Hey Gang,

I wanted to share with all of you my findings today.

A couple of weeks ago my beloved daily driver (1995 C-4 Corvette) pushed out the spark plug from the #8 cylinder head, taking the threads with it. After 22 years I had to yank the head so that I could get the threads repaired. Much to my surprise, the engine was as clean as can be and I discovered that it had No Appreciable Ring Ridge.

I've always used Mobile-1 Synthetic and later their Extended Performance Oil when that became available so I was hopeful that the engine would be in pretty good shape other than the head issue. The surprise comes from the fact that I log roughly 250-350 Miles each week, the car is old as dirt, but the lifter valley was clean, the valve cover was clean as was the top of head under the cover. In addition, please know that I drive this car hard and assumed that the block would look a tad rough after 22 years of red line shifts, hitting the rev limiter on more than a few occaisions (6,000) and it has well over 200,000 miles on it.

The Point Of This Post Is To Urge You All To Use A High-Quality Oil In Your Daily Drivers & Your Factory Five Dream Cars So That You Can Continue To Drive Them For Many More Years!

Happy Motoring All!

Very nice! I always use synthetic in my dailies and change on time but like most I have no idea if it's working!

Like you, I currently use Mobil 1 Extended Performance (even my snowblower). My experience started back in the early 70's when Amsoil came out with their synthetic oil which I used in my 74 Bronco until it died (not the engine). I read about a test conducted by an Amsoil engineer whereby you heat a flat piece of metal with a torch until it's nice and hot and then pour a little petroleum based oil on one side of the hot spot and a little Amsoil on the other side of the hot spot. I duplicated that test in the maintenance shop at work and found that the synthetic ran toward the hot spot and the petroleum ran away. I have been using synthetics ever since.

I agree. Been using synthetics for a long time and I also change the oil at 3500-4000 miles. I am sure the oil doesn't wear out that soon but I figure there is the same amount of trash in it as there always has been. Longest mileage cars have been a 65 Camry w/ 170,000 and a 01 Mitsu Eclipse GT. Wife drove it to 130k, I ran to 180k, and my brother now has 210,000 on it w/ nothing done to the engine except plugs, belts, and a water pump.

I have seen engines run on dino oil with the same results. IMO as long as the engine comes up to temp properly, is changed regularly and does not run hot, a name brand, detergent oil will do the same. I had to pull the intake on my 93 F150, 302, using Castrol for the life of the truck, over 300K miles. It was clean and consumed no oil when I sold it. I do use syn in all my newer vehicles and do believe it offers a higher level of protection outside of normal conditions. While I am on the box, I will also say, I change all my vehicles at 5000 mile intervals. I used the oil life indicator on my '13 F150, but was not comfortable with being at 7000 miles and still showing oil life.

I know a high quality oil can't hurt, but generally I feel it is more about how "car people" take care of their cars that makes the biggest difference. I just had my 10-year-old F250 in the shop for a new set of injectors. When I picked it up the service rep asked if I'd be interested in selling it. He said that he hadn't seen a 2007 in as good condition as mine in a very long time. I do all the regular maintenance on the truck on time, drive it fairly hard, and the extra TLC shines through. My daughter on the other hand, in spite of my constant harping, has a four-year-old car that is falling apart.

Hey Gang,

Today my old traveling pal (1995 Corvette Rag Top) came back to life.
While I always enjoy riding my bike, using it for a 70 mile per day commuter is less than desirable.
With much delay, I can finally get back to working on my MK-4 since my daily driver is back on the road.
Have A Happy Easter & Passover Everyone!
Also, remember to change your oil.

Steve
