View Full Version : Another "First" Start

I'm not going to claim it's the actual first start, it's probably about the 4th start or so. I had let the engine go through a heating cycle or two to purge the cooling system and look for leaks before the video. Pretty uneventful which is a good thing. I've still got one coolant fitting that is weeping a little that I'm going to have to drain some coolant to fix but other than that all is good.
It's a pretty high idle in the video but once it settles into a normal idle it really lopes along with a 110* cam lobe separation. I've go-carted it a few times and the cam isn't all that happy in the lower RPM's below about 1500-1800. Once past that it lights up like an absolute BEAST though. It makes for a bit of surging at parking lot speeds but it sounds good and has gobs of power. It was an acceptable trade-off for ~550hp for track use at high RPM's. I can't wait to get my first 30 easy miles on it, some fresh oil and filter, then get into it a little with some higher RPM runs per break-in procedures.
These milestones really are a great feeling!

Nice sound. I have an LS3 in my 72 Vette. Awesome motor! Tons of torque.

Congrats. It sounds good. Find someone local who tunes ls motors and they will be able to work out the issues and make it run even better. The canned tune needs to be adjusted for the air intake and exhaust.
I got my ls motor mounts, trans mount, and driveshaft test fitted last weekend. I'm way behind you on my build though. With a gm spec TKO600 the factory five coyote driveshaft fit just right.

Thanks! And I agree that a tune will help since the stock tune is with a GM air intake and cast exhaust manifolds vs. my custom intake and 1-7/8" long tube headers. For now it'll do just fine and the surging isn't bothersome, just very noticeable. I'm guessing it might get a little old after the initial euphoria wears off just like people comment on the FFR sidepipes. Amazing to hear the loud raspiness at first but after a few thousand miles the nostalgia wears thin with some people.
Time will tell I guess.
