Hello there!
I am a widowed father of 3 boys, ages 3, 5 and 7 years old. My wife passed away last year from cervical cancer. I am hoping to build this car with my boys, coworkers and friend along the way. I would love to have my wife here, but can see now, life is short. No more dreaming about things, start living and doing!
I always wanted to have a sports car of some sort. I have been pretty frugal in my life and just dreamt about building a Cobra. This year I started looking at some older cars, like Fiat 124, MGM midget or Porsche 911. But then I realized and asked myself a question - "What car would really make you tickle?" I would be Shelby Cobra 1965 for sure!
So I dropped plans on purchasing anything else. Did some research and placed an order with Factory Five this month. Also called Mike Forte and placed an order there.
I really like this forum with many helpful hint and tips. Thanks!
Here is what I am getting:
MK4 Complete kit
17"/front 9"/back 10.5" wheels
+Appearance Package FREE
from Mike Forte:
SB FORD DART 347 TURNKEY ENGINE PACKAGE carburated
manual TKO600
3.55 8.8 REAREND
REAR DISC 11.65" KIT
I already spend some time and build the body buck. I am also talking to Al_C user and going visit his place this weekend. Very excited!
So this is for now.....more to come.
Thanks,
Martin

I'm very sorry about the loss of your wife.
I'm fortunate to still have mine after she survived a stroke in 2006.
Welcome Aboard!
Welcome and good luck! This has been such a fun experience for me and I hope and expect it'll be the same for you and your boys.

Sorry to hear about your wife, I'm building #9009 with my son right now, he's 17. It's been a great experience so far and we've enjoyed our hours in the shop together figuring this stuff out as we go along. Enjoy the build, look forward to hearing your progress and how the boys are enjoying it.

Hello,
Thank you all. I have couple questions.
How do I email admin? I would like to add a picture in my profile, location and couple other things.
But it is blocking me from making any changes.
Also, how do I add that nifty signature line with link to my build?

Welcome to the Builders Club..:)
Sorry for your loss. Building one of our cars, is actually pretty good therapy. That, or it will drive you insane..one of the two..:p
You will be a busy, busy man, with three boys at that age. How will you ever find the time to work on the build, is beyond me? Do you have a nanny?

Yep, anyone who signs up and lets me know they have a FFR (or one on the way) can get promoted. It's not really a "new user" thing, but more like a "spam control" thing.
:)
PS Congrats on the build! You ordered a lot more than a fun project; get ready for lifelong memories!

I know, but I am not worry at all. The last couple years I went through a hell, and this feels relaxing. I don't have a nanny, boys go to a house care.
Also, my neighbors noticed and offered some help as well. My coworkers did the same :)
I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday! I can help you fix your upside down photos, too.

Martin-
Welcome to the forum and to the Factory Five community!
You are really going to enjoy this amazing project with your sons. I have been building mine with the help of my two boys, and I cannot express just how much pleasure it brings to me. It seems that time spent in the garage allows us to share more than would be shared in other settings. It is an unusual form of therapy for me, and I hope them. I anticipate that it will provide them with some meaningful memories after we are no longer able to be in the garage together.
Best of luck to you and your boys! Don't hesitate to ask questions. There are countless folks with plenty of experience who are very giving of their time and advice! It has helped me a great deal, and I suspect you will benefit as well.
I look forward to seeing your progress. I hope your build brings you some of the same happiness mine has brought me!
Regards,
Steve

Yesterday visited Al_C place with my boys. He graciously agreed to show us his project car. Even let me touch it and sit in it! Awesome :)
I was very impressed with the amount of work completed. We talked and I picked up some valuable tips and hints. Very thankful.
Today I went to a local hardware store and picked up some tools (break line pipe bender and riveting tool).
Thank you all for the welcome and support.

Condolences on the loss of your wife!! Congratulations on your purchase and good luck on your build. I'm not to terribly far away in Jefferson City, MO and do get to the Bolingbrook area a couple times a year for work. I'm in the beginning stages of the build myself and the guys on this forum are great (although they will help you spend your money). The folks at Factory Five are also great to work with. I sent them a list of items I was missing from my inventory late Friday afternoon and they have it taken care of and preparing to ship today (Monday). Best wishes!!!

Martin, I hope this project helps you and your kids, and helps bring comfort as you continue to heal. I'll agree with AC Bill that the build process can be therapeutic. Heck, even the hours I spent in my garage just cleaning and organizing was helpful to me - my head was sort of cleaned and organized a bit with each peaceful hour sometimes.
It seems there's a bunch of us starting out at about the same time. I'll be following your build, and looking for tips from you and all those others that are going to be in process at about the same time (and of course, those that proceeded us). I hope to provide one or two of my own as well, or at least try.
Your signature says delivery is ~10/14. Enjoy that day (it is pretty EXCITING), and those that follow!

