I was anxious because I was shopping around for a future donor car, which I found. I put a deposit down on an 02 WRX that I'm going to use as a commuter/track car until the 818 comes out, so hopefully it will use the WRX engine/drivetrain.

my potential donor has a 6 speed, so i am waiting to hear about compatibility there... the motor and trans of the 02 is what they are building it around

From the downward spiral of of posts in the 818 section since the end of the contest, you would think that the powers that be would want to do something to maintain interest. Post more photos of the prototype frame, deliver on the posting in the forum of the additional 100-700 entries which we have not yet seen.

Something.

Anything.

It's really not their job to keep us entertained. Regular updates would be great, but as we know, everything is still up in the air. We don't want to go through, "It's gonna be like this... " and the next day, "Oops. This won't work because of street regs in Idaho."

Then we all get our panties in a bunch because we really had out hearts set on this and we already figured out the perfect way to do this and besides, we don't even like that at all. And is anybody in Idaho even gonna build an 818? Why can't they just make theirs different to fit the crazy regs of crazy Idaho? What kind of person would live in Idaho with regs like that?..... And so on, and so on, and so on, and so on, and so on....

I think they're doing the right thing about keeping a tight lip. This may be the most critical point in the development of the 818. Let's just let Factory Five do what they do best - make GREAT cars.

It has simply been a MONSTER BUSY time here at FFR. Im on the way out the door and will post a full update tomorrow. Right now we are building three 1/4 scale (big) models that we will share and get feedback on since real-life is at times different than drawings. There is ALOT going on! Sorry for the silence and time away. More tomorrow.

Even that little bit of info has me excited! What three designs? What will they look like when they are scaled to the chassis and not cheated with enormous tires and wheels? What's the time line to get the designs done? Waiting on the edge of my seat in heated anticipation.

Guys, It has been a very long day and I have to shoot over to a friends house. I will write up this update later tonight before I hit the sack. I will tell you that we are making four separate "1/4 scale models" (three digital CAD pinted versions and one sculpture with perhaps more scultpures to come) with both CAD assistance from Solidworks and the scuplture kids at Rhode Island School of Design. RISD is starting with the Xabier design since I like it so much and since it can be converted to a cool track model (I said how much I loved the 818R concept). The point is that I want everyone to see the designs in real life and in real scale. Jim in R&D is in charge of the project and has selected the top three... BUT as the budget allows and since the chassis/running gear is ahead of shaping, I want to explore some other designs to satisfy my THREE car designs, 1. the $9,900 subaru based car (likely a roadster for cost), 2. A low C of Drag Coupe to be powered by a TDI powerplant to net a build-it-yourself ultra efficient car (to reach 70 mpg goal), and a track capable design (either modified 818R of Xabiers, or a full-on dedicated track model). More to come, sorry for the silence but we've been extremely busy since open house.

Well, lets see here... Where to start. I am looking at this project in stages and considering the scope of it and the potential to the company of a successful development, I think it wise to focus on goals and stages and NOT make bold predictions that don't come true. Also, this car/(s) has already been under development for some time when you consider that the tdi tech was started with the west philly high car two years ago and the gel coating/mold making work on the mk4 was started with being able to do paint-free panels. I guess what I'm saying is I want to talk about the stages we have completed as well as those that lie ahead to give you guys an accurate update on the project.

The design contest was done for several reasons. The chassis work was being done concurrently, but the body needed the community of racers and drivers. With more than 700 designs and a really great debate here and on grm's forum, the results were fantastic. Let me review the stages.

There were a ton of amazing designs. Xabiers track model 818R has been BURNED in my mind as the car I personally want to build and terrorize corvettes with on the track... Still, the street version os very pretty as well, tho perhaps needing some more "radical lines" just my thoughts.

i am a big fan of flared fenders... just saying... it looks good with a roof as well, whether it is a easily removed hard top or a roll away soft top the street version pulls it off nicely

Very much hoping a street version of Xabier's design (with removable top) DOES make the final cut as one of production choices. I just LOVE that shape. Also hoping that you don't "radicalize the lines" too terribly much. But I'm sure it will be done with flair.........

Thanks for all the new info, here and on the new thread you created. GREAT STUFF!!

It is a very tough balancing act, but one that Jim and his master shaper John have navifgated successfully in the past, that is making beautiful shapes, making them stunning, and also making them "able to be made". I LOVE Xabiers designs (along with some of the other entrants) and we ARE making a model of his car to see how the drawings translate into the actual reality. I think Jim mentioned to me the very challenge of my request, that Xabiers lines are beautiful and making the design more "radical" would/could harm the car... I will leave it up to the Model results and changes Jim decides to make, then see what the community says about the shape/changes. Bottom line is the car has to stunning and we are very very aware of this.

would like to see the top50/100 project gallery...

I have been pushing for that for quite awhile. Thanks Dave for all of your recent posts.
I am really disappointed,I was thinking about making a comment about how much I would have loved to see Dave put a web cam on the guys working on the 1/4 scale models .
I just read one of his comments saying they weren't going to show pictures, until they were done.

Does anyone know if FFR will be offering a complete kit for the 818 - just like they do for the roadster?

The concept is single donor. You buy the kit, you supply a donor WRX, you have every part you need to build a car.
