View Full Version : What to do with the heater hose fitting on the water pump?
My beautiful Blueprint 347 is getting ready to go into the car and as I was looking everything over, I noticed that I have a heater hose fitting on the water pump. I'm not installing a heater and assume I need to plug this, but I'm not sure if I should just use a pipe plug or is there a better way to do this?

Put a heater block off cap on it

I agree with Gordon since your pump is already on the motor. I pulled the nipple and tapped it for a pipe plug but my pump was not on the motor. Either way will work fine.

In your situation, put the cap on. But keep an eye on it! I’ve seen them crack and fail sooner than you’d think.

I don't trust those rubber caps and usually drive the nipple out then unstall a freeze plug. The nipples don't come out easily so in your situation with the water pump already installed the cap is probably the only reasonable option.

I just did this. Knocked out the nipple, and tapped it for a 1/2 inch pipe plug. I did not / would not do it on the engine, it is easy to get it off of the block and into a vise. This is something that I did not want in the back of my mind, positively solves the problem forever.

I've used a copper pipe cap soldered to a short piece of copper pipe. then a short piece of heater hose to button them together only because that is what I had on hand when a heater core blew out.

I put a freeze plug in myself when I changed out my water pump. Think it was 3/4”.

Don't use those rubber caps, they only last a couple years, then crack.

I used a small piece of radiator hose, capped with a brass fitting from Lowe's... Cheap and easy.

If the rubber caps don't last long, simply replace it every year, as part of a your maintenance program. Cheap enough..
I'd suggest an expansion plug, as I have used on my rad for 6 years without issue, hut I'm not sure they make them small enough for what you need.

I found this on McMaster-Carr. What do you guys think about using tit for the plug?

We prefer the Breeze solution. No flow restriction and still allows you to use the manifold port for a sensor.

Only rated for 10psi, so it might be a little light. There is a similar one I've seen made with silicone rather than neoprene, that might have a higher psi and temp rating.

This is the solution I'm going with. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

I got the breeze part but found it didn't fit between my alternator very well. I ended up getting this molded heater hose and cut it to fit. It has all the right bends in it to fit between the alternator up to the manifold, part number NAPA 11644, Gates 19644.7616776168

That looks more professional. I just ordered this as well. You guys are great at helping me spend money!

Problem solved! Thanks for the recommendation on the pre-formed hose. It was a perfect solution.