Hi Steve,
I think I am more excited!
I was quoted 368HP initially, but ended up 410HP. Mike used a different header. Can't really complain about this :)

Martin,
Your engine is awesome and looks just like mine! I got an email from Mike Forte Tuesday that my DART 347 stroker shipped. The dyno testing showed it a 377hp and 389 torque. It has EFI, maybe that why HP is lower? I also got the TKO 600 trany and a hydraulic clutch. I don't know which speedometer set up you are going to use but if it is not the mechanical type make sure you order the "plug" for the transmission.
cheers,
Mark

I finished my roadster earlier this summer. My two adult sons, adult daughter, and teenage son helped out along the way. I couldn't have done it without them. Make sure you get lots of pictures of the kids working on it. That is the best part of the build, having the kids around to help. Remember that. and when they're older, let them drive the car. It'll give them a reason to come home to visit. have fun.
keep us updated on the delivery date!

Hi Mark.
Thanks! I don't think carbureted setup would make any difference. Mike told me he used different headers, better performance and same price. Also, I don't know what you mean by the "plug."
I am getting the "whatever comes standard free" speedometer setup.
Thanks,

When you do your inventory it will be very helpful to have a device to measure bolts and thread size. These are two things I found on Amazon that helped me a TON!

Quick question. I noticed that I need a gas pump.
What would you recommend for my setup? 347 engine, carbureted. Do I need a regulator as well?
Ideally, if I can just get the whole thing someplace and plug it in would be great :)
Thanks,
Martin

Nice to see something happening. Last night we removed the fiberglass body. I noticed some misalignment in front hood area, but after a quick forum search discovered this is a 'normal.'
Labeled and removed panels last night. I think I like the metal finish. I was contemplating the color choices, but will keep it the way it is. Plus, it is pretty cold and every time I sprayed a sample it would stink the high heaven here. Also, it snowed here last night, ugh!
So with the panels removed, we started working on F panels and lower control arms. It went pretty smoothly, riveting/caulking. Bolts were easy to torque, no brute force needed :)
Since the upper arms are on back order we started to assemble the koni shocks. (note: didn't have a ring snap tool, neighbor saved the day :))
I was thinking about doing other parts, but FedEx is delivering 2 boxes from F5 on Monday. Hoping those are the upper control arms. So I will wait.

Not sure about easy, but this works.
Create a photo album on the Forum:
Start on the Forum home page and go to Gallery,
Select Add Album, Name it and make it public.
Now you have a place to store your photos that is independent of any 3rd party carriers.
Upload your photos into your album and then you can either attach your photos or imbed them in your posts.
There is a size limit on the photos you can upload, something like 1.5MB but they don't need to be that big. Various ways to resize your photos.
There is a very detailed description of how this all works in the Welcomes and Introductions Forum.
All that being said, occasionally, I still get a photo that does the up side down trick.

I take most of my photos with my phone. I store them on my computer at full resolution.
For the photos I choose to post, I email them to myself. When I hit send the phone asks what size and gives me small, med, large or full res option. I pick med or large. When I get the email I drag those images to my desktop. When I upload the photos into the gallery, they are easy to find on the desktop. Then I drag them into the trash.
Now that I write it down is seems like a PITA but I guess I'm just use to it.
-Steve
I use Flickr to post pictures to the forum. It is really simple to use and is free. The only issue is if Flickr ever decides to go the way that Photobucket did and decide to start charging for third party postings.
Here is a quick how-to for Flickr:
1. Sign up for your free Flickr account.
2. Once signed up, go to the upload screen.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4517/38330720562_ee12a9cffa_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21p9XNs)
3. Drag and drop the photos from your PC to this screen.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4574/38330722142_2586af451d_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21p9YgG)
4. Create or select a previously created album to upload your photos to.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4532/38361185911_690a9a9944_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21rR766)
5. Click the upload button.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4518/38361186511_741b2fbe20_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21rR7gr)
6. Now from your "Photostream", click on the photo you want to post and then click on the share icon.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4567/24490836018_a350660c82_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/DjaWiq)
7. Copy the BB Code link and select the size you want (768 x 1024) is what I use, and paste the link into your forum post.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4579/38361558221_cb549d0c51_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21rT1Le)
And you're done!

Your engine looks great.

