After 7 years and 35,000 miles I got hit by a rock on the freeway and cracked the windshield. Looking into replacements and am wondering about well the lexan replacements are working out. Any drawbacks? Do they scratch? How well do they hold up to impact, are they safe?

Thanks,

Robert.

Hi Robert, going by past posts I remember several times reading that the lexan windshields are not DOT approved.

I have a Fast Freddie's Lexan windshield and really like it. I don't worry about someone grabbing the windshield and cracking it anymore.
(does look weird when you wear Polarized sunglasses sometimes)

Before he retired, I autocrossed w/ Fred 15-20 times per summer. He told me how he tested the Lexan as he was developing his product. He got a piece big enough to to tape across the windshield of his tow truck. Two hours of running the wipers and throwing gravel, landscape sand, dirt, sand blasting sand, and occasionally enough water to make a slush of the above and no scratches. he did need new wipers though.

About a year after my build was complete, I went out to the garage one Sunday morning to find out that my windshield had cracked overnight (still a mystery). FFR was back ordered on replacements and I has a track day scheduled for the following weekend, so I bought one of Fast Freddie's Lexan units and never looked back. The fit was perfect with no down side for two years now. My wife thinks the clarity is better then glass, but I don't notice the difference. I am not aware of a DOT compliance issue.
