I am planning on installing a battery cut off switch for safety on track days and autocross events. I will be using a 140 amp single wire alternator. I was told by what I would consider to be a fairly reliable source that I do not need to to use a 4 post cut off switch which connects the alternator into the switch.
Does this sound correct? it has something to do with the 1 wire alternator not creating any current at low rpm. Thanks for any feedback.

Depends on the 1-wire alternator. I put a Tuff Stuff alternator on one of my builds. They advertised it as having the ability to excite at low RPM and start developing current immediately. I can confirm in actual use that's exactly what it does. Voltage gauge swings to 14 volts immediately at start-up and stays there even when idling. Have to think other brands may have a similar feature. Plus I think if you have any sanctioning bodies they're going to require the 4 post alternator cutoff as a standard safety item regardless of alternator type.
