So it officially begins, last Sunday March 5 was D-Day, we had some friends over to help and we had it unloaded pretty quickly. Monday was inventory day which went pretty well, the delay in manufacturing help shrink the back order list but we have some pieces that are delayed. The engine and transmission will hopefully ship shorty from Ford, 5.0 Coyote with T-56, Control Pack and assorted pieces. The rear end assembly I pickup off of eBay from a 2015 "track pack" Mustang GT with 3.73 gears, a Torsen diff, and brakes under under $1200 delivered. Color is going to be bright blue same or similar to what was on my 2012 Ford Focus - Blue Candy Metallic with black stripes. I have been waiting for this arrive to plan out what we need and what we want to upgrade. Mystique will join the Roadster aka Pod Racer, 2016 Mustang GT aka Vader and 2012 Scion IQ aka Roller Skate. The stuff just got real!!http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/20170305_110120_resized_zpshe7heeyn.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/20170305_110120_resized_zpshe7heeyn.jpg.html) http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/20170305_110257_zps5l5p5fcg.jpeg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/20170305_110257_zps5l5p5fcg.jpeg.html) http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/20170305_111018_resized_zpseeph0vvj.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/20170305_111018_resized_zpseeph0vvj.jpg.html) http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/CoupeBuild/IMG_20170305_142833586_HDR_zpsdzzicpnk.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/CoupeBuild/IMG_20170305_142833586_HDR_zpsdzzicpnk.jpg.html)

Congrats Paul. A note on the track pack- be careful to research which wheels will fit. I know on my wife's Mustang there is no way to go less than the original 19s on the front because of the huge Brembos. I haven't looked at the rear specifically so not sure there. I am using my 17 in Bullitts on my retrofit 15 IRS but it was from a V8 auto trans car w/o track pack or Performance Package.

Paul,
FYI . ford called me today they are shipping 4 coyote power modules(w/ T56) tomorrow AM. If you were number 4 or less you are in luck! Otherwise, there is a problem with the QT bellhousings. Luckily I was number 3

I spent more time on the computer this weekend than the garage, but we got some of it done. Engine, trans and control will be here tomorrow or the next day, I got most of the fuel parts order some are here. Going with a 3/8 line both ways, Some of the brake parts are here, and FFR has 3 boxes on the way due here Friday. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/DSC03014_zpsezfw0dua.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/DSC03014_zpsezfw0dua.jpg.html) http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/DSC03018_zps4av21kya.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/DSC03018_zps4av21kya.jpg.html)

Yesterday day started off nicely with the delivery of Ford Racing M-9000-PMCM, 5.0 Coyote, T-56 trans, clutch and control pack at 8:30am, later in the day FedEx showed up with more FFR parts. Today I got busy taking a part the Mustang IRS I picked up, tomorrow I hope to finish cleaning up parts, paint the rearend and maybe the rear brakes.

Well since the last update, we have torn apart the rear suspension from the Mustang, clean up the diff and painted it. There was some minor damage to one of the uprights and one of the bearing was a little iffy at best, so I error on the side of caution, 2 new bearing and hubs are coming and one upright. A little delay however I'm waiting on other pieces any way, rather do it right than redo it once it is in. We got the diff installed, not a real easy task since it is about 93 lbs and it is not a straight up shot. All the the IRS arms are installed and torqued and the gas tank is installed. Coming up this week, clean and paint the rear brakes, plumbing for the fuel line, maybe install the pedal box and start the brake lines. If the hubs\bearings come in then we can finish up the rear end.

Not much to report this week, I ordered some parts and waiting for others, but the weather here has been perfect that last couple days quality time driving the Roadster this weekend, I should have much of the IRS done this week, some parts land tomorrow. More pics next weekend.

This last week there was not a lot of activity going on directly, I purchased my wheels and tire a few weeks ago and ran onto a issue with the rear brakes. I had the 13in that came with the rear end assembly I purchase however they are a bit too big for the wheels. So I did a little research and look at my roadster rear brakes and figure I could do something and make something work. I got rear brakes from a 1998 Mustang Cobra, they are 11.65in rotor, while they came close to be a direct bolt in the pad was about 1/16 in too high plus I would need to run a wheel spacer under the rotor so I decided to design a bracket to get these to work. I should have the bracket on Wednesday and the rest of the front brakes by Friday and hope to have a roller by Sunday. We shall see.. We got the rest of the front end torque and the rest of the body off.