Oh yes! That is what makes this build really special! These little crazy moments when kids work on the car...walking around with a screwdriver or hammer.
My wife was pretty OCD she would have flipped. I am more easy going guy. Just as a precaution, I taped the brake line closed and other critical openings, just in case ;)

Your boys are going to be so mechanical and so handy as they go through this with you! Great experience for all! Will be "Gear Heads" I bet too. Enjoy the time spent with them! I did with my two and they love doing brakes, suspension, all kinds of work on cars. Very relaxing and something fun to do as a hobby.

Hey your making great progress with all the distractions. Memories that will last a life time.
I think you want to take a second look at the upper control arms. they typically need to have the ball joint mount flipped so it points out to the wheel not in to the frame. As delivered they are typically pointing the wrong way.

Hello there. I need some feedback about break fluid reservoir mounting location. I did this based on manual, but noticed couple comments here that the canister should be located above the master cylinders. Do I need to fix this?

Some updates. The pic above, I removed the reservoir and ordered double canister. Will have to mount it to the frame member to gain some elevation.
I also ordered the Mechanical Throttle Linkage.
With the banana welded on, fluid in, we were able to install the moser 8.8 without much trouble. Everything went pretty smoothly. Only needed to clean couple holes from having too much paint inside of them. No brute force needed. And yes, put on the tires, although there isn't any reason to do that. It just looks cool! :)
One thing I wondered how to make sure that axle is aligned with engine/tranny/shaft? I guess no way to tell until the combo is in place.
Also I noticed one front tire would rub the f panel when turned all the way. I guess this can be adjusted during alignment?
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4581/38810621881_d7694dec5a_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/228yzK8)
The boys were playing who can spin the tire more and tug a war with them. Also learned about fuel system, aka what happens when you pump the gas at the gas station.

I started to work on fuel lines, installed the fuel filter.
Mike Forte installed inline fuel pump that doesn't utilize a return line. So I guess I don't have to run one, just cap it off.
I am purposely leaving the floor and cockpit panel off, they are all drilled now. I think this will make things easier for me run; brake lines, emergency brakes, fuel line...

One of my front tires kisses the F panel when at full lock too. Not sure what can be done about it. Possibly limit the travel or bend the F panel slightly so there is clearance?

Breeze sells some plastic clips that limit travel. You can trim them as needed and they can be added at any time. When you set your alignment some of the travel might change. My wheel travel seemed extreme and then I tightened everything up and aligned the front and it was less dramatic.
FF Metals makes a Wide Tire F Panel. You can see the extra bends in the bottom of the photo.
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=69388&d=1498435659
I installed the wide tire panels and they don't rub but might need to add the limit blocks anyway to keep from pinching my brake lines. One thing leads to another...

You need to raise your reservoirs when you get the new double canister set up.
The top of those puppies needs to be above the height of the Master Cylinders.
You can see the height of my triple reservoir set up about 20 seconds in to this video:

Oh, a lot of work done this weekend. Ran brake line front and rear, ran a fuel line on driver side. My fuel pump is located on left side, no return line.
Also got my portable welding machine from Amazon for $90 bucks. Went to a local hardware store and got some metal for $30 bucks.
I cut this out after marking the lines. I couldn't get long metal pieces to make it edge to edge. But I am happy with the final results. :) I am planning on getting carpet and the end.
I didn't do anything with the battery. I kinda like it there tucked away. I may just install those jumper plugs someplace more accessible.

Used some metal to make up for the lost angle braces. I heard a lot of back and forth about the rear end collision, but I am sticking with this.

Did some quick google search on how to weld. Then practice on spare metal to adjust the wire speed and amps. The setting is only low/high. So it was pretty simple.
Setting is on low and speed on 3 to lay nice bead. Cleaned and painted the bare metal.

Daddy's been pretty busy the last couple days. I was able to put the tko600 in today. It wasn't that hard, just to make sure that darn fork stayed on the pivot bolt.
Everything was already greased and adjusted. I only had to learn how things worked so I can come to the same conclusion. (Mike Forte is pretty awesome)
Also made sure TOB is installed the correct way.

Thanks Robert,
I am happy that you find this info helpful. Right now I am getting ready to drop the combo in.
items to check:
-transmission oil (ordered, pending)
-transmission plug cover (ordered from Forte, pending)
-mount blocks (done)
-clutch fork (done)
-A frame (checked and it fits, done)
questions:
-what else should I prep for?
-how do I check that everything is in line? tko600-driveshaft-rear end (I could do a visual check for straight line, but not sure what else...)
-to level engine, do I just place a level on intake manifold and level it?
You and the boys are making great progress! Just one recommendation - hold off on adding the trans fluid until after it is installed in the car. You are going to have a fairly severe angle on the trans when you install it and the fluid will be pouring out of the tail housing at the yoke.

