Anyone use these type headers on a FFR Hot Rod?

Has anyone used these on a hot rod? Will the frame and steering allow the pipes to go through the side?

If you take a look at the "X-ray" view of the silver '33 on the FFR website, you can see that several tubes and maybe the steering would interfere. That doesn't mean that you couldn't spend either a lot of time building a custom set yourself or a lot of money to pay someone to do it.

I've always found this type of setup to be highly impractical. You could seldom uncap the headers and the rest of the time, the system is restrictive and a hazard to anyone around the car.

You could make your own, but with the suicide doors you'd have to watch where they stop so the doors will open, and the low ride height might make it tougher to route the pipe back under the car.

The ride height would be a killer. If the car only sits 4.25 inches off the ground, you can't put a 2.5" pipe below that. The frame on a real '33 will sit a lot higher and the engine is quite a bit further forward.

68449 Here's a set of headers I made for my car. You can see how high you have to go to miss the chassis. From here there is a turndown and then a high-flow fabricated muffler that terminates just before the door. The muffler is the same 3.5" diameter as the collector so it looks like an extension of the collector and dumps the hot gas along side of the car. Sorry I don't have a photo of the whole system handy but looking at the header will give you an idea of how much elevation you'll need to exit over the front end tubing.

It looks like there is more of a problem with the tubes of the frame not letting the exhaust go right out the side, then the clearance from the bottom of the car to the ground.


I already have a steep driveway that I may have problems with so I don't need it any lower.
