Yes they do, and he is entitled to his but at least he could be nice about it. BTW I like the winning design, not the one I picked as a favorite but it is still a nice design IMO.

and really how many yuppies do see driving Miatas?
I see mostly older guys trying to relive their golden MG days, women who bought them because they're cute cars (this accounts for the auotmatics), and young guys who want a cheap sports car with alot of potential.

It's interesting to see how many people didn't like the winning design. I really hope FFR will do a "People's choice" so we can see what people actually wanted built.
I have to admit, I don't like the winner either.

I have absolutely nothing against stating an opinion, and backing it up with either empirical or at least subjective evidence. But just dropping in, unleashing a provocative statement and then disappearing again reeks of this:

I'm inclined to close this thread, and will do so if this guy doesn't at least say SOMETHING to back up his FIRST post...
Yeah, I'm a little irritated, sorry.

not trying to be argumentative here but...
what kind of "subjective evidence" would you need to back up an opinion on styling? after all, an opinion on styling is purely subjective...personally, I don't care for the judges top pick either (at least not in the originally presented form).

I liked all the top entries.
It would have been nice to see a video of the judges discussing the entries and explaining why they liked them and what the good points of each one were; having some meaningful discussion. I'm sure it wasn't easy and I'd like to know how experts saw things.

You h=guys will have a chance to be hugely involved as the designs get made into some very large 1/4 scale models. Right now I am working on the budget to do more cars than less and to extremely precise scale dimensions to anticipate reality and exclude freakish fantasy lines.

Now this is something that I also want to see? its one thing to pick a design but another deal to see or hear the "why" behind the pick. I really look forward to the peoples choice thread and if someone doesnt then I will start a "buyers choice" thread. I think that its one thing to have an opinion but a whole other deal to be a keen and prospective buyer.
Surely that would count for more than just some 13 year old that likes the look of something!
Just a humble suggested note to Dave Smith and the team ;~)

I like your idea. Alot of the judges submitted briefs with their selections. IF I can scrabble enough time together, along with the significant 50-125 submissions in a gallery, I think this judges criteria and discussion would be fun. I am looking ahead to the next milestone of having a car at SEMA this year in November so time is a critical factor. Also I DO want to turn some of the design direction over to the community in the form of some models. More on that. Good suggestion on the review and reasons.

May I suggest a dedicated 818 open house before SEMA, or making the 818 the focus of the traditional winter open house? I made a 300-mile roundtrip for the June open house just to see the factory and the 818 chassis, and I would come up again in heartbeat to see and discuss the body. I understand pulling together something like that may be difficult with the development timeframe, though.

I agree with you..In my opinion they passed over a lot of designs that I thought were a lot better..I am not thrilled with the first three at all. However I don't see 1st places resembalance to a miata..
However it does look like it's broken in the middle.
i see my comments have started somthing, well then lets look at it from the consumer's side you have a very nice idea of priceing a kit car reasonable for people to take to the track, but i say this as nice as i can who will be buying this car (you) no people like me who like kit cars who are obviously mechanically inclined and if i where looking for something to just take to the track i could (but never will) buy a miata and do one of the kits to change it to some type of v8 for like 4 grand but the fact is i do like kit cars and your gtm is awsome but the body style of the 818 looks like some type of ricer miata sorry if you really like it i think you could have done a way better job picking the over all winner and dave if you wanna pick my brain pm me and ill give you my number (im a fire fighter and will be on duty for a week so ill get back to you then)

Actually you made a rash comment with zero insight behind it and then others came up with some useful suggestions.
If you can find time when your on leave I suggest you read the information about the 818. basically you will see that the #1 pick was the judges choice and that after this it was made clear by Dave Smith that they were making 3 different body shapes on the same swatch style chassis setup.
Dave has indicated that its likely the no#3 choice below would be made and others also.

Also with your tone on here I wouldn't be expecting Dave to PM you for design advise. Especially when it is based on an unsubstantial and misinformed critique.

This electric concept car by Exagon, to me has a lot of similarities to the winning design. In my opinion, that's a very good thing. I find this car crazy sexy, and I expect the final product from Factory5 to be so as well.

Gloveman, not wanting to start a fight here, but, I hear the same thing from others in my line of work. "The Boss only wants to hear the good stuff." The reality is that the boss has his ideas and openly accepts challenges to his ideas if they are thought out and presented with good backup to support the case. I believe the same is done here. Many ideas posted here are challenged every day, but, they are done so with good evidence or at least a discussion from the point of view of the challenger. I believe that David does a fantastic job of overseeing this playground. He just doesn't want people to stirring up junk without some thoughtful reasoning behind it. I am glad you are on here though. New people can bring in a bunch of fresh ideas. :)

NicksPapaw,
With the help of Administrators, we are generally self-policing. What Dave does well is to deflate controversy without getting tangled in it. All good leaders will have this quality.
What I want to point out is that trolls are not interested in a rational conversation. They don't want to learn; in fact they usually don't even care about the subject. It's the conflict they enjoy.
Do not feed trolls. It's not just a slogan.

sorry, but this car still looks too bulky to me to be using a mid engined boxer style engine. What's the point of using a nice compact and relatively flat (if N/A or using a relocated intercooler) drivetrain layout if you're going to stick it in a car that looks like it could handle a front engine layout and be a 2+2?
now if you want to just swap the complete Subaru AWD system into a body like this, then I'd be all over it :D

I think the problem you have with this car is the same problem a lot of people, myself included had with the winning design. Too big, too bulky for a low, racy midengine roadster.

of course I'm still looking at the 818 as an entry level sporty weekend toy, rather than an all weather DD as some others appear to want it to be

You mean others like Dave Smith? One of the three designs he wants to create is a high mileage DD. I think your weekend toy need might be able to be addressed by either of the other two, depending how hardcore you want your toy.

I think the funniest thing about this thread is that everyone is arguing about a car that doesn't even exist yet. I will go grab some popcorn while we wait for the models to be presented. BOY OH BOY, the feathers will fly then! I absolutely guarantee you that not everyone will like what will be presented. Heck, there are cars on the market today that sell well and I think to myself, why would anyone be caught dead in a crappy ride like that. But, they sell. And really, isn't that the point?

I'm really starting to like those concept cars with clear plastic or synthetic fabric coverings over a apparatus-like body frame. Does nothing for impact resistance in an accident but a disposable flexible skin would have a weight advantage on a track.

In late July, RM Auction will offer a strange Pontiac – transparent display car that General Motors built for the 1940s World’s Fair for its upcoming auction at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. GM developed two transparent cars for the New York World’s Fair of 1939-1940, one of which was a Deluxe seven-window touring sedan and the other of which was a Torpedo five-window touring sedan.
I have never seen or heard of this car before, pretty cool stuff.

The transparent stuff is interesting but the fabric type bodies are more so. This is one way to make a "body" without going through the lengthy process with clay/fiberglass. The problem is that the results always look like a starving horse (the BMW attempt). Still, it is a really fascinating idea, just needing the right solution.