Crack open the fill plug while its out and on the floor, Someone else reported theirs was really torqued in tight and a pain to get it free after installed.. and X2 fill after drive shaft is in... the yoke is the seal on that end with out the Yoke in place there is noting to keep the fluid from poring out. I keep a spare yoke for when I am dropping my Trans

What a day, nice -7F outside. I got couple guys come over this morning. We talked about the plan and overall safety. We were using lift plate. You picked it up with a single hook. Nah, I am sure every time you walk by your project you have to stop for a moment and check on things.
Here in Chiberia, the cold will stay for a while. Sometime I need to move parts inside the house for couple days to warm up and be workable. For example, plastic connectors on dash gauges would crack in this cold. Also the heat shield material doesn't stick well in this cold.
Never mind the blue painter tape, I needed to use a heat gun to soften it and peel it easier

Not much progress, just bunch of small things that needs to be finished. Some parts don't fit right. And it is cold here.
One thing I finished was the e brake clevis with pulleys. It turned out pretty nice, no more rubbing.

Also worked on the gas throttle linkage today. It is looking pretty good so far. Found out that I need to cut the rods to size and threat one size. (these are the small things that will require multiple trips to stores)
Now I need to get a drill bit size #3. No idea, but will need to get one before working on the threat.
I will cut the rods and leave there some room for adjustment later. It should be pretty easy to adjust the gas pedal response.

Adjust ride height first. Rear suspension has to be loaded; i.e. stands under the axle with the car's weight on the springs.

I need to do some research on 'normal' height and get one of those wrenches to adjust the koni shocks.
"Normal" is about 4 1/2" + or - 1/4" or so. No wrench needed; with the weight off of the springs the collars can be turned by hand.

Thanks Jeff.

Your final ride height is going to be in the 4-inch range, floor to bottom of the 4-inch tubes. Often a little more in the back, a little less in the front. But they will settle when new. For now, I'd recommend 4-1/2 to 4-3/4 front and back.
You don't need any special wrenches for the shocks. You have two already. On the ends of your arms. :o Unload the springs with a floor jack when adjusting. Don't try to adjust them under load. Some recommend some anti-sieze on the threads, and green Loctite (the wicking kind) for the sleeve to the body to keep it from turning. I've never done either and not had a problem. But keep an eye on it and do what works for you.

Thanks guys for the info. For some reason I would loose a focus with a simple task. AND with a complex one I would finish in no time. :D

Pinion angle party
Please comment on this. I am working on this tonight and likely this weekend. I am not technically versed in mechanical parts terminology.
Here we go: Been tweaking and turning up down things. Here is where I will stop and get some beer and pizza.
Tranny: the end is pointing down 2 degrees.
3link solid axle/ pinion is leveled, 0 degree. (measuring the front of the pumpkin for future reference)
I feel like I should lower the pinion about 2 degrees , so when this thing kicks up during 'hard acceleration' it will go back to 0.
(I only plan to hard accelerate on Friday afternoon and weekends :)
The part I am kinds confused is the parallel view. If I have tranny pointing down 2 degree, then the pinion should go 2 degrees up to be parallel. But this would make the gap 4 degrees.
Thanks,
Martin
So what do I do now? I

I think you mean parallel, not perpendicular.
I know you watched the pinion angle saga a couple of weeks ago. Please don't overthink it and make it harder than it needs to be. Does this help:
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=78314&d=1514586767
All you're looking for is about 2 degrees difference in the orientation shown in the diagram. Print this image and rotate it so that the line through the transmission is pointing down front to rear if it helps you visualize it. You have my number if you get stumped but it really isn't voodoo or black magic.
Good luck,
Jeff

I downloaded the Tremec driveline app and it mentioned there..However, angles that are 'equal and opposite' are most desirable...
So based on this logic I should be fine. Right now I am at 0 and down 2 degrees. So when I hard accelerate hard it may kick up to 2 degrees up. That would make it equal and opposite.

Making progress. Huge thanks to Jeff for simplifying the pinion angle! Got it lined up and works line a charm :) Ended up using 7/8" spacer under tko600.

Worked on couple other things. I know the oil relocation isn't needed for my small block, but it really clears the way for the clutch cable. So I did it and like it very much!

