I just saw the 2012 Scion FR-S concept car. It looks pretty much what they're trying to do with this design. Rumor has it it would be for the low $20K. What do you guys think?

Its kinda cool - It is being developed with Subaru, Scion will be rear-wheel drive, and the subu is all wheel drive. I think it looks cool, but I don't want to buy it..... also it's not a roadster and I need the wind in my girlfriends hair!

Um you don't know much about the toyobaru do you? neither version will be awd. The engine sits too far back in he chassis to use an awd transmission.

Here's my "I haven't done a shred of research but I will pronounce myself an expert immediately" take on it:
Scion has always had cars that look great in theory. What they deliver is something completely different.
I'm here to build a car with my own two hands.

in the 3200 pound weight range
and from what I've read recently the target price has ballooned with the weight and is closer to $27K now
they are targetting the Hyundai Genesis coupe as the benchmark competion
sadly it started out as a modern version of the Trueno Sprinter

Where did you get that info? Reports are in the 2700 lb. range. 3200 is a WRX. Why on earth would this thing weigh that much. It's much smaller, no AWD, no turbo, etc.

Pricing for the rear-drive Scion is just as secret as the final shape of the prototype seen here, but Scion spokespeople have said the car will arrive for less than $30,000. The current front-drive tC starts at about $19K and the rear-drive Hyundai Genesis Coupe starts just over $23K. We’re expecting this Scion to slot in right around the Genesis, fueling a Korean/Japanese showdown. That is, of course, assuming Toyota is through toying with us.

and I find hard to believe Toyota is going to design this to weigh less than the Tc at 3K lbs

I agree with you. I just thought the concept looks really cool and thought it was interesting that they would use a similar idea of a smaller car with a pretty sweet design (similar to what people have been submitting as this design) with a subaru engine for approximately the same cost (or higher depending on the article).
I can't wait for factory five to come out with the hard top model.

I have a hard time seeing any similarities with the 8.1.8. other than it's a subaru flat 4 engine. In the scion the engine is in front. It will most likely be a fully trimmed fully glassed and sealed street car. It will most likely weight close to 3k pounds. It will most likely NOT use double wishbone suspension. It will most likely be NA and out the door price will probably exceed double the 8.1.8.
I'm not seeing the collation. But that's just me. ;-)
Do I like it? Sure, concept looks great. Now lets see toyota make it. I knew I liked the new Genesis coupe from day one, and this is a big part of the reason. Hyundai is finally making cars that is forcing the other big names to take notice, and the Genesis coupe was targeted at EXACTLY the market gap that I've been staring at for so many years.
Now we just need for GM to make the Sky and Solstice with a V8 and sell it for 35k. Even a factory turbo 4 might make me happy.
Nissan needs to setup it up with the Z cars and figure out if they're making a sports car or touring car, a decision they've been putting off for about 25 years. They need a second RWD sports car to fill the market gap that's now being more obvious. Nobody wants to buy a hopped up sentra as a "budget sports car". They need to just make a new 240SX and make it a real budget sports car.
Ford's lost their head with the new Mustang, which is further from the idea of a Pony car as ever. The Fox body mustangs had it right, and were perfectly in the market region that the original mustangs were. The mustang needs to drop about 1,000 pounds. Or they just need to make a smaller car with a new name that's RWD with a cheaper power plant with around 300hp.
Dodge is just dumb. I don't know where to begin but they haven't made a car I've been interested in since the 70's, unless you want to call the mitsu Colt a "dodge".
Honda... Really surprised me with the S2000 when it came out. They'd never really made an interesting RWD car other than the NSX, which is still a trasverse design. The only problem with the S2k is that it's just bloody expensive. Sure the build quality is great, it's a honda. But I'd never spend that much on a car that just doesn't have potential on where to take it. It's a car I'd recommend to someone who wants a sports car but they're not really a car person. Just buy it and leave it. That's what it does well. If honda wants to compete with cars like the Genesis coupe they need to have a RWD car that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I don't see how they're going to do that though.
That's my summary of what I'm looking for from all the big names. Wee little hyundai has shown everyone else up, and left them wondering where their balls are at. Now let's find out what they'll do in response.

Subaru is the lead on designing it, not Toyota. That is confirmed by Subaru.
It is currently *assumed* that the only major Toyota technology is thier direct injection system being adapted to Subaru's new line of engines.
If Mazda can produce a 2250 pound Mazda 2 that meets all current safety requirements, then I see no reason that Subaru cannot bring this in @ 2700ish pounds. The current stripper Imprezas come in about 3200 with AWD. That leaves alot of room on the table for trimming.
The Subaru forums are full of senseless, crap posts arguing about what this car is and isn't. Nobody seems willing to do the obvious.....Wait and see the final product before judging it. Let's not start that trend here please.

Mazda used a special lightweight steel alloy in some of the chassis components and whole slew of weight reducing measures from the previous gen Mazda2.
But at the same price a Fiesta is much better equipped, albeit much heavier car, there is a price for lightness that Ford did not wanna pay.
Me personally I'd buy the Mazda since I'll take fun driveability over doodads any day.
Subaru might pull this off, might, depends on how much input Toyota will have.

As much fun as the Focus can be to drive, I agree with you Niburu, the mazda would be my choice to. Ford's successful "fun" cars are slim pickings. Main reason for me is that Mazda's seem to always drive better, like comparing a BMW to a VW. Just not the same league.
