I had the rare privilege of being stationed in Okinawa, Japan in the early '80s and got to watch the SR-71 take off twice a week. What is most amazing about the SR-71 is that it was designed without the help of computers. The designers engineered this amazing aircraft using pencil and paper and a slide rule.

Having been that lowly fellow in that Cessna (150 Aerobat Rental) because it was the cheapest plane I could fly made me totally appreciate your post.

I think I read somewhere that the SR-71 (a Kelly Johnson Skunkworks project) was delivered under budget, ahead of schedule and exceeded performance specs.....different times.

Truly an inspiration. If you ever find yourself flying into or out of Dulles airport, do yourself a favor and stop at the Udvar Hazy museum just down the road from the airport. They have a ton of really cool exhibits including the Enola Gay, an SR-71, space shuttle Discovery, and much, much more.

The first static display SR71 I saw was at Eglin air base museum on the Florida panhandle in late 90's. I was blown away. Absolutely amazing. Then, in June of this year, I had the pleasure of touring the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton Ohio (one of the cruises at the London Cobra Show). That was the second time seeing the Blackbird. There was SO much ultra cool historical aircraft there it was overwhelming. Lots of X planes like the early x-1B and X-5 up to the XB-70, the X-29. I was surprised to see a couple of Canadian entries at the museum. The AVRO Avrocar and CF-100 were on display. Just a little disappointing there was no mention of the most technically advanced fighter of the 1950's. The AVRO Arrow

Ah, the Brian Schul SR 71 story...never gets old...awesome. That guy is the luckiest guy I have ever met. He gives me the inspiration to "never give up." That book of his, The Sled Driver has some really cool pictures of the sled.