Radiator lower support.
Originally I wanted to go with the set from Breeze site. After looking at this I figured, heck I can make my own! Don't get me wrong, I don't really have a budget for the build, but like to use a common sense and make my own parts and safe money for things that I can't figure it out. Pus like to say; I build it! :)
Went to Home Depot and got some parts. 1/2" x 36" threaded rod, 4x 1/2" nuts and some wooden porch steel plate.
I got some leftover hose from the oil relocation kit and it fits nicely over the 1/2" rod.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4602/39061020524_19f83531ce_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/22vFWx7)20180118_184606 (https://flic.kr/p/22vFWx7)
After ~30min of drilling and using angle grinder I ended up with something like this:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4628/24901171517_6efb2967ae_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/DWr1Kp)20180118_191326 (https://flic.kr/p/DWr1Kp)
Then measured 51 degrees on radiator, drilled couple holes and installed it.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4723/38871983975_c724e6db8d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/22dZ5yg)20180118_193152 (https://flic.kr/p/22dZ5yg)
I think it looks pretty slick with some room to adjust, if needed.
Parts: 10 bucks
45min sweat labor.

Coming along nicely Martin! Maybe this photo is deceptive but it appears that your reserviors may be a little too far forward; you need them to be no less than 20" back from the radiator cross tube to have adequate hood gas strut clearance.

I finished installing the foot boxes, firewall and tunnel. Considering doing the back wall and floors as well.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4767/24969421407_b8f0b68b1b_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/E3sP4D)
Also finished the water cooling. The inline filler neck in complete kit comes with tubes on both ends. Those are too small for stainless pipe. I cut them and used other tubes. Also went to Autozone to get couple tubes with size and angle I needed. The clerk kept asking for a car model...not very helpful....ended up going to back and visually picked the ones that I could use/cut apart needed.
(it was from Dodge and Nissan :)
hint: when connecting the tubes. It is pretty hard to slide the rubber over the tube. Perhaps the cold. I warmed up the rubber to soften a bit and used a bit of oil on inside to slide in easier. Worked like a charm.
installed one of the headers (bolts are only hand tight). Didn't do the starter side, will need to work on the wiring part first.
[url=https://flic.kr/p/23GuLjX]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4654/39839678171_c309e7989c_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/E3sP4D)

You can see the rear brake line in close proximity to headers, couple inches, but I will cover this with some heat shield tape to be safe. Originally I ran it inside the foot box, had a leak and needed to rework it. Real pain doing this inside.
I thought about moving the battery to the front. But then realized, heck I would like to have a disconnect switch, so I need to run the cable back and forth.
So, battery will be in the trunk with charge post [url]https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BZZA5Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1 (https://flic.kr/p/23DDTfS)
Then will install the disconnect switch under dash and some terminal block or stub post (likely in engine bay) and one lead wire to solenoid. All will be streamlined, no going back and forth.
One thing I noticed other people do is "starter relay" Not sure what that is or if I need it.

So I took week off and visited FL Orlando/ Clearwater and Legoland with my boys. Much needed break and now I asking myself why do we still live in Chicago? :)

Hm, after cranking for awhile and checking that fuel was getting to the mechanical pump, but not up to carburetor. Called Mike Forte and it was recommended to pour some gas in carburetor to get engine start up and spin the pump faster.
Will work on this Friday or this weekend.
Almost there :)

Ok, more updates. After the start up I noticed couple things leaking.
1/ The gas line was leaking - fixed.
2/ The brake lines were leaking - fixed.
3/ The coolant was leaking and busted open, one of the rubber tubes wasn't properly hooked up - fixed.
4/ I forgot to run the coil wire feed. Noticed the wire in EFI bundle. I wasn't paying it much attention since I am carburetor. - fixed.
5/ Noticed missing fan temp sensor. Luckily, I noticed the temp getting high and stopped - part in mail.
I forgot to connect the green fan switch wire in sending bundle. For some reason I was thinking that the temp gauge wire would trigger the cooling fan. I was obviously wrong.
Other than that it went pretty good.
I also installed the vinyl dashboard using rivnuts. I used those on brake line cover as well.
I worked on finishing the sound/heat insulation. Used up 3 rolls and it was just about right amount to cover.

Hey Martin
Things are looking good in your garage!!
I love the boys cobra....you can NEVER have too many bottons on the dash at that age
I have a similar situation....lost my wife suddenly just before New Years (never sick a day in her life and then...)
We had always said when we hit 50 I would build us a cobra for her and I to tool around in ( she wasn’t to keen on all the race cars ). However that didn’t happen....so a month ago I jumped on the train in Chicago and went to Factory Five and placed my order. My MK4 will be delivered in July and I will build it in her honor!
If you feel like a visit or need a set of hands I am only 45 minuets from you and would love to pick your brain.
Thanks and I am REALLY enjoying your build with the boys!