Busy few days when I wasn't working, I got my brake mount brackets made, painted and installed. The car or cart is sitting on its wheels now, we moved it to our short bay so I could prep the Roadster for Huntington Beach and Route 66 Fun Run.
I will be doing some work around getting battery box made and installed and hand brake finish maybe a few other things. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/DSC03059_zps6dmiub08.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/DSC03059_zps6dmiub08.jpg.html)http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/DSC03054_zpsfjvyyxat.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/DSC03054_zpsfjvyyxat.jpg.html)http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah105/cobradriver2/DSC03044_zpsa7luxgco.jpg (http://s1378.photobucket.com/user/cobradriver2/media/DSC03044_zpsa7luxgco.jpg.html)

your build is looking really good, just ordered mine looks like it will be in my garage in the beginning of june. been doing a lot of research and getting parts ordered, I'm gunna be be running the same engine and trans and irs setup. stilling trying to figure everything out. trying to figure out what bellhousing, clutch and throwout bearing to use, which ones did you decide to use? cant wait to get started, hopefully get more good ideas for the huntington show.

Paul G

I bought a package from Don Woods Ford - Ford Racing parts, it came with Coyote, control pack, T-56, Quicktime Bellhousing, Centerforce Clutch with throwout bearing, also starter, and alt and the upper hose for under 13K, all new parts. There is a bit of a wait, order the package Dec 15 and it arrived around March 15, it has been typically a 2-3 month wait. I've look thru my parts but I have started putting the engine stuff together yet, not enough spare room. Take a bunch of pics at Huntington beach as the completed Gen 3 manual is not available yet, mine shipped with a Gen 2 manual which does help quite a bit in the meantime. If are looking to run the stock 13" rear brakes you will need 18" wheels, hide sight being perfect I would have went with the 18" and save time and $$ using the brakes off the used assembly I purchased. My wife and I are headed to Huntington Beach for the show this weekend as well.

Thanks for the info, I already have engine and trans just sitting and waiting. I was most likely gunna go with the QuickTime bell housing just couldn't run the exact clutch I wanted. I will take as many pictures as I can, not the fist car I've built from the ground up but my first kit car. Yea I'm gunna be running 18in wheels, probably gunna stick with the stock rear brakes for now and upgrade them eventually. I haven't had any luck finding a complete 373 torsen rear end yet, only can find the 331 complete rear end. Can't wait to see your build come along and finally get to start mine.

Paul G
04-24-2017, 11:20 PM
I'm sure there will be more 3.73 available after the next cars and coffee. You will want to avoid the all aluminum rear end housing(rust is a good thing here, just paint it when you get it) as they are for the V-6 Mustangs and will break the housing with a V-8.

David Williamson
04-25-2017, 08:12 AM
A question on the front end, what holes did you use for the lower "A" arms and the steering rack? I don't have the parts yet and maybe it will be obvious when I get them
I am drilling holes and fitting aluminum while I wait for the Canadian completion parts from Whitby and the drive train from Levy

Lower holes on all, the lower holes are for the street, upper holes for the race chassis. That why they have one part number and it correct for both chassis's. Prevents welding on street bracket on a race chassis and vise versa, it is right all the time.

It has been a slow couple of weeks on the build, with Huntington Beach one week and Route 66 Fun Run the next we have not got much done. Front brakes are painted and installed. We have a road rally this summer so this week and part of next will be focus on the Mustang "Vader" getting it ready to go.

We have been traveling a bit, celebrating Mary's B-day and then there is this... This year we are participating in Rally North America’s CJ Pony Parts Rally Appalachia 2. We are raising money to Hope for the Warriors - Hope For The Warriors provides comprehensive support programs for service members, veterans, and military families that are focused on transition, health and wellness, peer engagement, and connections to community resources. Mary has sold over $1000 in preserves aka Jam for Heroes. I previous years we have taken the Roadster, this year we opted for comfort, 2016 Mustang GT. We hope next year we will be able to take both the Coupe and the Roadster.

If you would like to donate follow the link, 100% of the money goes to the charity, and by supporting Team Vader we get to move closer to the starting line. If you donate $20 or more you will get a Stormtrooper helmet on the car.

