So I am new to carb engines... I have a 351w stroked to 427 from Mike forte. I have gas'n headers, and factory five side pipes. I have been running the car mostly w just open headers during the build. I have not put many miles on the car. Less then 3. I am working on finishing the car up and tonight was the first night I could take the car out w the pipes on... The car is making a loud popping noise if I let off the gas, but only on the passenger side pipes. Almost a backfire type noise.
Do I need to run the car more and burn some carbon into the pipes? Or is there an issue I am missing? Any help is welcomed...
Thanks
Brian

I get the same from my 351W, mostly from the passenger side .... unless I try hard to let off at just the right speed and revs then I can get driver's side too. :-)
I had a TVR 400SE in the UK before I came to the US. 4litre V8 with a single pipe the size of a coke can (literally). If I let off at the right revs and speed I could get a fabulous set of bangs and pops and even the occasional flame.
I'm getting my carb rebuilt soon - I hope it still pops on the overrun afterwards. You don't like it?

Popping on decell is typically due to an exhaust leak.

I agree it is the cold air getting drawn into the exhaust.

What Jeff Kleiner said.
Check gaskets or header seal

Can you isolate the popping to which side the engine the popping is coming from. I would start looking at the exhaust port for traces of exhaust on the head. Maybe fire up the cobra cold and see if you feel the exhaust pushing out. I would make darn sure I found the leak before doing header gaskets for the fun of it....... If it is the gaskets look into Remflex gaskets.

to late bad moose.... hahaha i pulled the headers last night and ordered some gaskets.... also got some new gasket sealant... I do know that it is just on the passenger side. When i looked at the inside of the headers only two of the four looked like they were black on the inside.. the front two didnt look dirty at all...

This might sound strange, but don't use gaskets on the headers. Use copper high temp gasket maker and they will never blow.
I was skeptical when I read this, but decided to give it a try. I blew both of my header gaskets in the first 1000 miles. I am at 14,000+ without gaskets and no leaks.

X3, you cannot go wrong with it.

I get it too. I was told it is unburnt fuel igniting in exhausts?