Working on some odd things.
Started to assemble the hood hinges and noticed they are bit loose. The nut is tightened all the way and still room to play. I may need to use additional washer to make it snug.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4787/40718527751_2636aaea96_z.jpg
I am not sure how far in the steering wheel goes, but it looks like it should be flushed with the base. You can see the rod still needs to go. Still room to go, but pretty tight. May need to sand the side a bit.
[url=https://flic.kr/p/Fo2yiZ]https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4802/25847180667_d70fcbcb0b_z.jpg
I heard people mentioning something about door handles, so I tweak them as well :)
Found some spare bolts from toilet and they fit pretty good! (note: new, never used ;)
I still need to to do the handle knob, but don't have the proper tools.

Then inspected for leaks and missing parts. Got 3 leaks, gas line, oil, and tranny leaks where I used the speedo instead of spending more money (lesson learned, need the correct plug)
Other than that, temp is ~80C,
No major noise or vibration,
smooth ride.
Brakes can use a bleed again, kinda spongy.

Last night I was able to finish the door handles. (used some toilet screws and 6/32s for the handle knobs)
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/794/26956724908_bbb42a3e97_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/H55ga7)
Also worked on side pipes hangers. I am not sure if they provide any support at all. For now I will leave it like it is. I left the (pipe side) inner screw out to allow for movement up/down. Considering mounting the second rubber support to the frame. Thoughts?

Your build is so clean. Nothing like mine. I was told that the hangers for the side pipes need to be under some tension so that's what I did. Might be a few threads on it if you do a seach, but I was told by the Traveling Builder (Mark Dougherty) and he knows his stuff so I took it as gospel.

Hi, thanks. I am trying, but it isn't a show car level :)
Can you share a pic, please? I am thinking, to get some tension, to install the second rubber mount on the frame side. This will make things a bit tighter and still allow for movement, if needed.

You need to add the second rubber support on the frame. That will provide the necessary support.
Using only one bolt on the pipe itself, and leaving it slightly loose so it can pivot, is recommended by many. Prevents possibly breaking off the tab on the pipe.

I think if you charged $.25 per ride, you could likely pay it off in a couple of weeks; those smiles tell the whole story!
If you would like to stop by, just let me know. My creation is far behind yours in progress. However, you are welcome to come take a look. Shoot me a PM if you'd like.

Yesterday we started to work on trunk carpet. I like the look and feel. Went to Menards and got some car carpeting, they have multiple colors. Baby wanted to get a green, I choose the plain and boring gray.

I started working from the seat belt area and slowly work my way out. No need to measure much, this stuff is pretty flexible and forgiving.

The last couple days we have been driving around (~32 miles) our neighborhood.
-fixed leaks and don't see any new ones.
-engine temp is ~80C and fan working great.
-no parts missing
-no strange/usual noise
-brakes works better after I bled them again
-speedo is working, forgot to attach gps cable
-tach is working, forgot to run a cable to coil to pick up the pulse.
-noticed fuel pump needs config, later
-clock (heard that some people use the radio/mem cable from resetting it over and over)
Never seen so many thumbs up driving around
We even saw a police car, got bit scared - cop just looked and gave us a thumb up!

I decided that I would need to charge my electronic devices, phone and such. So I ordered this USB and 12v charging kit from Amazon.
From leftover cover I cut out bracket and mounted under the dash. To power it I used one of the unused cables heat/radio/wipers/light, works fine.
Out of sight and supports the dash as well. :)

I also used the radio_mem feed to power my clock.
I am in the process of installing the cockpit carpet. I was surprised how easy it was to the trunk areas, so I started this as well. Got most of it done, a lot of black in pictures :)
Hint: get a really sharp knife and don't cut your fingers! Lay carpet pieces before gluing. That way you can see how the seems lines up and minimize the trimming.

Hello,
I felt like trying the body on today. It was two man job, surprisingly easy. I haven't done front wheel alignment, so it may still look off.
I heard that is kinda important to line up the door opening with the lock thingy. I am not sure what else to look for. To me it look pretty good!
But again, I have no idea
The side exhaust pipes aren't lining up with the cutouts, but I think that is somewhat expected and will be tweaked later.
I am thinking I should finish the wheel alignment first.

It appears that you don't have the body all the way down so that the rockers can wrap around under the chassis. 3 link rear? If so the rearward position of the back wheel in the opening may indicate that the pinion angle is not set properly however until the body is fully down and located front to rear we can't know for sure if that may simply be because the body needs to move.