Update- Not huge after all it was 120 outside in the shade this week. Since the last update, parking brake is in, started work on the pedal box and brake lines, I may get more done this week it gets below 115. Opted to go with the hydraulic clutch as well.

Just a little update- The coupe has been on a bit of the back burner due to heat and to rally we were on for most of chunk of July. The heat has been a bit extra nasty this summer and now the humidity is up with the monsoon storm season in full swing, and bending brake lines in nasty heat doesn't go real well as turn a straight 5ft brake line into industrial art yesterday. The rally we went on was a great time, our team managed to raise over $2100 putting us at #15 in the starting grid of 72. The group as a whole raise over over $150,000 for Hope for the Warriors. We had a stop at Martinsville Raceway for quick tour and photo op and a little fun on part of the track, a couple hours of open track on the south track at VIR and 8 "parade" laps at Talladega Superspeedway, when I say parade laps that means 85-95 mph on the turns and about 100-110 mph in the straights. The weirdest part is at 85-95 mph on the banked turns I found myself correcting right to keep the line thru turns. Anyway still working on the brake lines as the heat will allow, also working mental planning ahead for the build. It is good to see some new bits and pieces that have been release from some of the vendors and the beta manual. Over the next few weeks I hope to have some progress with pics. I'm trying to have this ready for next years rally and with a little luck we will take both the roadster and coupe. Hope come out to Huntington Beach with both cars.

the heat has been bad this summer, although I'm in the inland empire so I don't have it as bad as you. your build is coming along nicely, I just finished all the brake and lines this weekend. had to go get more brakeline cause I wasn't happy with a couple bends and like you said not fun in the heat. cant wait for next years huntington show.

A little update... A mentioned before I turn a 5ft piece of brake into art due to trying too hard on a real hot day. Well I came back at start Thursday night after a nice monsoon storm and had much better success. All the large lines bent and in place I'll work on fully securing them this week as well as finishing the 2 remaining hard lines and the flex lines or at least I hope too. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out so far. Here are some pictures of the progress.

I got something done this despite getting in my own way. This week all of the brake high pressure side is done, secured and tight, I have the reservoir mounting, lines and bleeding the brakes, that will be another week TBD. I actually squeezed down the transmission tunnel to install a couple clamps, smacked my head on head of the trans cross-member mounting locations, not recommended, I bled a little but pushed on and completed the task. Things dried out for a couple days here, so I thought I would try on use my evap cooler. That didn't goes as planned, pump was dead, hose was too short for the new pump and then the drain broke, finally after 4 trips the the hardware store, my pads were all but done. I ordered new pads got them Friday, installed them as the last thing I did, it rained Saturday.... it did dry out I finally got to use the cooler I was able to work 2 more hours on Saturday to finish the brake lines. Next task, fuel lines, made mounting bracket for my fuel filter mount today. Hopefully the weather will be better this week.

I will have pictures posted soon for September, the temps are coming down so I should be getting more work done. In September I got a few little item but not little work to complete things done, The list, battery mount lot more time to get it done than expected, Gas pedal, brake switch, clutch switches, brake and clutch reservoirs, fuel pressure regulator with lines. I have started drilling my panels so they can be powder coated. Side pipes are getting ceramic coating this week.

an observation ... if you haven't put your motor in yet... that regulator is going to be an issue to get to header bolts and valve cover if you ever need to take it off....

Erik, I have thought about that a bit, the regulator is screwed and removes pretty easy, one thing I have thought of, flipping the the bracket which will raise it a couple inches, I have plenty of steel braided line left if I need to move it. I may do a remote mount for the gauge. I just pulled the panels on that footbox today to most likely have them powder coated, still marking and drilling the other panels. Thanks for your comments, please continue to comment, especially if you see something that is going to hurt later. It to easy to get tunnel vision especially with it being a huge change from the the Gen 2 and with only a few people that have completed their cars.

