Coyote oil from Ford

Anyone know what oil Ford ships the crate Coyotes out with? I saved it but might need to add a quart. Any reason not to reuse it?

I assume (always dangerous, I know...) that Ford ships the Coyote with the 5W-20 synthetic or synthetic blend they list in the fluid requirement specs. You could call Ford Tech Support and confirm, but I think it's a pretty safe bet. Absolutely no reason IMO not to catch the oil it comes with into a clean container and re-use. Then add the additional couple quarts of the same oil that the low profile pan requires. I didn't plan ahead and put $50 worth of oil in my recycle containers.

I would reuse it. The oil may have a break-in additive in it. If not its still good clean oil so why not use it. See what FORD recommends for the Mustang GT to find a brand or viscosity index.

Now that I'm back at my real computer, this is the exact oil requirement from Ford for the Coyote: "Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil XO-5W20-QSP, specification WSS-M2C945-A. Also Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil XO-5W20-QFS, specification WSS-M2C945-A." Same as in an earlier post. 5W-20 full synthetic or synthetic blend. No way to know which Ford put in the engine from the factory, but you would be very safe IMO adding a couple of quarts of either. Could be Motorcraft if you're so inclined. But any name brand would be fine.

I doubt very much there's any break-in additive in the initial fill. Modern engines and tolerances don't need it. Ford lists the same service cycle for the first oil change as all the rest. 1 year or 10,000 miles maximum.

That is a variable & is why I said I don't know if the Crate motors use it.. Thing is almost all BMW's are on the 10K cycle but the "M" series cars have a factory required oil change at 1200 miles. No extra money for BMW in this as all changes to 50K miles are free.

FWIW I have been using Mobil 1 in the COYOTE on an annual change basis.

The Coyote crate motors aren't anything special. They're production line motors that go into manual shift Mustang GT's which is why I cited the Mustang oil change interval. The only difference is the special harness, PCM, etc. that Ford Performance makes available. It's all probably a somewhat moot point though. I also plan to change the oil on an annual basis. Like many, I won't get anywhere near the 10K miles.

My A50XS Coyote, did not have much oil in it. The filter was full and the pan had a small amount. I was impressed with the slickness of the oil and it was probably 5w-50, since that is what is on the filler cap.

I suspect 5W20 is for best fuel economy and that 5W50 is for performance applications.

I've never seen an oil recommendation for the base crate M-6007-M50A Coyote, let alone any instructions from Ford. Since it's a regular production engine, that's why I've recommended the same oil and interval as Ford provides for the Mustang GT. Where are you seeing a recommendation from Ford for this crate version?

The other Coyote crate variants, including the aluminator, A50XS, etc. are custom built with many different parts in a different factory. I do see at least one installation sheet from Ford that shows 5W-50 full synthetic for these.

Update: Dug into this a little further and see that Ford recommends 5W-50 on their Mustang GT's with the optional track pack. Same regular production Coyote but obviously they are anticipating it would be run harder. That would support the 5W-20 for economy and 5W-50 for performance idea. For mainly street driving with my base Gen 2 Coyote crate, I'm very comfortable sticking with the recommended 5W-20 oil. I don't have an oil temp gauge, but I've been watching the water temp very closely along with the cylinder head temp reading through the ODB2 port. I'm surprised how relatively cool this engine runs in my use.

The only thing I would be tempted to do would be to strain the oil through a paint strainer when you put it back in, just in case. I always keep a stack of them around. Scott
