First you need A tran's that's not any longer than the T5 so the U joints don't bind. I'm not shure if the drive shaft yoke will work but it can be changed. You will need A radiator with trans cooler ( yes trans fluid has to run through the rad to keep A constant temp.) You can use the clutch interlock wiring for nutral safety switch. And fab the floor shift.
Chaz...

Willy,

I can be done, you will most likely have to either move the engine forward a bit, and possibly change the trans tunnel some, but it's doable. As to the length of the transmission, just fine out the difference between a T-5 and an AOD, and we can help you figure things out. There have been a few Roadsters done with AOD's, so there is some data out there.

Looked for the trans lenghts a t-5 is 24.7 and a AOD is 30.5, so this is a problem this would only give me 6 in for the drive line? as for the shifter I looked at the Lokar AOD shifter with the cable. as for the tunnel mods will see but if it made for a t-5 then sould will have to look at the over all mesrerments of the AOD, will look into that

OK was wrong on the last post the t5 "without bell houseing is 24.7" with 31.9 and the AOD is 30 3/8" with bell, that helps alot, looked some on the Roadster forum and looks like they all use the normal drive shaft, just have to make a couple of frame mods nothing big, Looking better all the time.:)

Willy,

That's good news, it will take less than you think, we'll be here to help in any way we can. Where are you located, so we can kind of plug you in to someone close that has done this?

Make it a paddle shift if possible - I bet it'd help your resale value vs a traditional autotragic.

To reduce the impact of driveshaft length you can go with an IRS - the driveshaft doesn't need to be as long because the pumpkin stays in place and you won't need a lot of available angle from your U-joints.

Also John Spina put an automatic in a Spyder; granted, it's mated up with a Buick turbo V6 but you still may be able to glean some insight from his build. http://www.gnspyder.com/

Thanks Dave,

Anyone else out there that has any links to a Auto Trans install?

Willy,

What's your engine? How much HP? You may want to modify your AOD a bit. Stock, they don't hold up to much more than 400hp. Also, you have to do the "AOD shuffle" if you're planning on taking it to the dragstrip at all. Here's two sites that have lots of great info on Ford autos:

To do a paddle shifter, you'd need an electronically controlled transmission like an AODE or a 4R70W. If I ever have to replace my tranny, I'm going with a 4R70W, Baumann controller, and paddle shifters.

looked at the 4R70W but what I saw was it was more for the 4.6l and more modern drive trains, will look at the AODE and you say paddel shifter ( one on the steering wheel? ), was wanting to keep it looking a little period correct so was going with the AOD and a lokar 6" shifter looks alot like the original stick if I did the paddel would have to come up with some paddel systme to go with the Factory five wood steering wheel have some ideas but would like the car to keep that "Old school" look

Whats wrong with using a C4 or C6?

Good idea looked at the c4 spec and found it to be 1/2' shorter than the aod and 40 lbs lighter, has 26 spline so will have to make that work should not be a problem. the artical I read also said it was not so beefy in the middle so that would help with clerance problems Thank for the idea.

One problem c4 is a three speed and the aod is four, the c6 is 2 3/4" longer the the aod and is even longer than a t5

the 4R70W also was used behind the 302 in the 2001 Explorer so lots of them out there. great trans and is basically an AODE witha wide gear set for better highway