Time for some more pics. October we had a nice trip to northeast Arizona, the down was 4 less days to work, also I was on-call for two weeks and we had a very bad weekend during that rotation. The good news was an email announcing the A\C kit for the Gen 3 with a Coyote engine, I was on the phone in 10 minutes making arrangements and payment. I got the last 2 aluminum panels which is was the last of my backorder parts not including the A\C which should be here in the next 2-3 weeks. October's focus was Ceramic coating the side pipes, and getting a lot of the panels ready and other to the powdercoaters, and starting the electrical. The panels took more time than I thought, in the end the finished product should be better.
The pipes back after ceramic coating

The electrical... 2 wire harness and 3 sets of instructions and no problem, I have a RF chassis harness, Coyote control pack for instructions regular FFR Coyote fitment instruction manual, the RF manual and the Ford Control pack manual what can go wrong, but wait I have A\C coming too. I feel more comfortable dealing with wiring than some folks, I understand how it works and I have a lot of practice of the years with the Roadster. After reading everything and laying everything out on our pool table and additional 8ft table, I think I have a plan at least in pencil. Since I have time I decide to remove a couple duplicate circuit along with the plug used only in the Hotrod as well as getting the harness lay better for the Coupe.

For November I hope to receive the A\C package as this does factor in the wiring. I will get back my first set of panel and may actually get some permanently installed. Finish up the RF harness and get ready to install. We will be out of town for part of the month helping my son get ready and sending him off to boot camp. but I should have at least one long weekend.

I will be very interested to learn more about the A/C solution FF has come up with and where it fits in the cockpit. Specifically for the Coyote? Do they address having an A/C pump and a PS pump on the Coyote? Was looking through Vintage Air stuff just yesterday. Have plenty of time to figure this out. My Coupe is supposed to be done on the 18th, but probably won't see it until the end of this month.

The FFR racing packaging for AC and heat fits in the pass footbox and on top of it... I couldn't do that due to my intercoolers... so I did the vintage air space saver and put the unit in the back of the car.... Also in the BETA PS unit from FFR it did not fit with the shorty headers that I was using for the Turbos - but the FFR would have worked just fine if I use their headers. I honestly forgot to look at how the Blue Coupe at SEMA had both PS and AC front dress mounted.... for schedule reasons I could not wait so I went off the reservation completely - come to think of it... lol... I was never on the reservation with this build....but that's where the fun happen!

As EdwardB mentions, documenting your A/C install is of great interest to many of us! I downloaded the manual for it and sort of kicked myself for ordering it :-) Looks like a huge PIA.

Also, seems that quite a few folks are going with the hydraulic clutch. I've always understood the adjustment on those is difficult, and not understood the advantage over manual and easily adjustable clutch. I understand the feels is nicer, but really worth it then?

thanks!

I have been working on it, I should have more photos posted soon. Tomorrow is the start of Barrett Jackson Scottsdale, I will be spending a good bit of time out there our the next week. the storage piece is done, a larger metal brake would have been great help, I have a small 18" brake, 24" or more would have been better I would been able to do the sides in 3 pieces instead of 5 pieces. I'm working on wiring and custom piece for the interior hopefully it will turn out close to my mental vision.

Yes I made that panel. I had purchased a 3ft x 2ft piece of .040 6061( same stuff the rest of the panels are make of. I made a template out of poster board, and used a hand held jig saw. Tip: Put Duct tape on the bottom of the saw where it contacts the metal, this will reduce the jigsaw from hammering and scratching the material, it will a bunch of time sanding the panel when you are done. I learned the hard way the first time.

Well it has been a while since my last update. I was out all week at Barrett Jackson helping Factory Five with the build of the the Coyote Powered Roadster, had a great time we got the car done and auctioned it off on Sunday afternoon, it hammered for 60k. I also have been working on the Roadster over the last week, sprung a coolant leak due to a bad radiator cap, it would not release pressure, also addressing a couple minor things too. I finished adding extra storage in the back, made some progress with the wiring and in the process of adding a switches and A/C controls, well at least the control plate. Here are some pics.

Erik, I read that carefully 3 times, Out from the Engine to In on the filter, Out on the filter to In on the Engine. I think a few folks go Out to Out and In to IN and have what you describe 15 sec of Yes then a lot of OHHH NNNOO!! Thanks you keeping me focused. After test fitting the engine I followed your advise and I'm moving the fuel pressure regulator to the other side of the reservoirs, I have a couple more -AN fittings coming on Tuesday to finish that up. I should working on the A/C maybe next weekend, however it may get delayed as I need to do a brake job and polish and wax detail on the Roadster to get ready for Huntington Beach. Today I relocated the fuel pressure regulator and fitting the engine bay passenger footbox then I took off all of the black panels above to wipe them down and prep some for final installation. Tomorrow I hope to get the some more panels final install done, reinstall the brake & clutch reservoirs, finish the lines to the master cylinders and bleed the brakes.

