I ran the cable beneath the cross member per the instructions but don't like it...I tried above but the cable is too long. Does this mean I'll either need to shorten the FF cable or use an aftermarket type? If I shorten, how does one do that?

There are thousands of kits out there running the cables the way FFR says. Not really an issue. You can shorten them but you will most likely need to find a place that can add a new ferrule on the end.

Agreed there are a bunch of builds out there with the cables below the frame. I've heard that the tech inspections required by some states won't pass it routed that way. I can't personally confirm that, but regardless I don't like it either. No good reason I guess. Just don't. With the former Mustang e-brake handle, it was possible to route them above the cross member with the right combination of parts. But with the angle of the newer FF designed handle, not as easy. I did come up with a way to do it on my current build. I used a Lokar connector and yes it's necessary to shorten the cables. It's tight, but this mod does coexist with the new IRS plus the larger TKO transmission. It seems to work very well. I think they call it a slippery slope.
I decided I wanted my cable to pass over the cross member as well. There are probably better ways but this worked for me and also for my friends roadster.
First thing I did was replace the complete kit park brake handle for the mustang park brake handle. I also added a pulley to correct for the angles. The cables were cut to length and I had a boat sail and rigging supply company swedge the threaded stud ends on for me. This allows for proper left right tension adjustment.

Unless your state is one of the ones Edwardb mentioned I don't think it is worth the trouble. The system works just fine running the cables under the frame tube.
