I see where most builders mount the Le Mans gas cap where the latch is on the right outside of the car, and it opens up from the right side and towards the center of the car. Is there a reason for that orientation? I was thinking that it makes sense to have the latch on the rearward side, and have the cap open up towards the front. What say you all? Post your pictures. As always, thanks for all the ideas.

Nearly every one I've seen, including my own, have the latch on the outside and the cap swinging toward the center. Or clocked around slightly so the door swings basically toward the driver's seat. Either of these locations give good access for fueling. I don't know of any particular advantage of mounting it as you describe. If that's what you want, go for it. Just make sure the cap doesn't swing into the body.

Thanks Paul. I have oriented/clocked it all the way around, it doesn't contact the body in any position (open or closed.) With so many builders mounting the latch on the outside, or 3 o'clock position, I figured there must be a good reason. Just don't know what that reason is. So far, I'm thinking it looks better, and is just as usable/accessible, with the latch at the rear (6 o'clock) position and opening forward.

I think it's easier to put the gas nozzle in with the cap flipping in rather than out. I'm sure you can do it if it flip out, but not as easy.
For the record, my latch is at 4:00.

Mine is close to 3:30 :). Gets the cap out of the way so the nozzle is clear regardless of where you are positioned at the pump. If you go latch at 6 you need to be sure the opening is always past the hose connection to the pump.

I would say it depends on if you're right or left handed. I'm right handed an I've always mounted mine the same as Mark's.
