I am not sure how old this is video is ... it was published in You Tube June 2017.

The video says it was caused be an explosion "in the rear end" which just doesn't seem likely.

Note that the cockpit stayed somewhat intact and the driver only had minor injuries. This crash shows the frame at least around the cockpit is pretty solid and that the trunk area collapse absorbing some of the energy of the crash.

Anyone know more details ..

It looks like the car was rear ended or possibly spun out causing the car to slide into something of significant mass, rear first.

Would like to know what really happened too.

Yikes, Looks like the rollbar bolt ripped through. Driver is lucky it didn't wack him in the head. Wonder how the accident happend since the BMW has damage to the side and his driver rear wheel looks like it off the rim. Thanks for sharing.

At 39 seconds you can see the third leg of the roll bar still has the bolt in it, so it must have torn the section on the hoop, rather than searing the bolt. That would take a huge amount of force. I wouldn't have thought that was actually possible. Later the passenger's third leg is shown bent in an arc.
Almost seem like something like a cement truck drove into the back of the car?

I see "The son of the owner" was driving the car and I'm pre judging this... Long skid marks on the pavement.
Would be interested to know what actually happened. Nice car. What a shame. Glad the driver is ok.

Note the fuel tank was almost untouched. No leaking that I could see. Very lucky being hit from behind or hitting something with the rear end, whichever.

I suspect it was moving at a fair clip and then came around (for whatever reason) to slide into/impact the side of the other car. The roll bar junction at the rear support tube is a weak point since the stub on the hoop is narrowed to fit inside the rear down tube. I can understand the bolt pulling through as the rear of the body is pushed up and forward on the chassis from the rear impact. I hate analyzing other's misfortune but it can help to have a look at results like this to see where things end up. I have a pair of Tangent hidden attachment kits for my dual bars but opted to use bolts instead when I mounted my shoulder harnesses to the hoops. My assumption was that the through-bolt provided greater security than the internal clamping provided by the hidden fastener system? I may have to re-visit that assumption. I bet we've all made our own determinations about the risk of our heads extending back into the bars but most wouldn't consider the possibility of the roll bars coming towards our head after a rear end collision!?

Someone posted to You Tube, that they heard the suspension exploded, which could mean collapsed. You can see the right front suspension is all out of shape, but there is no obvious damage to the front of the car's body. So collapse may have been the cause.

Amazing how a single 4mm screw can destroy a windshield (going over a speed bump) if not measured first to see if it will interfere with the glass and this car was hit or ran into something with substantia force and the windshield is untouched. Says a lot for the integral strength of the frame and the sub structures not twisting / buckling . . .

Almost looks like he backed into something at a pretty good speed and hit something at about mid height of the roll bars. the car is looks like it folded right at the back of the passenger compartment. Yet the fuel tank and rear aluminum is practically untouched. Even the tail lights are perfect.

…....caused by a minor malfunction of a major component part.....compounded by a loose nut behind the wheel...with a variety of extenuating circumstances...… WELL! That's how I would write it up... da bat