So today is another 'body on and body off' day. I noticed couple spots where the bulbs seal was pretty tight - trunk sides and lower areas. Also, the door striker area could use a trim.
I was thinking about trimming the dashboard lip part, but first I only removed couple washers that I used under the screws to hold it in place.
After I trimmed all these areas and removed the washers, the body was super easy to install. Like 30sec :)
Next I installed the rear and front QJ bolts. Check the gap in hood opening in relation to the frame, pretty close.
Now I am prepping for the windshield fit....more to come.

...I was bit spooked about the wheel position, but realized later that alignment is still needed.
To make me feel better I turned the upper arm bolts and move the wheel in favorable angle
Summary:
My door strikers are about 1/4" recessed in relation to the fiberglass door opening. On both sides.
Body is wrapped around the bottom edge (on sides).
I will trim the dashboard rolled edge. I noticed it isn't entirely even and see some gaps there. It isn't a must, but it bugs me.
Trimmed trunk area, sides and lower plates about 1"4"
Trimmed both sides out panels to get better fit. Panels behind the seats where the bulb seal goes.
Front body centered in relation to the frame. Measured front multiple frame members.
Ignored the front wheels, no alignment done. The rear looks pretty good.
Overall body fit experience: Scared the heck out - talked about it - got some beer - simplified - super easy

The cheap floor mats are a great idea, but be CAREFUL they won't stay put, unless you anchor them some way or mount them to something stiff.
The drivers side will push forward and can get bunched up under your gas and/or brake. Just be careful.

I was having this same debate myself but have decided on going with Gas-N pipes because of the sound. They are pricey so it will be an add on for later, which means I will be going with the bare pipes that come with the kit first. No sense spending on the upgraded polished pipes when I'm just going to replace them later.

Kind of apples and oranges there. The polished stainless sidepipes from Factory Five are just that. Polished stainless steel. The base pipes (I'm assuming that's what you're talking about) are mild steel with a standard mill finish and not made for polishing. They need to be painted, ceramic coated, whatever. HTH

Last couple days. Started on alignment. To be honest, I don't like it. My floor isn't leveled, I needed to measure each time I moved to other wheel. Also, keeping up with 3 different angles isn't that easy. First aligned the rear, then ran some kite strings and measured toe. The caster and camber is another story by itself. I got it close, but still need a professional shop to dial it perfect. No worries there.

I found it easiest to set ride heights, square the rear, set front camber and caster, yes it requires going back n forth a bunch and sometimes you're turning the upper adjusters 1 flat at a time. Once I get the caster and camber where I want it, repeatable and accurate, I set the toe. Go back and double check and be proud.
Make sure you have your steering rack centered in the frame and then have the steering wheel marked for the center of the rack. When you do toe, make damn sure the front wheels are straight ahead. You can have 1/16 toe and still be 5* to the right...
I went through a lot of questions and re-dos on mine, but I got it and on Go-Kart, the Boss was straight and cool....

Busy, busy last couple days. I needed to double check my alignment. I did it myself, but wasn't entirely trusting it. So I did something I shouldn't - I drove it to nearby Firestone shop. It was about 2 miles.
When I got there, the entire shop stopped working and came over and started taking pictures and asking questions.
Same while driving in traffic, it felt like I was in a parade - people smiling and staring :)

Trimmed dash edge,
installed the body,
fitted back and front bolts, using 3/4 sleeve and rubber grommets.
installed lights,

trunk lock and plate/light.
Windsheild, pain in the butt, used shims
fitted door, passenger side looks better, driver is ok
install door lock, drilled out the lock opening on driver side for easy unlock
install door rubber hinges

Busy, busy, busy. Worked on many things I can't even recall them. Looking at the pictures:
-lights
-front bumper kit
-rear bumper kit
-cut and fitted side pipes
-drilled seats and bolted in place
-drilled submarine belt, HUGE thanks to Jacob McCrea for shipping the brackets!!!
Also, did a Doughnuts and Starbucks run to test out the cup holders. For some reason we drove ~20miles. :)
Observations:
-59 miles total
-smiling for no reason :)
-noticed oil pressure fluctuating a bit. For some reason I thought it would stay still
-no missing parts
-no leaks
-turn signal relay bad. It worked before, not it doesn't. I switched it with the flasher relay to validate it. Ordered a new one from Amazon.

ok, I knew this would come at some point...oil leak. I noticed one last night. Couple oil drops in pan/bell housing area.

First, I freaked out. I envisioned taking everything apart and spending days working on it :(
Then, started tracing it. I figured to start in highest spot - that would be valve covers. And yes, I felt some oil there! Called Mike F. got the proper bolts torque and torque them. While doing this I noticed more oil seeping. For now I will monitor and keep my fingers crossed.

