View Full Version : PS Footbox Too Big?

Unfortunately I did not have my motor until long after the enlarged PS footbox was installed. Now that I have the 351w/427 stroker motor it looks like there may be interference between the header and the foobox at the corner shown in the photo. Just looking for guidance before I go to the trouble of setting the motor and headers in place to confirm.

Thanks,
Doug

Gordon should be able to clarify this for you, but the 351W has a taller deck then the 302, thus overall width is more and be sure the headers you intend to use are available because they can vary as well.

Hi Doug,

By no means am I an expert on the subject. But, if your last resort was to bang/dent the header in, you don't have to worry about losing horsepower. I found this quite interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azPKIjxmmdU

It may make a difference if you are using shorties or 4 into 4's. I'd guess that with shorties and j-pipes you'd be OK to go. 4 int 4's? That might depend on their design.

EDIT: This footbox is about the same size as yours, sporting a 302 with shorties and (Catalytic) j-pipes. Plenty of room.

No way to find out for sure except to try.

For reference, here are some pictures of the clearance for my 302. My foot box is similar size. As you can see, if you have a problem it will be at the upper inside corner.

Here's a picture of my #7750 Mk4 with the larger footbox mod. Similar to phileas_fogg's. This is a 302 sized block and it clears the FFR supplied BBK headers by about 1/2-inch. As I recall (it's been a couple years) the designer of that footbox mod made it to fill the leftover space when using a 302 sized SBF. With the taller deck height of your 351 and the resultant wider locations for the headers, I suspect you're going to have some interference. Note to self: #7750 needs a little clean-up work.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and pictures of the installs. I will print out the pictures and compare with my setup. Not sure how much work it will be to pull the footbox apart since they have been riveted with silicone. I will also check with Gordon since he provided the engine and headers.

You may just want to get and test fit the headers and possibly notch the foot box if it makes contact with that rear header tube.
From my perspective, making a small panel to fill a hole is likely a lot easier than re-working the entire foot box. (It Might Look Cool Too!)
You can get an easily formable piece of aluminum at any ACE Hardware or Home Improvement store.
Look at the door sill kick panels, which is what I used to cover my slave cylinder on the GoDadGo MK-4.
Good Luck & Don't Tear It Apart Until You Know You Have No Other Choice!

Thanks GoDadGo. I will test fit the engine/headers to be sure I need to mod the box. I will also check out your slave cylinder cover. I have seen the following done on the King build and may be able to implement on the installed box. Doug

Unfortunately not the best pictures under my garage lights, if you need better I'll try again. Stock Mk3 PS footbox, 351W with 4-into-4 headers.

Clearance inboard perpendicular to the side to the rearmost exhaust outlet is 2", from the front inside corner straight forward is 6.25".

You think that you have issues..............I have a 427W stroker as well and have had to increase the right-hand foot box to accommodate the pedal box for right-hand drive. We sectioned the headers on that side by cutting an inch off them and now have a 1 inch thick spacer at the end of the header and I have also had to fashion a blister for the header where it intrudes into the foot box next to the clutch pedal - enough clearance with some heat protection...just!

I hope your feet are smaller than mine. US 14.

Did you leave the engine in the stock, offset to the right, location?

Yes I have, there is actually quite a lot of room in the foot box, just the header is close to the clutch pedal arm. I toyed with offsetting the pedal box further outboard but in the end sectioned the headers instead.