As for the remote oil filter, I choose it for a ease of changing and a little more oil capacity and a bigger filter. I believe Erik was driven by exhaust routing for his turbos, but he could tell you for sure. If you go that way read the instructions very carefully or it good very bad as he mentioned earlier in this thread.

I haven't updated in a while, I'll try and post pics in the next week or so. I have the 2 trunk panels in, battery cables are run, just need to add the tips on the end at the battery. As usual 2 steps forward 1 step back, I need to add 2 more wire to the rear harness that is mostly installed already for the reverse lockout solenoid. I had to take off a few weeks, prep for HB, HB weekend, next weekend to visit my son in the Army, a weekend to prep our Mustang for a upcoming rally and rally fundraiser. The coupe was pushed aside but is back in the center of the garage, with summer starting it limits what I can do in the afternoon, west facing garage just a bit warm around 1pm every day.

Paul G,
I'm located in Scottsdale, AZ, across town from you and just last weekend placed my order for a Gen 3 Type 65 Coupe. The factory completion date is August 11, so that means I should receive my kit via Stewart around Sept 1 give or take.
I've been browsing and examining the information and various builds in the FFR Forum for well over a year, noticed yours a year ago and then moved from the SF Bay Area to Scottsdale in March.
I sure would like to stop by some time (probably a few times down the road) and check out your cars and the Gen 3 build, ideally before I receive my kit, etc.

Bob,
Congrats on your purchase. Drop me an email at paul.gillespie@live.com and we can setup a time for you to stop by and check out the progress, and answer questions. The build has gone a little slower than first expected however do to difficulty more about project creep like "lets powder coat the panels" and well life and summer etc. I hope to drop in the engine and trans for the final time in August. I'll being post many photos in a few minutes.

Well my last big update was back in March, I have a few things delay me, Huntington Beach, visiting my son in the Army. I have been busy working on the car too, I'll be working on the dash next. What have I got done, the brakes I have working brake pedal, wiring lots of wiring. The connectors I touch get crimped, soldered, and heat shrink tubing. Here are some pics.
Battery cables, while I decided to put my battery in the back I ran my ground cable (0 gauge welding cable) to engine bay, on the other side on that frame will be a ground strap connected to a start bolt, also a 8 gauge wire will go up behind the dash to tie in the grounds up there.

HI Paul.

Another Coyote in the house. And with A T56 to back it up. Nice touch. Has that been done before in a coupe? Good job and a I like the no nonsense build thread.

Looking good! I'm also running a T56 Mag and a Coyote! Great build so far! Love seeing all the progress! Hopefully I will be able to add some updates this weekend. Fingers crossed I'll have the engine in for the first (and hopefully last) time! Great build so far! Subscribed!

The Gen3 Coupe when ordered with the that combo it is a bolt in solution. It still takes some planning, I drop in the engine only earlier this year to see where I can mount certain things, I have run my brake and fuel lines and most of my electrical. For instance the Relay /Fuse box for the Coyote is sitting on top of the footbox in some of my pics, that was so I could get the engine and trans in, the box is in it's permanent place bolted to the side of the foot box.

Just a quick update, We are in early go-cart stage, went up the street about 3 or 4 houses and turned and backed it in the garage. We was out at Barrett Jackson everyday and we had a little Pre Auction party, I do have some pics I hope to post soon.

I've been working on a number of other projects and taking a little breather. I started to get back into the swing of things since the weather has been a bit cooler than normal. A couple weeks ago I was going to move it out of the garage and had no brake pedal, so I push it in and out. I got it up in the air and found I had a leaky brake caliper. Fix that re-bled the brake and I have good pedal now. I also know I was going to need a clutch pedal stop so the slave cylinder would not get pushed too far. Made one out of a Al barstock and appliance foot to make it adjustable. Also installed 1" wheel spacers in the rear that I purchased on Black Friday. We most of the little things done it was time for a drive around the block.

Next on the list, passenger seat, finish off the upper hose, need a little rubber pad to keep it from rattling. AC plumbing, tools for that will be here on Monday. Body fitment and the start of body work. Here are some current pics
Clutch pedal stop- Once I installed it and tested it, I was surprised how short the travel is, car starts clutch works as expected