It is so nice outside, I don't want to work on this car. I want to drive more :)
about 225 miles so far.
-valve cover is leaking,
-fan heat sensor is leaking (tiny)
-the car feels very stiff and solid. As I keep finishing various parts, it feels really solid.
-no missing parts.
-some work shoes are bit wide :)
Getting there, working on rear splash guards.

I have 2 wonderful long time Factory Five friends in Jupiter; John Phillips and Richard Bailey. Pretty much rank #1 and #2 on the list of the world's greatest guys :) Both have owned & built a number of FFRs dating back to the very beginning (I always used to tell Dave Smith that John was responsible for selling more of his cars than anyone who didn't draw a paycheck from FFR). I'll hook you guys up when you get there. Also my wife and her horses spend every winter just about 15 miles north in Stuart and I visit frequently so we'll for sure make it a point to get together when I'm there.
Best of luck to you and your boys on this new adventure!

I was expecting that we would do some functional checking, lights, horn, safety...nope.
(it was raining and I ordered a hand windshield wiper from Amazon. Didn't even ask if I have one. I guess IL doesn't require one.)
Car is registered as 1965.
Now waiting 7-10 days to get the title and plates.

Thanks,
Martin

Approaching 500mile mark. So far so good! Car is steady, fast, and loud :)
Couple things I learned the last couple of weeks:
- It isn't easy to order Starbucks
- Very thankful that I did the trunk mod. I can do Costco/groceries trips!
- I find every excuse to drive the car.
- This isn't commuter car, but I am still in denial :)
- I may have ~410HP, but I am only using ~120HP
- Make sure to lock the door while driving, the DO open wide!
- The sun screen and hat is a must!
- Manual steering is a work out while parking.
- I haven't done any more work on the car.
Boys did some custom paint job and hand prints!

Doing some much needed improvements. This trunk mod is pretty slick, I was afraid I may have to cut the rod and have a less height, but didn't have to. It was pain to add the retaining pin without dropping the gas tank, but couple curse words and it was right in there.

So here I come again. I built my car, and been driving in gel coat for over 2 years. Always planned on having someone else to do the body prep and paint.
Now I am considering doing the body fitment and body work myself. I live in Florida and the summer can be brutal, so this is considered my off season.
Can someone share some existing forum treads please? I would welcome really basis steps and pictures.

Here is to more sanding. One thing I am learning is that nothing is straight on this car. And when something feels and looks right, it is the right way.
I am glad that Jeff K. is just a phone call away and willing to help out and give advice.
I worked on trunk and it turned out pretty good. I used a 1/4" tape and it took me about 3 or 4 times to get it in right shape. After that it was just more sanding and blocking. I think the hardest part was to attach the trunk to brackets !!! I got it pretty close, but it can get better, so much pain in a butt :)
I do realize this will take time and I can't cut any corners as the body work is the most important part in paint job. I don't plan on painting it myself, I have couple painter leads and plan.
All I am doing is the best job I can. I won't hold my painter liable for any bodywork mistakes.
The good thing is, the more I spend sanding and fitting the panels, the more confident I feel about doing this work. (also, having the right tools helps, big air compressor, air sander, air saw, air grinder)

Here I was working on the hood. Same process, taping with 1/4 inch tape and sanding in stages, took 3 or 4 times again to get the gaps right. The hood looks recessed, but that is due to missing rubber seal.
Again, this is challenging, but very rewarding when I see the gaps are even and it looks right. (in pictures the hood is just loosely sitting there now. I had to move it so many times, so I just took this picture today)

Great to see someone else crazy enough to do the body work themselves. Maybe based on inexperience I tended to use the Rage Gold hardner up before reaching the end of the gallon. You can order the harder online for 10 bucks or so. I think I went on the high side because one time early on I was on the low side and even after 12 hours of cure it tended to gum the sandpaper. Used 2 gallons but I'm sure more than a gallon was sanded off.

Yes! I was overwhelmed how much work that is. Right now I am focusing on one task at a time and it is more manageable. It will take some time to get this right, but I am patient and sanding along :)
I am still just sanding, Rage Gold is next. One thing I am learning I need to rely on my fingers a lot, how things feel and flow. If it feels right it is likely good.

In one of your pictures it looks like you went all the through the fiberglass on the rear of the passenger side door. Assuming the horizontal lines are some type of internal channels. Had a similar high spot but I chose to build up around it. Curious what the experienced guys have done in this type of situation.
