Are the ford brand required? They are kinda spendy @ ~$150 for the set

What about a no-name like these?:

I cant afford cheap parts, they always need to be replaced way too soon, and the performance is not up to a good aftermarket or OEM.

I put the MSD cop units on my wife's 2006 mountaineer. When I did it, the Ford cops were a lot more expensive than 150 for the set.
