So I am new to body, and I am starting that since my engine is not here yet. I have a couple of guys who have said they would help if I needed anything. They have been doing body work and paint for years. Since I dont want to reinvent the wheel, I thought I would ask what you guys have used for some products.

I am using
evercoatr 125 rage ultra body filler
Dupon prep sol
I bought my blocks and paper (dura gold paper)

what are you guys using for cleaning the car between body coat layers and slick sand?

Without the assistance of those on the forum like Jeff Kleiner, Jeff Miller and EdwardB this newbie would have been totally lost.

I have documented what I have done so far starting around Post 615 of my build thread ... if you want to get a rookie's perspective:

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?9583-Carl-s-Mk-4-Roadster-Build/page16

Consumables ... So far:

Amazon ... but I found a local supplier (http://www.finishmaster.com/) which carries the stuff (they are national chain):

Evercoat Rage Gold
3M HSRF

From Eastwood:

Pre Painting Prep Aerosol 11oz Item #10041Z
Radius Body Filler Spreaders 5-pk Item #13919
7 Piece Sanding Block Kit Item #31160 Brand: Dura-Block
Soft Sanders 6-Pack Item #19311 Brand: Style-Line

Mirka Sandpaper (80 grit so far but I have 120,220, 320 and 400) from Autobody Tool Mart (http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/mirka-sandpaper-abrasives-c-819.aspx)

Scotch pads
Simple Green
Lots of water ... and beer

Hope this helps,

Carl

My bodywork thread - 3.1, so some of the body mods won't apply, but the technique and products are still the same.

Newbie to bodywork - had never done it before - and found it to be one of the most fun parts of my build.

So as a quick break down these are the steps?

Clean the car with wax and grease
Align all panels
Sand out the seams on the car
Use little 3m hsrf on those seams
Let sit for 2 weeks
Build w rage
Sand
Build w rage
Sand continue until complete
Spray slick sand primer
Block
Clean w pre paint
Paint
Clear
Sand going up to 2k grit
Polish buff
Drink beer??

Very high level

Others may do it differently but here's the Readers Digest version of my method:

Clean body and panels
Take down parting lines with 40 on a DA
Trim/roll wheelwells
Trim back/straighten front and rear cockpit cowl rolls
Block entire body out to 100-120
Finish parting lines and roll door tops w/ Rage Gold (HSRF is only needed at the parting lines for anomolies with Mk4s)
Cut scoop hole, fill between top and bottom w/HSRF, finish w/Rage
2+ gallons of Slick Sand
Install body on chassis with bulb seal, position with front QJ/bumper tubes
Install windshield and splash panels
Fit & adjust panels on their hinges, roughly fit gaps
Test fit sidepipes and adjust cutouts as necessary
"Bodywork" to match contours between body and moving panels (doors, hood, trunk)
Test fit lights, roll bars, etc. and adjust cutouts as necessary
Undo it all and pull the body
Take any untouched slicksand out to 400
Shoot 2 more gallons of Slicksand
Block out to 600
Paint
Clear
Cut to 3000
Buff
Reassemble

Sounds easy don't it? Don't kid yourself...it'll take you all weekend ;)

That's something I haven't heard before! Most seem to dread the bodywork (at least in the 33 threads I read most). Beautiful job and nicely detailed process thanks
