Being my battery is in the trunk, I can hook the light up to a separate 12 volt source, correct? Light doesn't long enough leads

Yes. Any constant 12v source will do.

I have a one-wire alternator that is connected directly to the positive terminal on the battery (the battery is mounted in the rear). I hook my timing light positive lead to the output terminal on the alternator and the negative lead to a good ground.

I just hook the hot lead for my timing light up to alternator output.

Or a positive terminal block, or on the batt side of a solenoid. But a separate batt works too.
