunnel since they seemed to occupy the same spot.... so notched the tranny cover and moved the AC unit a little... should work great.... more parts needed really to get much else done... so I have ordered what I think is the balance of parts needed to get this done.... hopefully in the next 2 weeks... she should be close to finished....

Lots of progress this weekend... next weekend it should be quite a bit louder at my house with the first start.... All that is left is :
1. put fluids in
2. bleed brakes
3. Install Radiator
4. install 2 chassis grounds
in the last 2 days - I got the heater lines installed, NOS kit installed, floors in, shifter in, dizzy installed, made spark plug wires, horns installed and ran front harness, installed belt and routed AC lines (need to buy crimper). As I type it it is a lot of little work but to look at not much has changed in the big picture...

with regard to the 29.5" measurement you used for the door latch, did you just hold the tape measure against the hinge? and is 29.5" to the first screw hole, or the center of the handle template?

Just put the template on the edge of the door up against the belt line. The square edge goes against the edge of the door. I would fit the door before cutting the holes for the handle.
Why do you need a measurement?
Erik W. Treves

So my OCD... if you do it that way and then you do the gaps on the door... I had to sand down the latch side on both...ultimately depending on how much "gap" you leave before the body guys does his thing... you could end up with one handle closer to the edge.. where if you measure it from the front of the door at the hinge... that point will never change relative to any gaps that get trimmed.... probably over thinking it... but I am also the guy running from one side of the car to other trying to see both side at the same time :)

Well..... IT'S ALIVE....
THe video is like the 4th start... first actual start didn't go... I had wired up the EFI to a Accessory Circuit so the ECU and Coil lost power during crank. Then I didn't put enough gas in..... ultimately it did fire right up... sounds wicked mean.... Wifey came out and said it looks "bad a$$" … kinda surprised me cause she is normally pretty reserved about the cars...
anyway.. have to finish up the radiator so I can get some water in it and let it run for more than a few seconds at a time... then bleed the brakes, connect the drive shaft and I am ready for the body for final assy....

Erik,
I had picked up a mustang differential for my cobra build but went instead with the IRS. I still have the differential from a 98' Mustang, GT, 8.8 rear end. Would this work in a 35 Hot Rod truck?

Looks really good! It looks sharp even without the running boards so they'll add a nice touch to the look.
Any plans to paint the butterfly blades on the intake too? Matching the body paint might be an option.
that's why they are not installed in the pic... they are getting painted body color.... :)

You would have to build a custom 4-link for it like I did....the 3-link 8.8 will not work and the 4 link is too short

Round 2 down at Wayne's … got all the rest of the parts form the painter and was able to really get some progress made... a few things left to do and then get the glass in it...

hood scoop 2.0
here are some Hood 2.0 pics... The Air Scoop seems to drive people away... so... if you pull it off I went ahead and found a "hood scoop" that be bolted "pinched" on the hood to allow for two different looks on the same truck..takes about 20 minutes to swap it out.

Eric, what did you use for your running board protection strips, and how did you attach them.
Your truck is my inspiration.
Thanks, Ralph

Beautiful build, congrats. If you don't mind me asking, in the end, how does the truck ride with the 4 link? I'm looking to run wider wheels similar to what you have and already have a '94 rear end I can use. I don't mind doing the fab work but I am wondering how the ride would be with a narrowed SN95 3 link versus your setup. Have you had the opportunity to ride in each type?
Thanks

Erik
Just wondering did you change to 4 Link for tire clearance or was there another reason. Planning on building a 35 and planning on Tubbing it Maybe
